About the hospital
Animal Hospital of Palo Alto is a general veterinary practice at 4111 El Camino Real, in the south part of town. The practice often shortens its name to AHOPA, which is also its web address. It treats dogs and cats and says new clients are welcome. The phone number is 650-493-2738.
The hospital lists Dr. Linda Manley Lawrence as medical director and Raikhan Issataeva, RVT, as hospital manager. It is part of the Companion Pet Partners family, which also runs Midtown Veterinary Hospital. The website says it serves pet owners across Palo Alto, Stanford and Menlo Park.
This page describes the hospital and the services it publishes. It is not veterinary advice and does not judge the quality of care. Ask the hospital's team about your own pet.
Services
The hospital's service list covers routine and sick care for dogs and cats:
- Wellness exams and vaccinations
- Puppy and kitten care
- Sick visits and urgent care during open hours
- Diagnostics, with on-site laboratory services
- Dental cleanings and other dental services
- Surgery, including spays and neuters
- Health certificates
- Behavioral counseling and nutrition counseling
- End-of-life care
- An on-site pharmacy
- A Dog Spa Day service
The hospital explains urgent care as care for conditions that are not life-threatening but need prompt attention, such as minor injuries, vomiting or diarrhea. If your pet has an urgent problem, it asks you to call right away so staff can try to fit you in. It does not see exotic pets such as birds or reptiles.
Problems the hospital sees
The website also has a guide to common symptoms that bring pets in. It lists vomiting and diarrhea, lethargy, limping, coughing or sneezing, itchy skin and rashes, ear infections, excessive thirst, weight changes, bad breath, appetite changes, red eyes, seizures, lumps, breathing trouble and changes in behavior. This guide is general reading, so call the hospital if you are worried about your own animal.
Curbside drop-off visits
One option suits busy schedules. With a curbside drop-off appointment, you book online or by phone and pick the drop-off option. The hospital sends a reminder with an arrival window, directions to its curbside parking area and any prep steps, such as fasting.
When you arrive, you park in the curbside area and call or text with your name, your pet's name and a description of your car. A staff member comes out, goes over the reason for the visit and collects signatures. Your pet is then taken inside for the exam. The veterinarian calls you with findings and an estimate. Any extra treatment goes ahead only after you approve it. Staff call again when your pet is ready and walk you through medications and home care at pickup.
The hospital says this setup also helps pets that do better without a long wait in the lobby.
Booking and payment
The hospital recommends an appointment for routine care. You can book online through its website or call 650-493-2738. It also offers a patient app, linked from its website. For payment, it accepts the CareCredit credit card as a financing option, subject to credit approval. The website runs occasional seasonal specials. Check its specials page for the current offer and its terms.
Tips for pet owners
- The hospital is closed on weekends. Save the number of a 24-hour emergency hospital, such as Veterinary Emergency Group on El Camino Real, for nights and weekends. In a true emergency, go straight to an emergency hospital.
- Bring any medications, past records and notes on changes you have noticed, as the hospital asks for drop-off visits.
- If you are new to Palo Alto, our pets guide covers pet licensing, vets and local dog rules.
- After a checkup, our dog parks guide lists places for a walk or an off-leash run.
