About the Stanford Health Care Gift Shop

The Stanford Health Care Gift Shop is the retail shop at Stanford Hospital, 500 Pasteur Drive. It sells gifts for patients, comfort items for families and snacks and small necessities for visitors who are spending long hours at the hospital. The shop says its retail locations aim to offer a tranquil and welcoming place where guests can take a short break from the clinical setting.

The shop's website lists two locations. The main one is the Stanford Hospital Gift Shop at 500 Pasteur Drive. The second is the Helen Salzman Boutique at 900 Blake Wilbur Drive, with its own phone number and shorter hours. The website does not say who operates the shops or where proceeds go, so we do not guess here.

The main shop is in the newer hospital building at 500 Pasteur Drive, which admitted its first patients in November 2019. Stanford Hospital is made up of two connected buildings, at 300 and 500 Pasteur Drive. The boutique's address, 900 Blake Wilbur Drive, is one of the outpatient buildings nearby. Visitors who park at the Pasteur Visitor Garage, 200 Pasteur Drive, can use a free door-to-door cart shuttle that links the garage with both Pasteur Drive buildings and with 875 and 900 Blake Wilbur Drive.

What the shop sells

The online store's categories give a good picture of what you can find:

• For the patient: balloons, books, faux flowers and plants, comfort items, loungewear, socks and a "Bedside Essentials" section.
• Cards and wrap: greeting cards, gift wrap and stationery.
• Food: candy, snacks and beverages, including a section of healthier snack options.
• New babies: baby items for families visiting a newborn.
• Home and personal care: candles, decorative accents, kitchen and garden items, personal care and travel items.
• Stanford gifts: apparel and Stanford-branded accessories.

The site also has seasonal collections, such as Halloween and Christmas. The FAQ does not list rules on flowers or balloons. Before you buy either for a patient, ask the nurses on the unit you are visiting whether they are allowed.

Ordering online and pickup

You can shop through the website and choose pickup or shipping. The shop's FAQ sets out how it works:

• Pickup at the hospital. Orders can be collected at the Stanford Hospital Gift Shop, typically the next business day. Wait for the "Order is Ready for Pick-Up" email, then come between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Bring identification and your order confirmation.
• Pickup in Redwood City. The FAQ also lists the Gift Shop Warehouse at 550 Broadway Street, Redwood City, as a pickup point, open 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays.
• Holding time. Orders not collected within 30 business days are canceled and refunded.
• Shipping. Only to residential addresses or PO boxes within California. The shop cannot ship out of state.
• Questions. Email [email protected]. The shop aims to reply within one business day.

The FAQ adds that its patient care unit and visitor service is only for patients and their visitors, not for staff.

Returns

In-store purchases cannot be returned. They can be exchanged for items of equal or greater value. Online purchases can be returned within seven days, less shipping fees, by mail or free of charge at the gift shop. Sale, promotional and special order items are final sale.

Tips for visitors

• Weekdays only. Both shops list weekday hours only. If you are visiting on a weekend, order online ahead of time or bring a gift with you.
• Call ahead. The main shop's number is 650-497-6477. A quick call can confirm that an item is in stock.
