Palo Alto has plenty of places to bank, but they are not spread evenly. Most branches cluster in three places. The first is downtown around University Avenue. The second runs along El Camino Real near California Avenue and Page Mill Road. The third is the Midtown shopping area on Middlefield Road. South Palo Alto and the east side have only a few. If you want a branch you can walk or bike to, it pays to know where they are before you open an account.

This guide lists the bank and credit union branches in our business directory by area. It notes which open on Saturday, what each credit union says about membership and how recent bank mergers changed the names on the doors. It describes what the institutions publish. It is not financial advice. It does not compare interest rates, fees or account terms. Read the current terms on each institution's site before you choose.

Downtown and University Avenue

Downtown has the densest cluster of branches in the city, all within a few blocks of the Palo Alto Caltrain station. Our downtown guide covers the surrounding streets and parking.

A few details set these branches apart. Bank of America calls its Lytton Avenue office the Palo Alto Main financial center. When our directory checked the bank's locator in October 2026, it was the only Bank of America financial center listed in the city. It offers a notary and foreign currency exchange. Citibank's University Avenue branch includes an International Banking Center. Wells Fargo's downtown branch is the only one of its three Palo Alto branches with Saturday hours.

Fidelity Investments also runs an Investor Center at 251 University Avenue. Map apps sometimes tag it as a bank, but it is a brokerage and financial planning office, not a place to deposit a paycheck.

El Camino Real and California Avenue

The second cluster sits on El Camino Real between Town & Country Village and Page Mill Road, plus a pair of branches on South California Avenue near Stanford Research Park.

The Chase branch is inside Town & Country Village, so you can combine banking with lunch or groceries. First Tech's branch is on the first floor of an office building near the corner of El Camino Real and Page Mill Road. Wells Fargo still names its South California Avenue branch Stanford Industrial Park, the 1950s name of what is now Stanford Research Park. The California Avenue guide covers the shops and cafes a short walk away.

Midtown, south Palo Alto and the east side

Midtown, on Middlefield Road near Colorado and Loma Verde avenues, has two full branches and a standalone ATM:

  • Chase, Middlefield Rd at 2846 Middlefield Road, with Saturday morning hours.
  • Wells Fargo, Midtown Palo Alto at 2754 Middlefield Road, a weekday branch with a notary.
  • A Bank of America walk-up ATM, which the bank calls Colorado-Middlefield, at 2750 Middlefield Road.

Farther south, U.S. Bank's Palo Alto South branch is at 4291 El Camino Real, with drive-up and walk-up ATMs that the bank lists as open 24 hours. On the east side, Stanford FCU's Embarcadero Road branch at 1860 Embarcadero Road sits just off Highway 101. It is a cashless branch. You can open accounts, talk about loans and use the notary, but you cannot withdraw cash from a teller there. An ATM is outside.

For private banking, J.P. Morgan Private Bank lists a Palo Alto office at 3223 Hanover Street. It meets wealth management clients by appointment and is not a walk-in branch.

Banking on a Saturday

Credit unions and who can join

Credit unions are member-owned cooperatives. You have to qualify for membership before you can open an account. Each one sets its own rules. Here is what the four credit unions with Palo Alto branches publish:

  • Stanford Federal Credit Union says membership is open to everyone. It was founded by Stanford University employees in 1959. For years only university staff could join. Today no Stanford connection is needed. Its main line, 888-723-7328, is answered around the clock.
  • First Tech Federal Credit Union says it serves technology-oriented companies and their employees. Many members qualify through what it calls Select Employer Groups, which it says include HP Inc., Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Microsoft, Agilent, Intel, Cisco and Google. Its membership pages carry the full rules.
  • Technology Credit Union, known as Tech CU, describes itself as designed for tech industry employees and their families. It says it partners with more than 500 companies. Employees of Fairchild Semiconductor founded it around 1960. Check its membership pages for the current rules.
  • Provident Credit Union invites people to join as member-owners, but its Palo Alto branch page does not spell out who is eligible. Ask the branch or check Provident's website.

The phrase "and their families" matters. Many credit unions let relatives of current members join, so ask before assuming you do not qualify. Tech CU's founding story is part of the Peninsula's chip history, which our page on Shockley, Fairchild and the semiconductor boom tells.

Shared branching

Stanford FCU says its members can use about 6,000 shared branches and about 30,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide through the CO-OP network. Members of other CO-OP credit unions can likewise make deposits and transfers at its University Avenue branch on weekdays. The Embarcadero Road branch is cashless, so call ahead if you need cash.

Bank name changes to know

A string of mergers has changed the signs on several Palo Alto buildings. Older maps, receipts and even some map apps still show the old names.

  • Union Bank branches became part of U.S. Bank. The former Union Bank at 400 University Avenue is now U.S. Bank's Palo Alto Main Branch.
  • Bank of the West became BMO in 2023. BMO's branch is at 2600 El Camino Real.
  • First Republic became part of J.P. Morgan.
  • Boston Private's Palo Alto office now redirects to First Citizens.

If an old checkbook or debit card carries one of these names, contact the current bank about replacements and routing numbers.

Notaries, safe deposit boxes and other services

Branches differ in what they offer beyond everyday banking. These are the services our directory pages list:

  • Notary. Bank of America on Lytton Avenue, Wells Fargo downtown and in Midtown, both U.S. Bank branches and Stanford FCU, where it is free for members. First Tech offers a notary by appointment. Bank notaries are often reserved for customers, so call first.
  • Safe deposit boxes. Listed at both Citibank branches, BMO, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo's downtown and South California Avenue branches. Stanford FCU does not offer them.
  • Foreign currency. Bank of America's Lytton Avenue financial center lists currency exchange.
  • Appointments. Chase, BMO, First Tech, Provident and Tech CU all let you book time with a banker, in some cases by video.

For a notary outside banking hours, the UPS Stores in town list notary service too. Our legal help and notaries guide covers those options.

Opening an account after a move

Banks and credit unions set their own requirements, but most ask for government photo ID and your Social Security number or taxpayer number. Many also want proof of your new address. A first bill from City of Palo Alto Utilities often serves, which is one more reason to open that account early. Our moving checklist puts it near the top of the list.

New arrivals from abroad should ask each bank what it accepts before visiting. Citibank's two Palo Alto branches include International Banking Centers. Wells Fargo lists staff who speak five languages at its South California Avenue branch.

Good to know

  • Stanford FCU says anyone can join. First Tech and Tech CU focus on tech employers and their families.
  • The Stanford FCU branch on Embarcadero Road is cashless.
  • Seven branches in our directory list Saturday hours. None lists Sunday hours.
  • Union Bank is now U.S. Bank and Bank of the West is now BMO.
  • This page describes what institutions publish. It is not financial advice.
