Weddings around Palo Alto range from Stanford's Memorial Church to vineyard estates in the hills and courthouse ceremonies with a lunch on University Avenue. Add galas, prom season and black tie dinners and the town has steady demand for formal clothes. Yet there is no bridal salon inside city limits. Brides shopping for a gown head south to Los Gatos or north to San Francisco. Almost everything else is close by: suits and made to measure tailoring, department store eveningwear, engagement rings, alterations and invitations.

This guide is organized by what you need to buy. We confirmed each store on its own website, its brand's store page or a verified listing in our directory in October 2026. Appointments matter in this category more than any other, so book ahead for every fitting.

Wedding gowns

The closest bridal salon we could confirm is Lovely Bride Los Gatos at 104 University Avenue in downtown Los Gatos, about 25 minutes south of Palo Alto on Highway 85 or Interstate 280. It works by appointment. Its website is unusually open about price: gowns range from $2,000 to $5,000, with most between $2,500 and $4,000. Brides can register online to browse dresses and prices before visiting. Designers listed include SAINT, Renhue, Dany Tabet, Rue De Seine, Jenny Yoo, Watters and Moira Hughes.

The store posts hours of 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. It also lists sales events, including one from November 6 to 8, 2026. Make a day of it with our Los Gatos guide.

For a wider search, San Francisco has the region's largest group of bridal salons. Most gowns take several months to order and arrive, then need alterations, so start shopping eight to twelve months before the wedding if you can.

Suits, tuxedos and made to measure

Stanford Shopping Center is the main destination for formal menswear. Several stores offer custom or made to measure tailoring:

  • ZEGNA: the Italian house's boutique sells ready-to-wear plus Su Misura made to measure.
  • Brooks Brothers: tailored clothing for men, women and boys, with made to measure.
  • Wilkes Bashford: the Bay Area luxury clothier's 25,000 square foot flagship, opened in November 2024, with designer fashion and in-house alterations.
  • J.Crew: a men's suiting department for a simpler, ready-to-wear option.
  • Macy's: men's suits and suit separates on Floors 1 and 3, with alterations on Floor 2.

Made to measure takes weeks, not days. Ask the store for its current timeline before you set a fitting date. Our menswear guide covers the rest of the city's men's stores.

Tuxedo rental

For a rental, the closest stores are both outside Palo Alto. Men's Wearhouse has a store at 804 West El Camino Real in Sunnyvale and another at 1960 South El Camino Real in San Mateo. Both list tuxedo rentals, tailoring and alterations, with hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. For a wedding party, book group fittings early and ask about deadlines for out-of-town groomsmen to send measurements. See the Sunnyvale store page for details.

Gowns and eveningwear for guests

For mothers of the couple, bridesmaids and guests, the department stores at Stanford Shopping Center are the most efficient stop. Nordstrom offers alterations and Style Help. Bloomingdale's has stylists and tailoring. Neiman Marcus offers personal shopping and alterations. Macy's lists women's dresses on Floors 1 and 2 and a free personal stylist. Booking a stylist for an hour can save a day of browsing, since they pull options in your size ahead of time. Our womenswear guide lists the boutiques in town.

Alterations

The Tailor Maid is an alterations shop upstairs at Stanford Shopping Center. It handles everyday fixes, bridal and formal wear, restyling and custom clothing. It lists a standard turnaround of 48 hours, express service for a 20% surcharge and in-home fittings for an extra 20%. A full bridal alteration takes multiple fittings, so plan to start about two months before the wedding. Our dry cleaning and tailoring guide lists other tailors around town.

Engagement rings and wedding bands

Stanford Shopping Center has the city's main cluster of jewelers. Brilliant Earth runs an appointment-first showroom for engagement rings, wedding bands and fine jewelry, with loose diamonds and gems shown by appointment only. Shreve & Co., founded in San Francisco in 1852, sells fine jewelry and bridal pieces and offers custom design, engraving and appraisals. Tiffany & Co. offers engraving and ring consultations, bookable online. For a vintage ring, Gleim the Jeweler is known for estate jewelry. Our jewelry and watches guide compares them in detail.

Invitations and stationery

Paper Source at Town & Country Village sells custom invitations and announcements for weddings and showers, with appointments bookable online. In Los Altos, Paperwhirl at 165 Main Street has offered custom stationery and invitations since 1979. Its website lists hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Order invitations about four months ahead to leave time for proofs, printing and mailing. Our stationery guide covers both stores.

Prom, galas and black tie

Not every formal outfit is for a wedding. Spring brings prom season at Palo Alto and Gunn high schools. Winter brings holiday parties and the Stanford Viennese Ball, held on February 19, 2027 at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. For teens, a tuxedo rental from Men's Wearhouse or a dress from a department store keeps costs in check. Give alterations at least two weeks, since spring is busy for tailors.

For shoes, bags and finishing touches, our shoes and accessories guide lists stores around town. Department stores also carry formal shoes, ties and cufflinks, which saves a second trip. If you are renting, check whether shoes, shirt and tie come with the package or cost extra.
