About Lee & Woo Orthodontics
Lee & Woo Orthodontics is a Bay Area orthodontic practice with three offices: Milpitas, San Mateo and this one in Palo Alto at 4157 El Camino Way, Suite C. The other two offices are at 194 South Hillview Drive in Milpitas and 177 Bovet Road, Suite 180, in San Mateo. It is a specialist practice focused on straightening teeth and correcting bite and jaw alignment for children, teens and adults. The two orthodontists, Dr. Kathy Lee and Dr. Shaun Woo, both trained at the University of California, San Francisco.
The Palo Alto office is in the southern part of the city. Our South Palo Alto guide covers the surrounding neighborhoods, shops and parks.
The orthodontists
- Dr. Kathy Lee earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery, Master of Science and Certificate in Orthodontics at UCSF. The practice says she grew up in Taiwan and is fluent in Taiwanese and Mandarin.
- Dr. Shaun Woo earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees at the University of Alberta. He then completed a Master of Science and a Certificate in Orthodontics at UCSF.
The website also has a meet the team page and an office tour. The practice invites families to schedule a visit or stop by for a tour of the facility to meet the staff and see the treatment areas.
Treatments offered
The practice's website covers treatment for both children and adults. For adults, it lists these types of braces:
- Traditional metal braces
- Clear and ceramic braces
- Self-ligating braces
- Lingual braces, placed behind the teeth
- Invisible braces, including Invisalign
The adult section notes the American Association of Orthodontists figure that one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. It explains that adult jawbones have stopped growing, which is why some adult cases combine braces with orthognathic surgery to align the jaws. It also mentions that gum or bone loss and worn or shifted teeth can affect an adult's treatment plan.
Other sections cover two-phase treatment for younger children, palatal expanders and other appliances and surgical orthodontics. The practice also uses the iTero digital impression system, which takes a digital scan of the teeth.
On timing for children, the practice notes that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic visit around age seven. The practice's site lists signs parents may notice and invites them to schedule an evaluation. Only an orthodontist can say whether a child needs treatment and when. This listing is not medical or dental advice.
Your first visit
Lee & Woo says the first visit is complimentary, offered as a courtesy to your dentist and the community. At that appointment the team will:
- Review your dental and medical history.
- Complete an orthodontic examination.
- Discuss the general status of the teeth and jaws and any issues that may need treatment.
- Go over diagnostic and treatment fees.
The practice says its goal is to give you as much information as possible before any diagnostic records are taken. Patient forms can be filled out ahead of time from the website.
Cost, insurance and payment
The practice does not publish fees. It says cost depends on how much treatment a patient needs and a treatment coordinator explains the proposed costs and payment options. The coordinator also helps with dental insurance, including working out your coverage and filing claims. Flexible Spending Accounts and Health Savings Accounts are accepted, so mention yours at the consultation.
