There is no way around it: Palo Alto hotels are expensive. The city has a limited number of rooms and steady demand from Stanford, its hospital and the tech industry. Weekday rates can surprise first-time visitors. The good news is that a few simple choices can bring the cost down a lot. Where you stay along El Camino Real, which nights you book and whether you are willing to ride Caltrain for ten minutes all make a real difference.
This guide covers the practical ways to save. We only name properties we confirmed are operating in 2026 and we never list prices, since they change by the day. To see what is cheapest for your dates, search budget hotels near Palo Alto and sort by price.
Look along south El Camino Real
El Camino Real runs the full length of Palo Alto. The north end near Stanford holds the big full-service hotels. As you head south past California Avenue toward Mountain View, the hotels get smaller and simpler and rates tend to drop. Most of the city's motels and limited-service hotels sit on this stretch.
Confirmed examples include:
- Comfort Inn Palo Alto at 3945 El Camino Real. Choice Hotels lists a free hot breakfast and paid outdoor parking. It is about 2 miles from Stanford.
- Creekside Inn at 3400 El Camino Real. A boutique-style hotel rather than a motel, so it is not always cheap, but it sometimes undercuts the hotels closer to campus. It lists Stanford about 2 miles away.
Other motels line this stretch too. Quality varies a lot from one property to the next. Read the most recent descriptions and photos on a booking site, check what is included and look at the cancellation terms before you pay. Rooms facing El Camino Real can be noisy, so ask for one at the back if you sleep lightly.
The south end of El Camino Real is close to the California Avenue Caltrain station and the San Antonio station in Mountain View. Buses also run along El Camino Real. Our California Avenue guide and South Palo Alto guide describe what is nearby.

Saving downtown
Downtown is the priciest area, but two small hotels give you options. The Cardinal Hotel at 235 Hamilton Avenue, open since 1924, offers shared-bath rooms alongside rooms with private baths. A shared bath is not for everyone, but it is one of the few ways to sleep a few minutes from University Avenue for less. Hotel Keen at 425 High Street advertises complimentary breakfast and offers for longer stays. Free breakfast adds up over several days. Our downtown guide covers both hotels.
Stay in a nearby town
The Caltrain line makes the whole Peninsula one market. Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Redwood City each have far more hotel rooms than Palo Alto. They usually have more choice at the lower end too.
| Town | Direction | Why look there |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain View | South, next door | Many hotels along El Camino Real and near tech campuses, plus Castro Street restaurants |
| Sunnyvale | South, a few stops | Lots of business hotels that can be cheaper on weekends |
| Redwood City | North, a few stops | Walkable downtown and a busy Caltrain station |
| Menlo Park | North, next door | Close to campus, though rates are often similar to Palo Alto |
One example: the Residence Inn Palo Alto Mountain View is at 1854 El Camino Real West in Mountain View. Marriott lists suites with full kitchens and a free hot breakfast. That combination can make a mid-priced hotel cheaper overall than a basic room where you eat out three times a day.
A few smaller hotels nearby are worth a look on price:
- Signature Inn Mountain View at 1665 W. El Camino Real, a 31-room Sonesta budget hotel that opened in April 2026, with mini-fridges in the rooms.
- Best Western Inn Redwood City at 316 El Camino Real, which lists a free hot breakfast, free parking and an outdoor pool near downtown Redwood City.
- Kasa Niche Hotel Redwood City at 868 Main Street, with compact rooms, self check-in and no front desk. The Redwood City Caltrain station is about 0.3 mile away, so you can skip the car.
Before you book out of town, add up the real cost. Count train fares or parking for each day you plan to come into Palo Alto. Check how far the hotel is from a Caltrain station. Ten minutes on the train is easy. A 25-minute walk to the station each way is not. You can compare Peninsula hotels on Agoda to see the spread in one search.
Timing is the biggest lever
Palo Alto's hotel prices follow Stanford and the tech calendar more than the weather. Moving your trip by a week can save more than any other choice.
- Avoid commencement. Stanford's 2027 commencement weekend runs June 10 to 13. Rates spike across the Peninsula.
- Avoid move-in. New students arrive in mid-September. Family visitors fill rooms that week.
- Watch football and big campus weekends. Home game Saturdays and alumni weekends in the fall push up weekend rates near campus.
- Flip your week. Business hotels are often cheapest on Friday and Saturday nights. A Thursday to Sunday trip can cost less than Monday to Thursday.
- Try late December. Campus empties and business travel slows in the last two weeks of the year.
- Check for conferences. Big tech events in San Francisco and San Jose can fill rooms all the way down the Peninsula.

What about hostels?
We could not confirm any hostel operating in Palo Alto in 2026. Hostels are far easier to find in San Francisco, roughly an hour away by Caltrain. That can work for a day trip to Stanford, but it is a long commute for several days of meetings.
For a shared or very basic stay closer in, the main options are a shared-bath hotel room, a room in a private home on a rental platform or a basic motel on El Camino Real. If you are a student or researcher with a Stanford connection, the Stanford Guest House on Sand Hill Road may be an option. It only accepts guests with a Stanford, SLAC or Stanford Medicine educational purpose.
Longer stays cost less per night
If you are in town for a week or more, ask for a weekly or monthly rate. Many extended-stay hotels and some small hotels discount longer bookings. A kitchen helps a lot. Even two home-cooked meals a day can save more than the difference between hotels.
For a month or longer, a furnished rental often beats any hotel on price per night. Our long stays guide explains furnished rentals, extended-stay hotels and corporate housing.
Watch the extra costs
- Parking. Many Palo Alto hotels charge a daily parking fee. Downtown valet adds up fast. A hotel with free parking can be cheaper overall.
- Taxes and fees. Hotel bills include a city transient occupancy tax on top of the room rate. Compare final totals, not nightly rates.
- Breakfast. Free breakfast is worth more than it looks in a pricey restaurant town.
- Cancellation. The cheapest rate is often nonrefundable. Only book it if your plans are firm.
