Visitors sometimes expect a Greyhound depot in a city of Palo Alto's profile. There is none. Long-distance coaches skip the mid-Peninsula and stop in the bigger hubs at each end instead. That is less of a problem than it sounds, because each of those hubs sits on a fast rail line into Palo Alto. A coach to San Jose plus a 20 minute train ride is a perfectly good way to arrive.
This page explains where the intercity buses actually stop and how to make the last connection. We checked the operators' own sites in late October 2026. Service changes often, so always confirm on your ticket. For every other way in, see getting to Palo Alto.
The short answer
| Service | Stops in Palo Alto? | Nearest useful stop |
|---|---|---|
| Greyhound | No stop listed | San Jose Diridon Station |
| FlixBus | No stop listed | San Jose Diridon Station |
| Amtrak Thruway | No stop listed | San Jose Diridon (Route 21) |
| Dumbarton Express | Yes, weekdays | Palo Alto Transit Center and Stanford |
| SamTrans 397 (overnight) | Yes | Palo Alto Transit Center |
The last two are regional commuter buses rather than long-distance coaches. They matter because they are the only buses from outside the Peninsula that come all the way into town.
Greyhound and FlixBus at San Jose Diridon
Greyhound and FlixBus belong to the same company and share a stop in San Jose. Both list San Jose Diridon Station at 65 Cahill Street. Their pages say buses board at Amtrak stall 3 inside the San Jose Diridon bus terminal and list ticketing hours of 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. daily. Both add a warning that the ticket holds the most current address, so read it before you travel. See the Greyhound Diridon page or the FlixBus Diridon page.
Neither page lists Palo Alto among the nearby stops. The closest others they show are Hayward and Tracy, then the San Francisco and Oakland stops. That fits what we found: no coach stop in Palo Alto itself.
Finishing the trip by Caltrain
Diridon is also the main Caltrain station in San Jose, so the transfer is a walk across the station. Take a northbound train to Palo Alto. On the late October 2026 weekday timetable, express trains took about 21 minutes and limited or local trains about 27. It is a two zone trip, $6.25 for an adult in October 2026 and $6.50 from January 1, 2027. Tap a Clipper card or a contactless bank card on the platform validator. Our San Jose guide covers this leg in detail.
Late coaches are the risk. If your bus is due near midnight, compare it with the last Caltrain and keep a rideshare app ready as a backup.
Arriving in San Francisco or the East Bay
Coaches from the north and east often terminate in San Francisco or Oakland. Greyhound lists San Francisco stops at 5th and Townsend and at the San Francisco bus station. The 5th and Townsend stop is a short walk from Caltrain's San Francisco terminal at Fourth and King, where trains leave for Palo Alto. That makes it the handiest drop-off for a Palo Alto trip.
FlixBus and Greyhound also list East Bay stops such as West Oakland BART and Crescent Lawn at UC Berkeley. From either, ride BART to Millbrae and change to Caltrain. Our guides to getting here from San Francisco and from the East Bay explain both routes.

Amtrak Thruway
Amtrak runs connecting Thruway buses where its trains do not go. None is listed for Palo Alto. At San Jose Diridon, the Capitol Corridor station page lists Thruway Route 21 running between San Jose, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. The same page lists Capitol Corridor trains, the Coast Starlight, ACE trains east to Stockton and Caltrain north to San Francisco. It shows the station as staffed, with a station agent on weekdays from 9:15 a.m. to 8:45 p.m.
Thruway buses are generally sold as part of an Amtrak trip rather than as stand-alone bus rides, so book through Amtrak. Once at Diridon, the Caltrain connection to Palo Alto works the same way as for Greyhound.
Regional buses that do reach Palo Alto
Dumbarton Express
The Dumbarton Express is the only bus that crosses the bay straight to Palo Alto. It starts at Union City BART and runs over the Dumbarton Bridge on two lines. DB serves downtown Palo Alto, the Caltrain station, Stanford Hospital and the campus. DB1 serves Stanford Research Park and the VA hospital. The operator lists weekday service only, roughly 5:30 a.m. to 8:45 p.m., paid with Clipper. Details are on the Dumbarton Express site.
SamTrans Route 397
SamTrans 397 is a limited overnight route from San Francisco through SFO to the Palo Alto Transit Center. It is slow, but it runs when the trains do not. SamTrans listed an adult fare of $2.25 in cash or $2.05 on Clipper in October 2026. Our SFO guide describes where it stops at the airport.
From Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz METRO runs the Highway 17 Express between Santa Cruz and San Jose, where you can change to Caltrain. It is also an Amtrak Thruway route and honors Amtrak through tickets. Check scmtd.com for the current schedule and stops. Our Santa Cruz day trip covers the drive the other way and our Santa Cruz and Monterey guide covers the trip from the coast.
Arriving late at night
Many long-distance coaches are scheduled to arrive in the evening or overnight. That is when the last leg gets harder. Caltrain runs less often late in the evening. The final trains of the night leave earlier than many visitors expect. Check the Caltrain schedule for the night you arrive and compare it with your coach's arrival time plus a margin for delays.
If the trains have stopped, you have three choices. From San Jose, VTA Route 22 runs late along El Camino Real to the Palo Alto Transit Center; check its timetable for the last trip. From San Francisco, the overnight SamTrans 397 covers the same need. Otherwise, a rideshare or taxi from Diridon to Palo Alto takes roughly half an hour without traffic. Our page on VTA buses lists the late night routes in more detail.
Booking tips
- Book to San Jose, not to "Palo Alto". If a ticket site offers a Palo Alto trip, read the stop address. It may be a stop in another city.
- Mind arrival times. Coaches run late in traffic. Leave room before the last train of the night.
- Carry a contactless card. It works on Caltrain, BART, VTA and SamTrans, so you do not need to buy a Clipper card on arrival.
- Compare with the train. From Sacramento or the Central Valley, Amtrak to San Jose plus Caltrain can be simpler than a coach. You can compare bus and train tickets across operators.
Good to know
- Caltrain one-way tickets are valid for four hours in one direction.
- Palo Alto station has 178 bike racks and BikeLink lockers, plus the bus plaza for VTA, SamTrans and the free Stanford Marguerite.
- Budget travelers should know that Palo Alto has no hostel. Our budget stays guide lists the cheaper options.
