Thanksgiving is a quiet holiday in Palo Alto. Stanford students scatter, the public schools close for the whole week and business travel stops. By Thursday afternoon downtown is nearly empty. For anyone who stays, or anyone visiting family, that calm is the appeal. Roads are clear, hotels have space and the town feels like a small college town again for a few days.
It also means that a lot of the usual services change for four days. This guide lays out what is open and closed for Thanksgiving weekend 2026, day by day, based on what the city, Caltrain, the rink and the shopping center had published in late October. For races, holiday dinners and community meals, see our Thanksgiving events guide. For everything else happening this season, browse the events calendar.

Most of these details come from the agencies themselves. The city's holiday closures page lists both Thursday and Friday as city holidays. Our holiday closures guide has the full rundown for every holiday through New Year's.
City services, trash and parking
Offices and libraries
City administrative offices close on Thursday and Friday. The Palo Alto City Library is closed both days and the Downtown branch closes early, at 5 p.m., on Wednesday. E-books and streaming keep working. Police, fire and the dispatch center never close. Use 911 for emergencies and (650) 329-2413 for non-emergency police and fire calls.
Trash and recycling
GreenWaste does not collect on Thanksgiving. Under the city's rule, routes on or after the holiday move a day later. Thursday routes are picked up on Friday and Friday routes on Saturday, November 28. Monday to Wednesday pickups are unchanged. The household hazardous waste station on Embarcadero Way lists a closure on Saturday, November 28.
Parking and noise
Residential Parking Permit limits are not enforced on city holidays, so they lift on Thursday and Friday. Hydrants, red curbs and posted sweeping signs are always enforced. Leaf blowers and construction are not allowed on Thanksgiving under the city's noise code, which makes for a pleasantly quiet morning.
Caltrain and campus shuttles
Caltrain's holiday service page lists a weekend schedule on Thanksgiving Day and a modified schedule on Friday, November 27. The Friday timetable is released a few weeks before the holiday, so check it the week of your trip. Saturday and Sunday run the normal weekend schedule. Our Caltrain guide covers fares and stations.
On campus, most Marguerite shuttle lines stop for university holidays. Stanford keeps a few medical center routes running. If you are heading to the hospital to visit family, check the shuttle page first.
Shopping and Black Friday
Stanford Shopping Center lists itself as closed on Thanksgiving Day. On Black Friday it opens early, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to its hours page. The same page lists 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 28 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 29. Individual stores and restaurants can set different hours, so check the store you want. Parking fills by late morning on Black Friday. Downtown and California Avenue shops are mostly independents and set their own hours. Many close on Thursday, then reopen on Friday or Saturday. The Saturday after Thanksgiving is Small Business Saturday nationally, a good day to browse the independents. Our Black Friday and Small Business Saturday guide covers outlet hours and shops to visit.

Things to do over the long weekend
Thursday
Start with a walk. The Baylands are at their best in late November, with wintering ducks on the ponds. The California King Tides Project lists November 24 to 26, 2026 as king tide dates, so Thanksgiving morning may bring very high water in the marsh. The paved Dish loop is a popular pre-dinner walk too.
Friday
Skate. The Winter Lodge is closed on Thanksgiving Day but open the rest of the weekend. Holiday sessions sell out, so buy tickets online ahead. Or skip the mall and take a slow fall color walk. Ginkgos often turn bright gold around Thanksgiving in Crescent Park, Old Palo Alto and Professorville.
Saturday
Shop the downtown farmers market for persimmons, mandarins and greens. Our farmers markets guide has the hours. The same day, Stanford closes its 2026 home football schedule against SMU. Caltrain's Stanford station is not opening for 2026 games, so ride to Palo Alto station and walk. Our athletics guide covers tickets.
Sunday
The California Avenue market runs in the morning. After that, Filoli's evening Holiday Lights in Woodside, which run from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, make a festive end to the weekend. Check which nights are open and buy timed tickets ahead. See our Filoli guide.
Eating out over the holiday
Thanksgiving Day is the hardest day of the year to find a table in Palo Alto without a booking. Many independent restaurants close. The ones that open often serve a set holiday menu. Hotel dining rooms nearby are the most reliable choice. Our Thanksgiving events guide, linked above, lists the menus that had been published. On Friday and Saturday most restaurants reopen with normal menus, though some take the whole weekend off. Call ahead, or plan a casual lunch at Stanford Shopping Center on Friday. Grocery stores take orders for pies and sides by mid-November.
Weather and air
Late November is cool and can be wet. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give November an average high of 63.7°F and a low of 42.5°F, with about 1.6 inches of rain for the month. Clear nights bring frost by the end of the month. The regional air district has called wood burning bans on Thanksgiving in recent seasons, so check for a Spare the Air alert before you light a fire.
Hotels and travel
Thanksgiving is one of the easier weekends of the year for Palo Alto hotel rooms, since business travel stops and Stanford empties out. Rates often dip, especially Thursday and Friday nights. The flip side is the airports. The Wednesday before and the Sunday after are among the busiest travel days of the year at SFO and SJC, so leave extra time. When your dates are set, compare Palo Alto hotels for Thanksgiving and pick a refundable rate.
After the weekend
The holiday season starts right after. The Winter Lodge puts up its holiday tree the week after Thanksgiving and the city's Holiday Tree Lighting is on Friday, December 4, 2026 at Lytton Plaza. Our December guide picks up from there. For the rest of November, see Palo Alto in November.
Good to know
- Thursday trash routes move to Friday and Friday routes to Saturday.
- Return library books by Wednesday; branches close Thursday and Friday.
- Book Winter Lodge sessions up to 30 days ahead.
- Pack a rain jacket and a warm layer. Late November nights fall into the low 40s.
