December in Palo Alto looks nothing like a snowy holiday card. That is part of the appeal. The hills turn green after the rains, the air is crisp and clear between storms and you can walk to most holiday events in a warm jacket. The city lights a tree downtown, one neighborhood street glows with decorated firs and Stanford fills its concert hall and church with seasonal music. After mid-December the students leave and the city slows down.

This guide covers December weather, what is in season and the 2026 holiday events with published dates. It also covers the school and university calendars that empty out hotels in late December, plus packing, booking tips, outdoor ideas, day trips and a weekend plan. For neighbor-run traditions without published dates, we give the usual timing.

December weather in Palo Alto

These are NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Palo Alto station (USC00046646), the same data our weather guide uses. Sun times are approximate, in Pacific Standard Time.

December has the coldest nights of the year, though only by a fraction of a degree over January. Clear, still nights can drop below freezing and leave frost on lawns and windshields. Daytime highs in the upper 50s feel pleasant in the sun. Rain arrives in waves. A few days of steady rain, sometimes from a strong atmospheric river, are usually followed by clear, cold days with views of snow-capped peaks on the highest Bay Area mountains in some years.

Heavy storms can flood low spots near creeks and close dirt trails for a day or two. The National Weather Service Bay Area office posts flood watches and wind advisories. The regional air district can also call Winter Spare the Air alerts that ban wood burning on days with poor air quality.

What is in season

Green hills and winter birds

By December the rains have usually turned the foothills green. The contrast with the gold of summer is striking from the Dish or the overlooks along Page Mill Road. Red toyon berries brighten the chaparral. Down by the bay, winter birding is at its peak. The Baylands fills with ducks such as northern shovelers, pintails, buffleheads and ruddy ducks, plus avocets, godwits and other shorebirds. The California King Tides Project lists December 23 to 25, 2026 as king tide dates, when the highest tides flood the marsh. See the King Tides Project for times.

Fall color lingers

Ginkgo trees often hold their gold into the first week of December and some sweetgums keep their color through mid-month. After a windy storm, the leaves come down all at once.

Market produce

Citrus takes over the farmers markets: mandarins, navel oranges and Meyer lemons, along with persimmons, kiwis, root vegetables and hearty greens. Both city markets run year-round, the downtown market on Saturday mornings and the California Avenue market on Sunday mornings. Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a Friday this season, so the weekend markets should not be directly affected. Organizers post any closures on their own sites.

The tree lighting and Hanukkah

The city's free Holiday Tree Lighting is on Friday, December 4, 2026, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Lytton Plaza. The city lists School of Rock, the Boost Class Merry Holiday Dancers and the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra among the performers. Details are on the city's event page. The same evening is the first night of Hanukkah. Chabad of Palo Alto has held a public menorah lighting in front of City Hall on Hamilton Avenue for about four decades, so check with Chabad for the 2026 time.

Christmas Tree Lane

Since 1940, residents of the 1700 and 1800 blocks of Fulton Street have lined their sidewalks with lighted fir trees. The lights usually come on in mid-December and stay on nightly through December 31. In 2024 they came on December 14. It is a neighborhood tradition with no official current website and 2026 dates had not been announced by late October. Our holiday lights guide covers the lane and other displays nearby. Walk rather than drive and go on a weeknight for thinner crowds.

Holiday music and theater

Stanford Live's holiday shows include the Hot Club of San Francisco on December 3, Canadian Brass at Bing Concert Hall on December 9, A Chanticleer Christmas in Memorial Church on December 10 and a Christmas show with Camila Fernández on December 13. Book the Chanticleer concert early, since the church has fewer seats than Bing. At the Lucie Stern Theatre, TheatreWorks plays Alice, Formerly of Wonderland from December 2 to 27. The Palo Alto Children's Theatre opens A Year with Frog and Toad on December 3 and The Gingerbread Man on December 19. Our holiday season guide has more, including Diwali, shopping and New Year's.

Football

Stanford's 2026 regular season ends on November 28. The ACC Championship Game is on December 5 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bowl season follows in late December for teams that qualify.

Holidays and school calendars

  • Stanford. Autumn quarter ends on Friday, December 11, 2026. Student housing closes for winter break on December 12 and reopens on January 2, 2027. Winter quarter classes start on January 4, 2027, according to Stanford's academic calendar for new students.
  • Palo Alto Unified. Winter break runs from Monday, December 21, 2026 to Monday, January 4, 2027. Students return on January 5. In 2027 the break runs December 20, 2027 to January 3, 2028, per the district's calendars.
  • Public holidays. Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026. New Year's Day is Friday, January 1, 2027. Many shops and restaurants close or shorten hours on December 24 and 25. The Winter Lodge rink is closed on December 24, December 25 and January 1.

The effect on the city is dramatic. Early December is busy, with finals, holiday parties and business travel. From mid-December the students leave, many families head out of town once school breaks and commute traffic thins. The week between Christmas and New Year's is one of the quietest of the year.

What to pack

  • A warm, waterproof jacket. Evenings near 40°F feel colder in the damp.
  • An umbrella and shoes that can handle puddles.
  • A hat, scarf and gloves for Christmas Tree Lane, the tree lighting and outdoor skating.
  • Layers for indoors. Concert halls and restaurants are warm once you are inside.
  • Waterproof boots if you plan to hike muddy trails after storms.

Hotel demand and booking tips

Hotel demand follows the calendar closely. The first half of December is busy with business travel, holiday events and end-of-quarter visitors. From about the third week of December, business travel drops away and Stanford is empty, so Palo Alto's business hotels often have their lowest demand of the year in the days between Christmas and New Year's. That can be a good time for a quiet visit at a better rate.

A few tips help. Book early if you are coming for a specific concert weekend in early December. For the holiday week, compare Palo Alto hotels and check late December deals, since weekday rates often fall. Our where to stay guide compares the main areas.

Outdoor activities for December

  1. Skate under the lights at the Winter Lodge. Buy session tickets online in advance, especially for holiday weeks.
  2. Birdwatch at the Baylands during the king tides or any morning high tide.
  3. Hike the green hills between storms. Give dirt trails a day to dry after heavy rain.
  4. Walk Christmas Tree Lane after dark, then warm up with dinner downtown.
  5. Browse the decorated walkways at Stanford Shopping Center, which is open-air and pleasant on a dry afternoon.

Day trips that suit December

  • Filoli Holiday Lights. The Woodside estate runs evening Holiday Lights from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, according to its website. Buy tickets ahead. See our Filoli guide.
  • The coast and elephant seals. Elephant seal breeding season at Año Nuevo State Park, south of Pescadero, brings guided walks from December 15 to March 31. They cost $7 plus a $3.99 booking fee and can be booked up to 56 days ahead. The viewing area is closed from December 1 to 14. In February 2026 an H5N1 bird flu outbreak cancelled the rest of the 2025 to 2026 walks. Our Año Nuevo guide has the details. Combine it with lunch in Half Moon Bay. Check the state park's site for dates.
  • San Francisco. Holiday windows, a rainy-day museum or the big New Year's Eve fireworks over the bay. Take Caltrain and check its holiday schedule for late trains home. Our San Francisco guide has ideas, or you can book a San Francisco holiday tour.

If you only have a weekend
