A beer garden needs space, sun and a relaxed attitude toward lingering over a pitcher. Palo Alto's expensive downtown has little room for the first. What the city lacks, the hills and the neighboring towns supply. A roadhouse that has served drinks since 1852 sits in Portola Valley, about a 15 minute drive from University Avenue. Mountain View and Redwood City each have a German biergarten. Several breweries up the Peninsula pour in big outdoor yards.
This guide starts with outdoor drinking in Palo Alto, then moves to the nearby towns, which we name as we go. Every place was confirmed through its own website or the current San Francisco Peninsula tourism office listing in late October or early November 2026. Hours are as posted and change often. Everyone who orders alcohol must be 21 or older with ID.

Outdoor drinking in Palo Alto
The Patio at 412 Emerson Street takes its name from its large outdoor seating area. It is a restaurant and sports bar with 21 TVs, a pub menu of burgers and tacos and what it calls the longest bar in Palo Alto. It opens every day at 11 a.m. and does not take reservations, so arrive early on a warm Friday. Wednesday trivia runs from 7 to 9 p.m.
Elsewhere downtown, the drinking is mostly on restaurant patios and the car-free blocks of Ramona Street and California Avenue. Our outdoor dining guide lists the best patios, many with a full bar. For a cocktail on a roof instead of a pint in a yard, the Graduate hotel's President's Terrace is the option downtown.
The Alpine Inn, Portola Valley
The Alpine Inn at 3915 Alpine Road is the area's classic beer garden. Its old nickname, Zott's, still names a burger and takeout kits on the menu. It began in 1852 as Casa de Tableta, a roadhouse built by Felix Buelna, a former San Jose mayor, after San Jose banned Sunday gambling. The inn calls itself the second-oldest continually operating tavern in California. The site was registered as California Historical Landmark No. 825 in May 1969 under its original name. After Prohibition, Enrico Rossotti took over and ran it into the 1950s, which is why the sign still reads Rossotti's Alpine Inn.
Three Portola Valley families bought the property in 2018 and reopened it in August 2019 after a restoration. The garden runs along Los Trancos Creek, with picnic tables under the trees and a covered, heated section for cool evenings. The menu is grill food built for a beer: the Alpine Smash Burger is listed at $10.95, Zott's Classic Burger with a half pound of Wagyu at $16.95 and a Wunderbar pretzel with beer cheese at $9.95.
- Hours. Tuesday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., as posted. Closed Monday.
- No reservations. The inn takes no reservations or private party requests, so sunny weekend afternoons fill fast.
- Getting there. It is about 5 miles from Stanford up Alpine Road and not served by Caltrain. The inn itself asks guests to carpool or use rideshare.
Our Portola Valley guide covers the town and the trails nearby, which make a good walk before lunch.

German biergartens
Ludwig's Biergarten, 383 Castro Street, Mountain View
Ludwig's sits on the corner of Castro and California streets in downtown Mountain View, about 6 miles from Palo Alto and a few blocks from the Mountain View Caltrain station. Owner Gisela took over after a career in tech. General manager Janina, who grew up in the beverage trade in southern Germany, curates the beer list. The kitchen serves German classics plus vegan and vegetarian options. There are German soft drinks, house cocktails and non-alcoholic beers too.
The posted hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday and 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with dinner served until about 8 or 9 p.m. depending on demand. It is closed Monday and closes from the afternoon of December 24 through December 31. Events in November 2026 include Headgames trivia on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., a ukulele sing-along and monthly German-language Stammtisch evenings. Tables are reserved in blocks of eight and parties larger than eight pay a 22 percent gratuity. Steins, the other Mountain View beer garden, has closed. Our Castro Street guide covers the rest of the strip.
Gourmet Haus Staudt, 2615 Broadway, Redwood City
Gourmet Haus Staudt is a German beer hall and garden with a shop selling European groceries. It is not a brewery, but its imported beer list is long and the kitchen serves German food. The biergarten lists hours of 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday, noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. on Friday and noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The shop keeps shorter hours. It now takes table bookings for groups of 10 or more. See our Redwood City guide for the rest of downtown.
Brewery beer gardens up the Peninsula
- Devil's Canyon Brewing, 935 Washington St., San Carlos. The brewery's beer garden, taproom and barrel room open to the public for Beer Friday, listed from 4 to 10 p.m., with live music and up to seven food trucks. It is dog friendly and pours a house root beer.
- Fieldwork Brewing, 3030 S. Delaware St., San Mateo. The tourism office describes a large outdoor beer garden in Bay Meadows with fire pits, flights and Detroit-style pizza, open daily from noon Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. on Sunday.
- Hapa's Brewing beer garden, 59 Barack Obama Blvd., San Jose. Farther afield, about 17 miles from Palo Alto. Closed Mondays.
Our breweries guide has full details on each taproom.
What to order in a beer garden
- A Helles or a Märzen. Light German lagers are the classic beer garden pour. Märzen, the amber Oktoberfest style, appears in fall.
- A Radler. Beer mixed with lemon soda, lower in alcohol and good on hot afternoons. German-style bars usually have one.
- A Hefeweizen. Cloudy wheat beer with banana and clove notes, served in a tall curved glass.
- Something to share. Soft pretzels, sausages and fries keep a long afternoon on track.
- A non-alcoholic beer. German breweries make some of the best. Ask what is in the fridge.
Seasons and weather
Palo Alto's dry season runs roughly May through October, the peak time for an afternoon outside. In November rain returns and evenings drop into the 40s. The Alpine Inn's heated section and Fieldwork's fire pits help, but bring a jacket. Ludwig's holds its Oktoberfest on the last Saturday in September, a day-long party with games and live music. December is quieter, with holiday closures at several places.
Drinking responsibly and getting home
A pitcher on a sunny afternoon goes down faster than it should, especially at the long, unhurried tables of a beer garden. Drink water between rounds and eat. Ludwig's, Gourmet Haus Staudt and Fieldwork are close to Caltrain stations, so the train is an easy ride back to Palo Alto. Check the evening timetable in our Caltrain guide before you settle in. The Alpine Inn is reachable only by road, so agree on a designated driver or book a rideshare home.
Good to know
- The Alpine Inn and Ludwig's are both closed on Mondays.
- The Alpine Inn takes no reservations. Ludwig's and Gourmet Haus Staudt take bookings for groups.
- Steins Beer Garden in Mountain View has closed.
- Hours here are as posted in late October and early November 2026. Check before a holiday visit.
