About Como Esta Taqueria

Como Esta Taqueria is a neighborhood Mexican spot on Middlefield Road in Midtown Palo Alto, at 2605 Middlefield in Suite A. It is a casual taqueria that works for a quick lunch, a burrito on the way home or a family takeout night. Its online ordering page lists it simply as Como Esta.

The taqueria does not run a separate website that we could find. Its online ordering page on Toast is the best source for the current menu and hours. It is what we used to build this page. The page shows the Middlefield Road address, a full menu and opening hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.

The menu is long for a small taqueria and covers most of the classics. It is organized into clear sections:

  • Burritos: meat burritos in chico, regular and super sizes, plus a fajita burrito and a low carb option. Seafood burritos come with shrimp or fish. Specials include a breakfast burrito and the Double Trouble.
  • Tacos: regular and super tacos, fish and shrimp tacos, quesabirria tacos and a vegetarian taco.
  • Plates: al pastor, carne asada, carnitas, barbacoa, pollo asado, chile relleno, enchilada, flautas, fajitas and a shrimp chipotle plate, among others.
  • Quesadillas and nachos: corn and flour quesadillas, a suiza quesadilla, mushroom and shrimp versions, plus meat, vegetarian and shrimp nachos.
  • Specials: taco salads, a torta and tortilla soup.
  • Breakfast: huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, machaca and a breakfast plate, along with the breakfast burrito.

Drinks include agua frescas, Jarritos, iced tea and sodas. Among the sides you will find chips with salsa or guacamole, rice, beans, extra meats and a homemade flan for dessert. Menus change, so check the ordering page for what is available today.

Vegetarian and lighter options

Vegetarians have real choices here, which is not always true at a small taqueria. There is a whole vegetarian burrito section with bean and cheese, veggie, chile relleno and tofu ranchero burritos in two or three sizes. Tofu ranchero also appears as a plate and a quesadilla. Low carb versions of the meat, shrimp and veggie burritos are on the menu for people cutting back on tortillas. If you avoid lard or have allergies, ask at the counter how beans and other items are prepared, since the ordering page does not say.

How to order

You can order in person or online through the Toast ordering page for pickup. The page notes that orders placed through Toast are commission free and go straight to the restaurant. Ordering ahead is the easiest way to get a family-size takeout order ready on time. The ordering page shows a call button but not a phone number, so online ordering is the most reliable way to reach the taqueria in advance.

Who it suits

Como Esta suits people who want a filling, familiar Mexican meal without a reservation or a long wait. The three burrito sizes make it easy to feed a small child and a hungry adult from the same menu. Plates with rice and beans suit a sit-down dinner at home. The taco salads and tortilla soup give lighter choices. Groups and offices can build a mixed order online, since every item is listed with its options. It is not a place for cocktails or a long evening out, so look elsewhere for a margarita and a table with a view.

Tips for visiting

  • Plan around Sundays. The taqueria is closed on Sunday, so pick another day for a weekend burrito run.
  • Go early for breakfast items. The doors open at 10 a.m., so a breakfast burrito or chilaquiles works as a late breakfast or brunch.
  • Order big orders ahead. Placing a large order online means less waiting when you arrive.
