Christmas Day is the quietest day of the year in Palo Alto. Stanford has emptied out for its winter closure, commuters are gone, the shopping center is dark and University Avenue is so calm you can hear the trains from Lytton Plaza. For families at home, that is the point. For visitors, it means planning a little: knowing what closes, where to find a meal and which traditions on the days around Christmas are worth catching.

Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday, December 25. Christmas Eve is a Thursday, so most people get a long weekend through Sunday, December 27. This guide covers closures, transit, services and screenings, outdoor ideas and food. For the full week from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day, see our winter holidays week guide.

What is open and closed

Christmas Day is a city holiday. Here is what each agency or business had published as of late October 2026:

Police, fire and dispatch work every day of the year. Residential permit parking is not enforced on city holidays, but hydrant, red curb and sweeping rules are. Stanford's winter closure runs from December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027. Our holiday closures guide has the details and links to each source.

Caltrain

Caltrain's holiday service page lists a modified schedule on Christmas Eve and a weekend schedule on Christmas Day. The modified timetable is posted a few weeks ahead. Monthly passes are honored for unlimited travel on the listed holidays except Christmas Eve. Saturday and Sunday after Christmas run the normal weekend schedule.

Trash and trees

GreenWaste does not collect on Christmas Day. Friday routes move to Saturday, December 26. For four weeks after Christmas, GreenWaste picks up holiday trees from the curb beside your green cart. Remove the stand and decorations, skip flocked trees and cut trunks into 4-foot lengths. Our trash and recycling guide explains more. The city's household hazardous waste station is closed on December 26.

Christmas Eve traditions

Services at Memorial Church

Stanford Memorial Church holds the town's best-known Christmas services. The church was closed to visitors for maintenance from June to October 2026. Its 2025 Advent and Christmas schedule gives a good idea of what to expect:

  • Festival of Lessons and Carols, Friday and Saturday, December 5 and 6, 2025, at 7 p.m.
  • Christmas Eve ecumenical family service at 4 p.m., with a collection of new toys and books for local children.
  • Christmas Eve candlelight service at 8 p.m.
  • Catholic Midnight Mass, followed by a Christmas Day Mass at 12:30 p.m.

The services were open to all and livestreamed. The 2026 schedule had not been posted as of November 1, 2026. Arrive early for the candlelight service, which fills the church. Separately, Stanford Live presents A Chanticleer Christmas in Memorial Church on December 10, 2026.

It's a Wonderful Life at the Stanford Theatre

The Stanford Theatre on University Avenue has made a tradition of showing Frank Capra's 1946 It's a Wonderful Life on December 24. The screenings returned in 2023 after a closure for the pandemic and renovations. In 2024 there were shows at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. for $7. The 4 p.m. show sold out the day before. We could not confirm the 2026 plans, so check the theater's calendar in December. Tickets are sold at the box office.

Lights and outings

Most of the season's light displays stay up through Christmas night:

  1. Christmas Tree Lane. Residents of the 1700 and 1800 blocks of Fulton Street have lined the sidewalks with lighted firs since 1940. The lights usually stay on nightly through December 31. Walk it after dinner on Christmas night, when the crowds are thin.
  2. Filoli Holiday Lights. The Woodside estate runs its evening lights from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Not every night is open, so check the calendar for December 24 and 25.
  3. Christmas in the Park. San Jose's free downtown display runs from November 27, 2026 to January 1, 2027.

Our holiday lights guide covers all three and more.

A walk at high tide

The California King Tides Project lists December 23 to 25, 2026 as king tide dates. The highest tides of the season flood the marsh at the Baylands Nature Preserve, which makes a Christmas morning walk on the boardwalk unusually dramatic. Winter birding is also at its peak. Check a tide table for the hour of high water.

Where to eat

Finding a restaurant meal on December 25 takes planning. Many local places close. Those that open often post hours only a week or two ahead.

  • Closed on Christmas Day, according to their own listings: Fleming's at Stanford Shopping Center (open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve), The Sea by Alexander's, Sushi House and Coconuts.
  • Hotel restaurants are the likeliest sit-down option, since hotels stay open through the holiday. Ask when you book. Our hotel restaurants guide lists them.
  • Chinese restaurants have a long tradition of opening on December 25. Call ahead, since local hours vary year to year.
  • Fast food. The Jack in the Box at 2280 El Camino Real lists a lobby and drive-thru open 24 hours.

Cooking at home

Grocery shopping needs to happen by Christmas Eve. Country Sun and Sigona's list Christmas Day as closed. Piazza's in the Charleston Shopping Center lists shorter hours on Christmas Eve and closes on Christmas Day. It runs a separate holiday ordering site for seasonal meals and platters, so order early. The Saturday farmers market downtown returns on December 26.

Christmas with kids

Children are the ones most likely to notice that the town has shut. A few ideas for the long weekend:

  • The family service. Memorial Church's 4 p.m. Christmas Eve service in 2025 was aimed at all ages, with a toy and book drive for local children.
  • Bikes and scooters. New wheels get their first run on Christmas morning. The quiet streets and the Bryant Street bike boulevard are at their safest of the year.
  • Parks. City parks stay open from sunrise to sunset on holidays. The Magical Bridge Playground at Mitchell Park is a favorite.
  • Skating on the 26th. The Winter Lodge reopens after Christmas. Sessions over the school break sell out, so buy tickets online as soon as they appear.

PAUSD's winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 4, 2027, so there is plenty of time to fill.

Good to know

  • Check for a Spare the Air alert before lighting a fire on Christmas Day.
  • Fireworks of every kind are illegal in Palo Alto.
  • December averages a high of 57.6°F and a low of 38.6°F. Bring layers for evening lights.
  • The sun sets before 5 p.m. Plan outdoor time for the morning or early afternoon.

The days after

December 26 brings Palo Alto partly back to life. Stanford Shopping Center opens from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Winter Lodge reopens for skating through December 31. Movie theaters are a popular escape on the long weekend. Our movie theaters guide lists what is open nearby. If family is staying through New Year's, compare Palo Alto hotels for the holiday week. It is usually the softest week of the year for business hotels.
