About Osteria

Osteria is a traditional Italian restaurant at 247 Hamilton Avenue, at the corner of Ramona Street in downtown Palo Alto. Its website, which calls the restaurant Osteria and uses the name Osteria Toscana in its web address, focuses on Tuscan cooking. The restaurant says it was created in Palo Alto and sums up its goal in two words: "Culinary Contentment."

In its own description, Osteria aims for quality every time you eat there, with food that is fresh, healthy and built on whole ingredients. It calls its Tuscan cuisine both traditional and progressive. OpenTable lists the restaurant under Italian, contemporary Italian and European cuisine and describes the dining style as elegant casual.

What to expect from a Tuscan osteria

An osteria in Italy is a modest, neighborhood place to eat and drink, usually simpler than a formal ristorante. Tuscan cooking is known for olive oil, beans, bread, grilled meats and seasonal vegetables, with short ingredient lists and an emphasis on quality. Osteria in Palo Alto describes its menu in the same spirit, with a focus on fresh, whole food.

The restaurant does not publish a full menu in a form we could verify for this listing, so we have not named specific dishes. Ask about daily specials when you sit down. Check the restaurant's website or OpenTable page for the current menu before you go. OpenTable notes gluten-free options among the restaurant's features, which helps if you avoid wheat in a pasta-heavy cuisine.

How an Italian meal is structured

Italian menus usually follow a sequence of courses. Antipasti are starters such as cured meats, cheeses or vegetables. Primi are first courses, typically pasta, risotto or soup. Secondi are the main meat or fish dishes. Contorni are vegetable sides ordered separately. Nobody expects you to order every course. Sharing a couple of antipasti and then choosing a pasta or a main per person is a common way to eat. At lunch, a single primo with a salad makes a lighter meal before getting back to work.

Who it suits

With lunch and dinner service, a casual dress code and patio seating, Osteria works for a business lunch near the downtown offices, a dinner with visiting family or a relaxed evening before a movie on University Avenue. Groups can arrange gatherings by phone.

The room and the patio

Osteria sits on a corner of the Ramona Street area, a few steps from the Spanish Colonial Revival buildings of the Ramona Street Architectural District. According to its OpenTable listing, the restaurant has patio and outdoor seating, wheelchair access and a casual dress code. Beer and wine are served. Ask for a patio table on a warm evening if you want to eat outside.

Reservations, takeout and delivery

Reservations go through OpenTable, which showed bookable tables when we checked in October 2026. You can also phone the restaurant. Osteria offers takeout and delivery, which OpenTable says are ordered directly through the restaurant. Its website also mentions delivery for businesses and says the staff can help with gatherings of family, friends, coworkers or clients, so call to discuss a group lunch or a private event.

Hours

Osteria serves lunch and dinner, but the published hours differ between sources. The restaurant's website lists lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Its OpenTable listing shows weekday lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., weekend lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner every day from 5 to 9 p.m. Because the two sources disagree, call ahead before a late dinner or a weekend lunch.
