Handwritten notes never quite went out of style in Palo Alto. Thank-you cards still follow job interviews, wedding invitations still arrive by mail and students still fill notebooks in every cafe near campus. The city's stationery shopping is small but focused. One national paper store covers cards, wrap and invitations in town. A Los Altos boutique has sold fine paper since 1979. For Japanese pens, planners and notebooks, the best shops are a 25-minute drive south in San Jose.
This guide covers each option and what it does best. We confirmed every store on its own website, its parent company's store page or a verified listing in our directory in October 2026.

Japanese stationery in San Jose
Japanese pens, notebooks and planners have a devoted following in Silicon Valley. The closest specialty shops are run by Kinokuniya, the Japanese bookstore company.
Mai Do at Santana Row
Mai Do Fine Stationery & Gifts has a shop at 378 Santana Row, Suite 1125, in San Jose. Kinokuniya's store list gives hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Kinokuniya's online stationery range gives a sense of what to expect: Hobonichi planners, masking tapes, stamps, stickers and cards and letter sets. Santana Row is an open-air shopping street off Stevens Creek Boulevard, so you can make an afternoon of it.
Kinokuniya at Mitsuwa Marketplace
Kinokuniya's San Jose bookstore is inside Mitsuwa Marketplace at 675 Saratoga Avenue. The company lists daily hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is primarily a bookstore for Japanese books and magazines, but the Japanese supermarket and food court in the same building make it a popular weekend trip. Call ahead if you need a specific planner or notebook.
If you are heading to San Francisco, Mai Do runs two more shops in the Kinokuniya Building at Japan Center, 1581 Webster Street, open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can book a San Francisco walking tour to see more of the neighborhood. Our San Jose day trip guide covers the South Bay.
Pens, ink and paper for writing
For trying pens before you buy, Blick Art Materials' San Jose store at 3430 Stevens Creek Boulevard opened in early 2026 with a fine writing area for testing pens and inks from newer brands. It is a few minutes from Santana Row along Stevens Creek Boulevard, so Blick and Mai Do fit into one trip. Our art supplies guide covers Blick in detail.
Closer to home, Miniso on University Avenue lists stationery among its ten product categories, with inexpensive notebooks and pens that appeal to students and character fans. For paper by the ream or packaging for shipping, Kelly Spicers on Middlefield Road sells paper and packaging on weekdays.
Holiday cards and seasonal stationery
The busiest stretch for stationery shops runs from early November to mid-December. Photo cards, boxed holiday cards, gift wrap, tags and advent calendars all move quickly. If you plan to send printed photo cards, take your photos in October and order by Thanksgiving, which falls on November 26 in 2026. That leaves time for proofs, printing and addressing before the mail slows down in December.
Shop in person if you want to feel paper weight and see true colors. Paper Source's Holiday Open House from November 6 to 8 is a good moment to browse the season's designs. Paperwhirl's custom stationery service suits anyone who wants a more personal printed card. For gift wrap, Paper Source is the closest stop in town. Our holiday shopping guide covers the rest of the season.
Tips for buying stationery
- Order printed pieces early. Custom invitations and holiday cards need time for proofs and printing. Start at least six to eight weeks ahead for holidays.
- Match pen to paper. Fountain pens and gel inks can bleed through thin paper. Test on a sample sheet in the store.
- Check postage. Square envelopes, heavy cards and wax seals can need extra postage. Take one finished invitation to the post office to weigh it.
- Shop early for planners. Next year's planners usually arrive in late summer or fall.
- Keep a stock of cards. A small box of blank notecards covers thank-yous, sympathy notes and birthdays.
