On this page
The breakfast burrito is a California institution: eggs, potatoes, cheese and usually bacon or chorizo rolled in a big flour tortilla, with salsa on the side. It is cheap, it travels well and it gets you through a morning hike or a long drive. Palo Alto does not have a 6 a.m. burrito window, but it has more options than most visitors realize. Midtown has two taquerias with breakfast on the menu. Town & Country Village has a new egg counter that opens at 7 a.m. A nonprofit cafe at Mitchell Park and the clubhouse cafe at the city golf course both serve one. On weekends two California Avenue restaurants add a breakfast burrito to their brunch menus.
Every place on this page lists a breakfast burrito on a menu we checked in October 2026, either on its own site or in a verified page in our business directory. Menus change, so treat fillings as examples and call ahead if you are set on one.

What goes into a breakfast burrito
There is no single recipe. The version found at most California taquerias is built on scrambled eggs, potatoes and cheese, with bacon, sausage or chorizo. Taquerias often add beans and pico de gallo. Cafes tend to go lighter, with spinach, avocado or roasted vegetables. In Palo Alto you will find all three approaches:
- Taqueria style. Big, heavy and cheap, with a choice of meats and a salsa bar. Como Esta and Sancho's fit here.
- Cafe style. Smaller and more composed, like the black bean and butternut squash burrito at Ada's or the tater tot version at Hatched.
- Brunch style. Plated with sides at a sit-down restaurant, as at Sun of Wolf and La Bohème.
Chilaquiles, fried tortilla chips simmered in salsa and topped with eggs, are the usual alternative on the same menus when you would rather use a fork.
The early starts
Hatched, Town & Country Village
Hatched opened in January 2026 at 855 El Camino Real, across the road from Stanford. It is an egg-focused counter from the Poon brothers and their Kurated Kitchens restaurant group, with egg sandwiches, avocado toasts and an espresso and matcha bar. The breakfast burrito comes with tater tots inside, which adds crunch. Hatched opens at 7 a.m. every day and closes at 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 4:30 p.m. Friday to Sunday. It is an easy grab before a campus tour.
Ada's Cafe, Mitchell Park
Ada's Cafe is a nonprofit cafe in the building shared by the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center at 3700 Middlefield Road. It trains and employs people with developmental disabilities. Its breakfast burrito is filled with black beans and butternut squash, one of the few vegetarian-first versions in town. Coffee comes from Moksha Roasting. It opens at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Monday. The Magical Bridge Playground is next door, which makes it a natural stop with kids.
Baylands Cafe, Baylands Golf Links
Baylands Cafe is the clubhouse cafe at the city-owned golf course at 1875 Embarcadero Road. You do not have to golf to eat there. The menu lists breakfast until 1 p.m., including scrambles, a breakfast burrito, French toast and pancakes. Its cafe page lists hours from 8 a.m. daily, which suits a bird walk or a run at the Baylands Nature Preserve down the road. Call for takeout.
The Midtown taquerias
Two taquerias sit a block apart on Middlefield Road in Midtown. Both put a breakfast burrito on the regular menu, so you can order one at noon.
Como Esta Taqueria, 2605 Middlefield Road
Como Esta Taqueria lists a breakfast burrito among its specials and has a full breakfast section with huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, machaca and a breakfast plate. Machaca is shredded dried beef scrambled with eggs, a northern Mexican breakfast that also works well in a tortilla. Order through its Toast page to skip the line. It is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday.
Sancho's Taqueria, 2723 Middlefield Road
Sancho's is a fast-casual taqueria from a local group founded in 2005, known for Baja-style fish tacos and California burritos. Breakfast-style plates such as chilaquiles and huevos rancheros sit beside its breakfast burrito. It opens at 10 a.m. every day, including Sunday, which makes it the Midtown pick for a late weekend breakfast.

Weekend brunch burritos on California Avenue
Sun of Wolf at 406 California Avenue is a Mexican restaurant with a seasonal menu. Its weekend brunch, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., includes a breakfast burrito with bacon and potatoes alongside chilaquiles, chicken mole with scrambled eggs and eggs on huitlacoche tortillas. The bar leans on mezcal and tequila if brunch calls for a drink.
La Bohème at 415 California Avenue is a French bistro, so a breakfast burrito is a surprise on its menu. Weekend brunch from 9:30 a.m. lists one next to two-egg breakfasts, steak and eggs, a long list of omelettes and Benedicts. It takes bookings by phone or OpenTable. Our brunch guide covers other weekend menus.
A hotel breakfast option
The Kitchen at Palo Alto is the restaurant inside the Hilton Garden Inn at 4216 El Camino Real. Its plated breakfast menu lists a breakfast burrito and a veggie breakfast burrito, along with omelets, bagels and French toast. When we checked its menu in October 2026 the full breakfast buffet was $24.99 and a grab-and-go bag was also offered. Walk-ins are welcome. If you are planning a stay in south Palo Alto, you can compare hotels along El Camino Real and have breakfast downstairs.
Ordering tips
- Choose your meat. Bacon, sausage and chorizo are the usual choices. Machaca and carnitas show up at taquerias.
- Ask about potatoes. Some kitchens use diced home fries, others tater tots or none at all.
- Get salsa on the side. It keeps the tortilla from going soggy if you are eating in the car.
- Order ahead for groups. Como Esta takes online orders and Hatched handles party trays and boxed meals.
- Check the day. Ada's is closed on Monday and Como Esta on Sunday. The two California Avenue brunches run on weekends only.
