About DUXIANA Palo Alto
DUXIANA is the retail arm of DUX, the Swedish bed maker. Its Palo Alto showroom is at 534 Bryant Street in downtown, a block off University Avenue. The brand's store locator lists the store with a direct phone number and weekly hours. It also notes that the DUXIANA store in San Rafael has closed and points shoppers to the Palo Alto and San Francisco stores instead.
The company traces its start to 1926 in Malmö, Sweden, where Efraim Ljung began producing innerspring mattresses. DUX says four generations of the Ljung family later it has become a global brand with 88 stores worldwide. It is marking 100 years of craftsmanship and design with a year of celebrations around the anniversary.
How the DUX bed works
The DUX bed is the reason to visit. The brand describes the latest generation as a customizable, component-based sleep system made with natural materials. The key idea is that the bed is built from parts that can be replaced or upgraded. According to DUX, that means the bed can be restored as parts show wear and improved over the years as new accessories are released. The company says it designs its beds to last a lifetime.
The DUX website has a section on its Pascal customizable support system, along with pages on sleep science, innovation and back pain relief. These are the brand's own descriptions of its product. They are worth reading before a visit so you know which options to ask about. A showroom visit lets you compare firmness settings and configurations in person, which is hard to judge online.
Materials and sustainability
DUX says it chooses premium materials with the planet in mind. It lists slow-growth timber, responsibly sourced metals and certified natural textiles among them. The brand presents the replaceable design as part of its sustainability case, since a bed that can be repaired does not need to be thrown away. DUX also lists hotels that use its beds. It has a partnership with SAS, the Scandinavian airline, which it names as an official comfort partner for its lounges and flights.
Who it suits
A DUX bed is a premium, long-term purchase rather than a quick mattress swap. The showroom suits shoppers who want to invest in one bed and keep it for many years. It also suits people who like the idea of replacing worn parts instead of the whole bed. Shoppers who mainly want a budget mattress delivered fast will find more choice elsewhere. The brand's website calls its range DUX beds and furniture, so ask what bedding, headboards and other pieces the Palo Alto showroom has on display if you want a matching set. Prices are not listed for the store, so request a quote for the configuration you like.
Visiting the showroom
The store locator gives hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with the store closed on Sundays. Note the early closing time compared with many downtown shops. Plan a weekday or Saturday visit. A bed purchase is a big decision, so allow enough time to lie on more than one configuration. Bring your partner if you share a bed, so you can both try the options you are considering.
Call 650-322-7134 before you go if you want to ask about delivery, set-up or how to change components later. The brand's website also has a contact page for general questions.
