October is the month when Palo Alto finally admits that summer is ending, but only slowly. Afternoons are still warm enough for patio lunches. The nights are noticeably cooler, the light turns golden earlier in the evening and the first storm of the rainy season often rolls in near the end of the month. On campus, the academic year is in full swing, with football, alumni weekends and a packed concert calendar.

This guide covers the weather, what is in season and the recurring October events, with 2027 dates where organizers have published them. It also covers school and university dates, what to pack, hotel advice, outdoor ideas, day trips and a short weekend plan. Since this guide was written at the very end of October 2026, the 2026 dates mentioned are a record of what happened and a guide to the usual timing.

October weather in Palo Alto

The table uses NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Palo Alto station (USC00046646), the same figures on our weather page. Sun times are approximate, in Pacific Daylight Time, which runs until the first Sunday in November.

Early October can feel like September, with a late heat wave possible in the first week or two. By the second half of the month highs settle into the low 70s and nights drop into the 40s. The first real rain of the season often arrives in late October or early November. One storm can bring most of the month's average in a day, then the sun returns.

October is also when dry offshore winds are most likely, which keeps fire danger high until the rains soak in. The National Weather Service Bay Area office posts Red Flag Warnings and storm forecasts.

What is in season

Fire season to rainy season

The hills stay gold through most of October. Until a good soaking rain arrives, fire season is not over. During Red Flag Warnings some trails in the hills close and Stanford can limit access to the Dish. After the first storm, the dust settles, the air clears and the earliest green shoots appear on the slopes within a couple of weeks. Trails can be muddy for a day or two after heavy rain.

Winter birds arrive

Wintering ducks begin arriving on the bay in larger numbers through October. Northern shovelers, northern pintails and buffleheads join the shorebirds already feeding at the Baylands. It is a good month to start birding before the winter peak.

Fall color and monarchs

Palo Alto's fall color comes late, mostly in November, but a few street trees start turning by the end of October. On the coast, monarch butterflies usually begin gathering at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz from mid-October.

Market produce

At the Saturday downtown market and the Sunday California Avenue market look for persimmons, pomegranates, apples, pears, winter squash, pumpkins and the last tomatoes of the year. Both markets run year-round.

Every other October the city turns downtown into an outdoor gallery of light and media art. Past editions projected artwork onto City Hall and filled plazas and alleys with interactive pieces. The festival is free and best seen after dark. The fifth edition is set for October 13 to 16, 2027. Our downtown guide covers parking and where to eat before a night walk. See the events calendar for the rest of the year.

Stanford Reunion Homecoming and football

Each October thousands of Stanford alumni return for Reunion Homecoming, a long weekend of class parties and talks that is usually built around a home football game. The 2026 event ran October 15 to 18. The 2027 dates had not been posted in October 2026. Check the Stanford Alumni Association.

In 2026 Stanford played two October home games, Elon on October 17 and a Friday night game against NC State on October 23. The ACC has named Stanford's 2027 conference home opponents as Cal, Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse and Virginia, with dates still to come. Our Stanford athletics guide explains tickets, bags and game day traffic.

Skating and Halloween

The Winter Lodge opened its 2026 to 2027 outdoor skating season on October 16 and runs until April 11, 2027. Session tickets are sold online in advance. October 31 falls on a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027. Halloween in Palo Alto is mostly a neighborhood affair, with trick-or-treating on residential streets. Check the city calendar for one-off events.

Holidays and school calendars

Palo Alto Unified has one non-student day in early October each year: a staff development day, set for Friday, October 2 in 2026 and Friday, October 1 in 2027, according to the district's published calendars. That makes for a three-day weekend for local families. Indigenous Peoples' Day, also observed as Columbus Day, falls on the second Monday of October. It is not a PAUSD closure in either year.

Stanford's autumn quarter runs through October. Campus is lively on weekdays and full of visitors on reunion and football weekends. Daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday in November, which was November 1 in 2026 and will be November 7 in 2027.

What to pack

  • Layers. Short sleeves for warm afternoons and a fleece or light jacket for nights in the 40s.
  • A compact umbrella or rain shell late in the month, in case the first storm arrives.
  • Warm clothes for night events. Code:ART and evening football get chilly.
  • Shoes with grip for trails that may be dusty or briefly muddy.

Hotel demand and booking tips

October is a high-demand month. Reunion Homecoming fills hotels near campus for a long weekend. Football weekends, fall conferences and steady weekday business travel keep rates firm. In 2027, Code:ART adds a reason to stay downtown midweek.

  • Book reunion and football weekends early. Rooms within walking distance of campus go first.
  • Compare weekday and weekend rates. Business hotels often charge more Monday to Thursday.
  • Consider Menlo Park, Mountain View or Redwood City on the Caltrain line if Palo Alto is full.

Outdoor activities for October

  1. Hike the foothills. Cooler afternoons make longer hikes comfortable again. Pearson-Arastradero Preserve has rolling grassland and oak loops close to town. Our hiking guide lists more.
  2. Watch the bay fill with ducks. The Baylands boardwalk and levees are a short drive or bike ride from downtown.
  3. Skate outdoors. The Winter Lodge is a rare outdoor rink in a mild climate.
  4. Bike after rain. The first storm clears the air and the views of the hills are sharp the day after.
  5. Catch an early sunset. By late October the sun sets around 6:15 p.m., so a sunset walk fits after work.

Day trips that suit October

  • Half Moon Bay pumpkin season. Farms along Highway 92 open pumpkin patches and corn mazes. The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival usually runs on the weekend after Indigenous Peoples' Day. Highway 92 backs up badly on October weekends, so leave early or go on a weekday.
  • Santa Cruz monarchs. The butterflies start clustering at Natural Bridges in mid-October. Our Santa Cruz guide covers the visitor center and the Boardwalk.
  • Wine country at the end of harvest. October is still harvest time in Napa and Sonoma. Reservations are usually required. You can book a guided wine country tour and skip the drive.

If you only have a weekend

  1. Saturday morning: the downtown farmers market for persimmons and pastries.
  2. Late morning: walk the Stanford campus, the Main Quad and the free Cantor Arts Center.
  3. Afternoon: a football game if Stanford is home, or a foothills hike while it is warm.
  4. Saturday evening: dinner downtown. In 2027, finish with a night walk through Code:ART if your visit overlaps.
  5. Sunday: leave early for Half Moon Bay and the pumpkin farms, or stay local for skating at the Winter Lodge.

Next month brings the rains and the Big Game: see Palo Alto in November. For warmer weather, see Palo Alto in September.

  • Memorial Church was closed for maintenance from June 15 to October 31, 2026. Check Stanford's site for visiting hours after it reopens.
  • Keep an eye on Red Flag Warnings until the first good rain.
