Most of the Bay Area pushes visitors into a rental car. Palo Alto does not. The town grew up around a railroad station, Stanford runs a free shuttle that anyone can ride and the downtown streets are flat, short and full of places to eat. The electric Caltrain reaches San Francisco and San Jose without a single freeway. A car mainly helps for the foothill preserves, the coast and Filoli.

This guide covers how to arrive without a car, how each local option works and which hotels make car-free travel easy. It ends with a sample two-day plan. All fares are from official pages in October 2026.

Arriving without a car

  • From SFO. AirTrain to BART, BART to Millbrae, then Caltrain south. Plan on about 60 to 90 minutes. A southbound train from Millbrae takes about 20 to 30 minutes to Palo Alto. Our SFO guide covers the Millbrae transfer and late-night options.
  • From San Jose airport. The VTA Route 60 bus is free from the terminals to Santa Clara Transit Center, where you catch Caltrain north. See our SJC guide.
  • From San Francisco. Caltrain from Fourth and King takes about 40 minutes on a weekday express. It is a three-zone trip, $8.50 in October 2026 and $9.00 from January 1, 2027.

Caltrain: your backbone

Palo Alto has two everyday stations, both in Zone 3 and both wheelchair accessible. Palo Alto station at 95 University Avenue sits at the foot of downtown and every weekday train stops there, including expresses. California Avenue station, one stop south, serves the Midtown restaurants and the Sunday farmers market. Weekday express trains skip it. Stanford's stadium platform opens only for select events and stayed closed for the 2026 football season.

A one-zone ride, such as Palo Alto to Mountain View or Menlo Park, cost $4.00 for an adult in October 2026. Pay with a Clipper card, a contactless bank card or a phone wallet. Since January 1, 2026, all three pay the same fare. Tap the platform validator before you board and again when you get off. Weekend trains are all locals and run about every 30 minutes. A regional transit funding measure is on the November 2026 ballot and Caltrain has warned of cuts if it fails, so check the Caltrain site close to your trip. Our Caltrain guide has the full fare table.

The free Marguerite shuttle

Stanford's Marguerite shuttle is free and open to everyone. No Stanford ID or ticket is needed. The main lines run Monday to Friday, except university holidays, from the Palo Alto Transit Center next to the train station. Line P climbs Palm Drive to the Oval in front of the Main Quad, with departures averaging every 15 minutes on weekdays. Lines X and Y loop around campus. Every bus is wheelchair accessible and carries bikes on the front rack.

On weekends only the Shopping Express runs. It also runs on Fridays from 3 p.m. and links the transit center and campus with San Antonio Shopping Center in Mountain View. Track buses live in the ETA Transit app under Stanford Marguerite.

Buses and rides

VTA runs two routes along El Camino Real: the local 22 and the limited-stop Rapid 522. A single adult ride was $2.50 in October 2026. They are handy for Town & Country Village, Stanford Shopping Center and the hotels on south El Camino. SamTrans buses head north toward Menlo Park and Redwood City from the same transit center. See our guide to VTA buses and shuttles.

The city's on-demand Palo Alto Link shuttle ended on October 30, 2026. For the Baylands, the Dish or the Computer History Museum, use Uber, Lyft or a Waymo. Waymo's Peninsula service area includes Palo Alto. Our rideshare guide explains how each works.

Bikes and bike rentals

Palo Alto has no bike share program, so plan ahead. The Bike Connection at 2011 El Camino Real rents bikes for exploring the city and nearby trails and takes reservations on its website. Hotel Keen advertises complimentary bike rental for guests, so ask at check-in. You can also bring your own bike on Caltrain for free. Electric trains have two bike cars with room for 36 bikes each.

Once you have a bike, the city is easy. Bryant Street, the Ellen Fletcher Bicycle Boulevard, runs north to south through central Palo Alto with light traffic. Our biking guide covers the Bay Trail, the Bol Park path and the Highway 101 bike bridge. Riders under 18 must wear a helmet and bikes are banned on the Dish.

Hotels near the stations

Pick a hotel within walking distance of a station and you will rarely miss the car. Near Palo Alto station:

  • Hotel Keen, 425 High Street, a block from University Avenue, with breakfast included.
  • Cardinal Hotel, 235 Hamilton Avenue, a 1924 hotel with some shared-bath rooms for less.
  • Nobu Hotel Palo Alto at 180 Hamilton Avenue or el Prado at 520 Cowper Street for a splurge.
  • The Clement, the Westin and the Sheraton, side by side on El Camino Real at the foot of Palm Drive.

For lower rates, look one stop south. Hyatt Centric Mountain View at 409 San Antonio Road is a couple of blocks from San Antonio station. Car-free stays also save the nightly parking fee many downtown hotels charge. Compare hotels near Palo Alto station before you book.

When a car still helps

Be honest about what transit cannot reach. Foothills Nature Preserve sits high on Page Mill Road with no bus service. The Midpeninsula preserves on Skyline Boulevard, the coast at Half Moon Bay and Filoli in Woodside all need wheels. So do late returns from San Francisco after the last convenient train. Two good fixes:

  • Rent for one day only. Pick up near your hotel on the morning you head for the hills or the coast, then return it that evening. You skip several nights of hotel parking.
  • Ride there, ride back. A rideshare to a trailhead works on the way up, but phone signal and pickups are poor in the hills. Arrange the return before you start walking or choose a closer preserve such as Pearson-Arastradero.

The Dish is a middle case. Its main gate at Stanford Avenue and Junipero Serra Boulevard is roughly 2.5 miles from downtown, an easy bike ride or a short rideshare.

A two-day car-free plan

  1. Day 1 morning. Walk to El Palo Alto, then ride Marguerite Line P to the Main Quad and the free Cantor Arts Center.
  2. Day 1 afternoon. Walk back down Palm Drive, then through Professorville to the HP Garage and Gamble Garden.
  3. Day 1 evening. Dinner downtown and a film at the Stanford Theatre.
  4. Day 2 morning. Rent a bike, ride the Bryant Street boulevard south, then follow Embarcadero Road east to the Baylands.
  5. Day 2 afternoon. Return the bike, then ride Caltrain north to San Francisco. You can book a city tour that starts near the waterfront.
