A good date night in Palo Alto is less about grand dining rooms and more about small ones. The city's most romantic restaurants tend to be compact: a French bistro with a dozen tables near California Avenue, a tasting-menu room set apart from the bar, a heated patio off Bryant Street. Add a skylit rooftop garden at Stanford Shopping Center and an Italian dinner inside a barn built as a winery in the 1880s and you have plenty of ways to mark an occasion.

Every restaurant here was confirmed as operating in October 2026 through its own website or booking page. We picked rooms for atmosphere and pace as much as food. For a wider plan, our date night ideas page pairs dinner with films, concerts and walks.

For the big occasion

Protégé, 250 California Avenue

Protégé holds Palo Alto's only Michelin star. For a milestone, book the Dining Room, which serves a seven-course tasting menu in a smaller, quieter space than the bar-side Lounge. A beverage pairing is offered nightly and there is a tart trolley at the end. The largest party is four, so it suits two people well. Reservations open on Tock at midnight 30 days ahead and the restaurant handles questions by email, not phone. Children under 5 are not permitted in the Dining Room.

Ethel's Fancy, 550 Waverley Street

Chef-owner Scott Nishiyama built Ethel's Fancy around the dinner parties his mother hosted in Hawaii. The shared Californian plates with Japanese ingredients make for a relaxed, talkative dinner. It is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. Its OpenTable page lists dinner Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 9:30 p.m. and says some tables are held for walk-ins.

Zola, 585 Bryant Street

Zola is a market-driven French bistro listed in the MICHELIN Guide. Steak frites, escargots and duck confit set the tone. A fully covered, heated patio is a good choice on a cool night. For a private dinner, the Bar Lounge seats eight. An early bistro menu runs Monday through Thursday from 5 to 5:30 p.m. if you are heading to a show afterward.

Small and intimate

Bistro Elan, 2363A Birch Street

Bistro Elan is a small California French restaurant around the corner from California Avenue. Its home page says it has been a local favorite for almost 30 years. The Fall 2026 dinner menu runs to grilled matsutake mushrooms, oysters by the half dozen and seasonal mains. There is an open kitchen and a patio. Dinner runs Wednesday through Saturday, so plan around the early week.

La Boheme, 415 California Avenue

La Boheme has served Paris bistro classics on California Avenue since 2014, starting with escargots. Its wine list is named La Cave de Marie after Marie-Pierre, who helps guests pick a bottle. Dinner runs Tuesday through Saturday, with indoor and outdoor tables. Our California Avenue guide covers parking near both bistros.

Caffe Riace, 200 Sheridan Avenue

Caffe Riace is a family-owned Sicilian-style trattoria established in 1997. Its outdoor dining area, which it calls a private piazza, is the draw on a mild evening. There is also a dining room and a wine room. It serves lunch and dinner on weekdays and Saturdays.

Restaurants with a setting

Vina Enoteca, 700 Welch Road

Vina Enoteca occupies the Stanford Barn, which the restaurant says was built from 1886 to 1888 as a winery for nearby vineyards. Expect house-made pasta, pizza and a wine list focused on Italy. It is listed in the MICHELIN Guide and serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Book through Tock.

RH Rooftop Restaurant, Stanford Shopping Center

The RH Rooftop Restaurant sits on the top floor of the RH design gallery. The company describes a year-round skylit garden with heritage olive trees, chandeliers and a fountain carved from Biancone limestone. It works well for a daytime date, with a walk through the shopping center after.

Tamarine, 546 University Avenue

Tamarine has served modern Vietnamese food since 2002. Most dishes come family style, which makes sharing part of the evening. Happy hour runs at the bar from 5 to 6 p.m.

Low-key and daytime dates

Not every date needs a tasting menu. A long lunch can feel more relaxed than a dinner reservation and it is easier to book.

  • Evvia, 420 Emerson Street. The Greek restaurant's covered patio is quieter than tables near its open kitchen. Weekday lunch is easier to book than dinner. See our Greek food guide.
  • Ettan, 518 Bryant Street. The Cal-Indian restaurant serves weekend brunch and has a courtyard patio. It is listed in the MICHELIN Guide.
  • Tootsie's at the Stanford Barn. A small Italian cafe in the same brick barn as Vina Enoteca, serving pastries, panini and espresso on weekdays with indoor and outdoor seating.

A weekday lunch followed by a walk through the Stanford campus or the Rodin Sculpture Garden is one of the easiest good dates in town.

Drinks and dessert after

  • Sekoya, 417 California Avenue. A redwood-themed restaurant and lounge that says it was built for a cocktail at the bar or a late, intimate drink after dinner elsewhere.
  • BarZola, 585 Bryant Street. Cocktails and wine until 10:30 p.m. early in the week and 11:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
  • Dessert downtown. Salt & Straw on University Avenue scoops until 11 p.m. daily, per its website. The Palo Alto Creamery on Emerson Street makes old-fashioned sundaes and milkshakes.
  • A film. The Stanford Theatre shows classic movies on University Avenue, a short walk from the downtown restaurants.

Booking tips for a romantic dinner

  1. Name the occasion. Most booking systems have a notes field. Mention an anniversary or a proposal.
  2. Ask for the table you want. A corner, a booth or the patio. Online systems rarely let you choose, so add a note or call.
  3. Avoid the busiest nights. Stanford commencement in June and big football weekends fill dining rooms weeks ahead.
  4. Go early in the week. Tuesday and Wednesday are quieter, though Bistro Elan opens for dinner from Wednesday.
  5. Read the cancellation rules. Tasting menus often carry deposits or prepayment. Protégé forfeits them inside 48 hours.
  6. Make a night of it. If you are coming from out of town, book a hotel within walking distance so neither of you has to drive.

Good to know

  • Protégé, Vina Enoteca, La Boheme and Ethel's Fancy are closed for dinner on Sunday and Monday.
  • Neat casual dress works everywhere on this page.
  • Bring a layer for any patio table after sunset, even in summer.
