On a Sunday afternoon in June 2026, the plaza in front of Palo Alto City Hall filled with rainbow flags, folding tables and a small stage. Speakers took the microphone, dancers and singers performed and dozens of local organizations handed out information to people drifting through between Hamilton Avenue and the City Hall tower. It was the city's first Pride celebration. By Bay Area standards it was modest and neighborly.

This guide covers that first event, what the program looked like, how to get there and where to find larger Pride celebrations nearby. A 2027 date had not been announced when we checked on October 31, 2026. Because 2026 was the first edition, there is no long track record yet. Treat the details below as a guide to what a return event would likely look like, then confirm with the city before you go.

What Palo Alto Pride is

Palo Alto Pride is a free afternoon celebration of the LGBTQ+ community held in King Plaza, the public square outside City Hall at 250 Hamilton Avenue. The city listed it in its Community Services events directory and described it as Palo Alto's first Pride event. It is a gathering rather than a parade. There is no march down University Avenue and no street closure. Instead, people come to listen to speakers, watch performers and meet the local groups that serve LGBTQ+ residents and their families.

Pride events around the world take place in June to mark the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City, which is widely seen as the start of the modern gay rights movement. Large cities hold parades that draw hundreds of thousands of people. Smaller towns like Palo Alto have added their own local celebrations in recent years, aimed at residents who may not travel to San Francisco or San Jose.

The first celebration in 2026

TimeProgram on June 7, 2026
2 to 2:30 p.m.Opening ceremonies
2:30 to 4:45 p.m.Stage program: community speakers and performers in dance, singing and poetry
2 to 5 p.m.Community tables around the plaza
4:45 to 5 p.m.Closing ceremonies

About 40 organizations signed up to table. The city's list included allcove Palo Alto, a youth mental health center; the Avenidas Rainbow Collective, a program for older LGBTQ+ adults; PFLAG San Jose/Peninsula, the family support group; the Rainbow Chamber of Commerce Silicon Valley; and the Stanford Medicine LGBTQ+ Health Program.

The City of Palo Alto and the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation were listed as platinum sponsors. The Palo Alto Weekly and Stanford Medicine were gold sponsors, with more businesses and groups at other levels. The event page is on the city's events directory.

Who it is for

The table list says a lot about the audience. A youth mental health center, a program for older adults and a family support group shared the plaza, so the afternoon was built for every generation. Teens could find peer groups, parents could talk with other parents and older residents could meet people their own age. If you are new to town, it is one of the fastest ways to find local LGBTQ+ resources in one place. Our guides to mental health resources and resources for older adults list more services that run year-round.

What to expect in 2027

No 2027 date or program had been posted on October 31, 2026. We do not know yet whether the celebration will return in the same form. If it does, the 2026 pattern suggests a free Sunday afternoon in early June at King Plaza, with a short stage program and a ring of community tables. June 2027 also brings Stanford's commencement weekend, June 10 to 13, which fills hotels across the area. Our June guide covers the rest of the month.

The best places to watch for news are the city's events directory and the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation, which also co-hosts Thursday Live on California Avenue.

About King Plaza

King Plaza is the paved open space in front of City Hall, between the building and the Hamilton Avenue sidewalk. It is a natural civic stage, steps from the council chambers where the City Council meets most Monday nights. Our guide to King Plaza and City Hall covers the building's history and the public art around it.

The plaza is compact, so even a modest crowd feels lively. Plan for sun on a June afternoon and bring a hat.

Tips for the afternoon

  • Bring water and sun protection. Early June afternoons in Palo Alto are usually warm and dry.
  • Come for the opening. The opening ceremonies set the tone and the stage program is short.
  • Walk the tables. The community tables are the best way to find local support groups, clubs and volunteer opportunities.
  • Bring a tote. Tables hand out flyers, stickers and small giveaways. Palo Alto bans plastic checkout bags.
  • Plan dinner downtown. The event ends at 5 p.m., right as patios on University Avenue fill for the evening.

Good to know

  • The 2026 event was free and needed no ticket.
  • For accessibility questions, contact the city's Community Services department through the event page.
  • Pride events elsewhere in the Bay Area draw far larger crowds. Plan transit carefully for San Francisco in late June.

Parking and Caltrain access

King Plaza is one of the easiest event sites in Palo Alto to reach without a car. Palo Alto station is about half a mile away, a 10 minute walk along University Avenue or Hamilton Avenue. Caltrain runs a weekend schedule on Sundays, so check train times in advance.

If you drive, the city's downtown garages and lots are within a few blocks of City Hall. Our downtown garages guide lists them, along with the time limits that apply. Biking is easy too. Downtown has bike racks on most blocks, though they fill on busy afternoons.

What to do nearby

City Hall is in the middle of downtown Palo Alto, so the rest of the afternoon is easy to fill. University Avenue is a block north, with cafes, bookstores and ice cream shops. The Stanford Theatre on University Avenue programs classic Hollywood films. Our outdoor dining guide lists patios for an early dinner. If you are visiting with kids, the Junior Museum and Zoo is a short drive or bike ride away on Middlefield Road.

June is also the month of Juneteenth. East Palo Alto, Los Altos and Menlo Park mark it with their own events, covered in our Juneteenth guide.

Pride across the Bay Area

Palo Alto's celebration is small and local. For the big parades, look north and south.

  • San Francisco Pride traditionally fills Market Street on the last weekend of June with one of the largest Pride parades in the country. Caltrain is the easy way in from Palo Alto. Expect very full trains on parade day.
  • Silicon Valley Pride in downtown San Jose is held in late summer. In 2025 it celebrated its 50th year with a parade and festival on August 30 and 31. Local reports said the organizers scaled back that year because of funding challenges. Our San Jose day trip guide covers getting there.

If you are heading to San Francisco for Pride weekend, book a room early or stay on the Peninsula and ride the train. You can compare downtown Palo Alto hotels for a quieter base, then browse San Francisco tours for the days around the parade.
