Bain & Company is one of the three biggest management consulting firms in the world, along with McKinsey and the Boston Consulting Group. It is headquartered in Boston. Its Silicon Valley office sits in downtown Palo Alto at 525 University Avenue, a few blocks from the Caltrain station. Bain says the office is a focal point for its technology work worldwide.
This profile explains what the Palo Alto office does, how the firm began, how it differs from Bain Capital and what visitors and job seekers should know. For the setting, see our guide to downtown Palo Alto.
The Silicon Valley office
Bain lists its Silicon Valley office at 525 University Avenue, Suite 23, Palo Alto, California 94301. The firm's office page says it has operated here for more than 15 years. In that time, it says, the office has deepened Bain's Bay Area presence and served as a focal point for its global technology initiative.
Bain describes the office's clients as a mix of fast growing tech startups, established firms, buyouts, venture groups and Fortune 500 companies in other industries. Consultants here work on strategy, mergers, pricing, operations and technology projects. Like most consulting offices, its staff spend much of their time at client sites around the Bay Area and beyond.
The office works closely with Bain's San Francisco office. Bain says the two offices volunteer each year with local nonprofits in the cities and neighborhoods where their people live.
How Bain began
Bill Bain founded the firm in 1973 with colleagues from the Boston Consulting Group, where he had been a group vice president. Patrick F. Graham was among the co-founders. According to Wikipedia, the firm started in Bain's apartment in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston. Within weeks it was working with several former BCG clients.
The firm grew fast through word of mouth among chief executives and boards. It opened its first European office in London in 1979 and was incorporated in 1985. By 1987, Wikipedia says, it had about 800 staff and was one of the four largest strategy specialist firms.
The late 1980s and early 1990s were harder. Mitt Romney and Orit Gadiesh are credited with returning the firm to growth in their roles as chief executive and chairman. In the 2000s the firm built large practices serving private equity firms, technology companies and nonprofits. Wikipedia reports revenue of $7.5 billion and about 22,000 employees in 2025, across 64 locations. Christophe De Vusser is global managing partner and Orit Gadiesh is chairman.
What the work looks like
Bain's industry list runs from aerospace and defense to utilities and renewables, with technology and telecommunications among its largest areas. In Silicon Valley the technology side naturally dominates. Projects might include a growth strategy for a software company, a pricing review, a merger plan or an operations overhaul.
Private equity is the other big piece. Since the 2000s Bain has built a large practice advising buyout firms, often studying a company quickly before an investor decides to buy it. Venture and growth investors use similar work. That makes a Palo Alto office useful, since many of those investors are based on the Peninsula.
Consultants work in small teams led by partners, usually for weeks or months at a time. Much of the work happens at the client's offices, so the University Avenue suite is a home base rather than the place where every project runs.
Bain & Company is not Bain Capital
The names confuse many people in Palo Alto, because both firms are active here. Bain Capital began inside Bain & Company. Bill Bain spun off the investment business in 1984 and appointed Mitt Romney as its first chief executive. Since then the two have been separate firms.

A consulting office on University Avenue
A strategy firm on University Avenue is a sign of how downtown has changed. When the Varsity Theatre opened at 456 University in 1927, the street served a small college town. Since the 1990s it has filled with startup offices, venture firms and the services that support them. Our page on University Avenue's tech history traces that shift, from early web companies to the Google office that opened at 165 University in February 1999.
The 500 block puts Bain close to its clients and to the people it hires. Venture firms, law offices and startups fill nearby buildings. Stanford's Graduate School of Business is a short ride away. For consulting firms, being near both the companies that buy advice and the investors who back them is the point.
Bain and Stanford
Consulting firms recruit heavily at business schools. The Stanford Graduate School of Business is one of the most closely watched. Its campus, the Knight Management Center, is about two miles from the Palo Alto office. Bain also hires undergraduates and specialists in fields such as data science and engineering. We found no formal Stanford partnership on the firm's office page. The connection is recruiting and the flow of graduates into the local economy.
Careers
Bain's office page links to open roles in the Silicon Valley office, upcoming recruiting events and internships. Typical entry points are associate consultant roles for new college graduates and consultant roles for MBA graduates. The firm also hires experienced professionals and expert roles in areas such as machine learning engineering.
