Palo Alto can feel hard to break into. People work long hours, many move here for a job or a degree and the social calendar often runs through school or the office. The fix is simple: join something that meets every week or every month. The city library runs free book clubs. Two Toastmasters clubs meet on Tuesdays. Hiking groups head into the hills every Saturday. A quiz club, a chess club and newcomer groups round it out.
This guide lists clubs and recurring meetups we confirmed in October 2026, with the dates and times their organizers posted. Volunteer-run groups change their schedules often, so check each one before your first visit.

Book clubs at the library
The Palo Alto City Library hosts several free book groups. Its events calendar lists these for late 2026 and early 2027:
- Pageturners. Second Thursdays, 6:30 to 7:45 p.m., at Rinconada Library. It reads widely, from fiction to biography to Malcolm Harris's history "Palo Alto." November 12 is Ian McEwan's "What We Can Know." December 10 is Michael Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay." On January 14, 2027, local author Raj Oza joins to discuss "Double Play on the Red Line."
- Graphic Novel Book Club. Second Thursdays, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Mitchell Park Library. For readers 16 and up, with titles chosen by the group.
- Brown Bag Book Club. Second Tuesdays at noon on Zoom. Register to get the link. It reads fiction and nonfiction, often tied to a heritage month.
- Philosophy for Life. A reading and discussion group on Sunday afternoons, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., at Rinconada Library, with sessions on November 1 and 15 and December 6 and 20.
- Short Story Social. A monthly evening for people who like the idea of a book club but not a whole novel, with sessions on January 28, February 25 and March 25, 2027.
Our libraries guide covers each branch. In Mountain View, Red Rock Coffee on Castro Street lists a book club on the first Sunday of the month from 3 to 5 p.m.
Toastmasters
Two Toastmasters clubs meet in Palo Alto. Both are listed by Toastmasters International as open to all interested people.
- Early Risers. Tuesdays at 6:30 a.m. at Unity Palo Alto, 3391 Middlefield Road. Online attendance is allowed.
- Palo Alto Toastmasters. Tuesdays at 12:05 p.m., a lunchtime club chartered in 2000. It meets in a hybrid format on Middlefield Road and asks you to contact it for the room.
Toastmasters clubs generally let guests watch a meeting before joining. Meetings follow a set pattern of prepared speeches, short impromptu talks and friendly evaluations, so you can sit and listen the first time. Some local employers, Palo Alto Networks among them, host clubs of their own for staff, so ask at work too.
Hiking groups
The Sierra Club's Loma Prieta Chapter covers the Peninsula and South Bay and runs several hiking sections.
- Black Mountain Hiking Section. It serves northern Santa Clara and San Mateo counties and sponsors several hikes each month, mostly day hikes. It says its hikes are open to the public and you do not need to be a Sierra Club member.
- Day Hiking Section. Leads a hike every Saturday, rain or shine, in Bay Area state parks and preserves, from Big Basin to Mount Diablo.
Schedules are on the Loma Prieta outings page. For routes to try on your own, see our hiking guide.

Running and walking groups
Palo Alto's flat bay trails are made for group runs. Two things to know:
- parkrun. The free, timed, weekly 5K known as parkrun used to run at Byxbee Park. Its Byxbee page now says the event no longer takes place and has been replaced by a Baylands Nature Preserve parkrun. Check parkrun's site for the start point and time. Register once for a free barcode.
- Baylands Frontrunners. This LGBTQ+ running and walking club advertises a Saturday 9 a.m. fun run and walk from the Baylands Athletic Center lot at 2499 Geng Road. We saw this only on event listing sites, so confirm with the club first.
Our running routes guide covers the Baylands, the Dish and more.
Chess, trivia and games
Bay Area Chess runs a coached drop-in club on Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room of the Unitarian Universalist Church at 505 East Charleston Road. Its Thursday evening session returns February 25, 2027. The volunteer-run Bay Area Quiz Club holds a free four-hour quiz at Mitchell Park Library on the second Sunday of most months, with the next sessions on December 13 and January 10. See board games and chess and trivia nights for details.
Cyclists have an active club scene, with weekend rides from California Avenue and long climbs into the hills. Our cycling clubs guide covers them.
Newcomer and life-stage groups
The Los Altos and Los Altos Hills Newcomers Club was founded in 1953 and posted a busy 2026 calendar of outings, dinners and interest groups such as writing. Local reporting in 2021 said it accepts residents who have moved recently or are going through a life change such as retirement, plus some members from nearby towns. Ask about eligibility if you live in Palo Alto. Its book club was on hiatus in October 2026.
Older adults can find classes, walks and social programs through Avenidas. See our guide to resources for older adults.
Finding more groups
A few sources turn up most of what meets in town. The library's online events calendar lists every book group, craft circle and game day across its branches. The city's seasonal Enjoy! catalog includes adult classes in art, dance and fitness that often turn into friendships, with winter 2027 sign-up opening December 3 for residents. Stanford's public lectures and concerts draw a regular crowd as well. Our guide to finding campus events explains where to look. Volunteering is another reliable way in, since the same people show up shift after shift.
Tips for joining
- Go three times. The first visit is awkward for everyone. By the third, people know your name.
- Pick a fixed slot. A club that meets at the same time every week is easier to keep than one with shifting dates.
- Volunteer to help. Small clubs always need someone to bring snacks, keep time or lead a hike.
- Mix online and offline. Meetup and neighborhood lists help you find groups, but the friendships happen in person.
Good to know
- Library programs are free. Some, such as the Brown Bag Book Club, ask you to register.
- Volunteer-run groups cancel sessions without much notice. The quiz club canceled its November 8, 2026 meeting.
- In town for a few months on assignment? Compare extended-stay hotels close to the library branches.
