Holidays in Palo Alto change more than office hours. Trash routes slide by a day, some libraries close for a full week, Caltrain switches to weekend timetables and residential parking limits lift while other parking rules stay in force. The details come from five or six different agencies, which is why people get caught out.

This page collects what each one had published as of late October 2026, focused on the holidays from November 2026 into January 2027. Where an agency had not yet posted 2027 dates, we say so instead of guessing. For what to do over the holidays, see our holiday season guide.

City holidays

The city's holiday closures page lists 11 holidays for 2026 when administrative offices and facilities are closed. The ones still ahead this year:

HolidayDate
Veterans DayWednesday, November 11, 2026
Thanksgiving DayThursday, November 26, 2026
Day after ThanksgivingFriday, November 27, 2026
Christmas DayFriday, December 25, 2026

Earlier in 2026 the city also closed for New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the city observes it on the Friday before. The page had not posted its 2027 list when we checked, so confirm New Year's Day 2027 and later dates there.

Every other Friday

Holidays are not the only closures. City Hall runs a 9/80 schedule and is closed every other Friday. The city's 2026 calendar shows the typical closed Fridays, though it notes they vary by work team. Check before you make a Friday trip to City Hall at 250 Hamilton Avenue. Utilities service also starts and stops only on weekdays that are not city holidays, a point our utilities guide covers.

What stays open

Police patrol, fire and the dispatch center work around the clock every day of the year. Use 911 for emergencies and (650) 329-2413 for non-emergency police and fire matters. The utility outage line at (650) 496-6914 also works on holidays. Our police and fire guide lists other numbers.

Libraries

The Palo Alto City Library posts holiday closures on each branch page. The Downtown Library page listed these for the coming months:

DateClosure
Wednesday, November 11, 2026Veterans Day, closed all day
Wednesday, November 25, 2026Day before Thanksgiving, closes early at 5 p.m.
Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27, 2026Thanksgiving, closed all day
Thursday, December 24, 2026 to Friday, January 1, 2027Winter holiday closure for the Children's, College Terrace and Downtown libraries
Friday, December 25, 2026Christmas Day, closed all day
Friday, January 1, 2027New Year's Day, closed all day

Mitchell Park and Rinconada are the larger branches and were not named in the week-long winter closure. Their hours between Christmas and New Year's may still differ from normal, so check the library's "Is the library open today?" page. Regular hours also vary by branch. Downtown, for example, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday. Our libraries guide describes each branch. E-books and streaming through the library keep working while buildings are closed.

Trash, recycling and compost

GreenWaste of Palo Alto does not collect on three holidays: New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The rule from the city's holiday page: if your regular collection day falls on or after one of those holidays, it moves to the next day. Friday collection happens on Saturday. Applied to this season's dates, that works out as follows:

WeekHolidayEffect under the city's rule
Thanksgiving weekThursday, November 26, 2026Thursday routes move to Friday. Friday routes move to Saturday, November 28. Monday to Wednesday routes are unchanged.
Christmas weekFriday, December 25, 2026Friday routes move to Saturday, December 26. Monday to Thursday are unchanged.
New Year's weekFriday, January 1, 2027Friday routes move to Saturday, January 2, 2027. Monday to Thursday are unchanged.

Veterans Day and the day after Thanksgiving are not on GreenWaste's list of no-pickup days. If in doubt, call GreenWaste at (650) 493-4894.

Holiday trees and hazardous waste

For four weeks after Christmas, GreenWaste picks up holiday trees from the curb beside your green cart. Remove the stand and decorations, skip flocked trees and cut trunks into 4-foot lengths. The city's Household Hazardous Waste Station on Embarcadero Way lists closures on November 28 and December 26, 2026 and on January 1 and 2, 2027. Our trash and recycling guide covers both.

Caltrain

Caltrain groups holidays into three kinds of service on its holiday service page. For the rest of 2026:

DateService
Veterans Day, November 11Regular weekday schedule
Thanksgiving Day, November 26Weekend schedule
Day after Thanksgiving, November 27Modified schedule
Christmas Eve, December 24Modified schedule
Christmas Day, December 25Weekend schedule
New Year's Eve, December 31Regular weekday schedule

Caltrain releases modified timetables a few weeks before each date, so check its site the week before. Monthly passes are honored for unlimited travel on the listed holidays except Christmas Eve. Caltrain's page listed only 2026 dates when we checked, so look there for New Year's Day 2027. Our Caltrain guide covers fares and stations. Caltrain also runs a seasonal Holiday Train event, separate from its regular service.

Parking on holidays

Holidays relax some parking rules but not others.

  • Residential Parking Permit zones. The city's RPP FAQ says the restrictions are enforced Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. depending on the district. It adds that city holidays are exempt. Our residential parking permits guide explains the districts.
  • Always enforced. The same FAQ says street sweeping restrictions, fire hydrants, red curbs and other legally prohibited parking are always in effect. Posted temporary no-parking signs for sweeping stay enforced. Our street sweeping guide explains those routes.
  • Downtown and California Avenue. We did not find a city statement on holiday enforcement of time limits in the commercial districts or the city garages. Read the signs where you park. Our parking guide covers the options.

Other rules that change on holidays

  • Noise. Leaf blowers and construction are not allowed on holidays under the city's noise ordinance. Our leaf blowers and noise guide lists the holidays the code covers.
  • Fireplaces. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has called wood burning bans on Thanksgiving and New Year's Day in recent seasons. Check for a Spare the Air Alert before lighting a fire. Our air quality guide explains how.
  • Fireworks. Fireworks of every kind, including safe and sane, are illegal in Palo Alto, on New Year's Eve as on any other night.

Planning around the holidays

A few habits save trouble. Put your trash day change on the calendar as soon as Thanksgiving week starts. Return library books before December 24 if you use one of the three branches that close for the week. Allow extra time for City Hall business in late December, when holidays and 9/80 Fridays stack up. For New Year's Eve plans in town, see our New Year's Eve guide.

Good to know

  • City offices close November 11, November 26 and 27 and December 25, 2026.
  • No trash pickup on Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Day. Later routes that week shift a day.
  • Three library branches close December 24 through January 1.
  • Caltrain runs a weekend schedule on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
  • RPP limits lift on city holidays. Hydrant, red curb and sweeping rules do not.
