Juneteenth is one of the newest federal holidays and one of the oldest celebrations of freedom in the United States. Around Palo Alto, the day is marked in a patchwork of ways. The city's libraries hold programs for children. East Palo Alto, a short drive across Highway 101, hosts the largest local celebration over a full weekend. Menlo Park and Los Altos add their own festivals. Together they make a full few days of music, food and history in mid June.
This guide explains the holiday, what happened locally in 2026 and how to plan for 2027. We give dates only where organizers published them. For everything else in early summer, see our June guide.
What Juneteenth commemorates
On June 19, 1865, Union troops under Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. There they read General Order No. 3, which announced that all enslaved people in Texas were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect more than two years earlier, but word and enforcement had not reached much of Texas. Freed people in Texas began marking the date the next year. The name Juneteenth blends June and nineteenth.
For more than a century the holiday was celebrated mainly in Black communities, with picnics, church services, readings and music. It spread across the country as families moved west and north. In 2021 Congress made Juneteenth National Independence Day a federal holiday. Today many cities and companies mark it. Celebrations in the Bay Area range from quiet flag raisings to street festivals.

East Palo Alto's Juneteenth weekend
East Palo Alto has a long history as a center of Black community life on the Peninsula. Its Juneteenth celebration is the largest close to Palo Alto. In 2026 the City of East Palo Alto sponsored three days of events.
- Friday night jubilee: an evening billed as an East Palo Alto reunion at the EPACENTER, 1915 Bay Road, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Food and drinks were sold outdoors before live sets from Smooth Jazz Alley and Descendant: The Legends of Funk, a group that includes current members of Sly and the Family Stone and Graham Central Station.
- Saturday celebration: a daytime gathering at Bell Street Park.
- Sunday gospel: a gospel program at a community church to close the weekend.
The Friday event listed the City of East Palo Alto, the East Palo Alto Community Archive, the Community Church, Rogue Nation and the EPACENTER as sponsors. The format has shifted over the years. In 2022, for example, the city held a Juneteenth food and music festival at University Circle. Check the City of East Palo Alto's website in late spring for the current plan.
Los Altos and Menlo Park
Los Altos Juneteenth Festival
The Los Altos Juneteenth Festival reached its seventh year in 2026, on Saturday, June 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Earlier editions have featured music, speakers, poetry, education booths, community art and food. The 2022 festival was held at 97 Hillview Avenue, the Los Altos Community Center site. Our Los Altos guide covers the town and its downtown, which is easy to pair with a festival visit.
Menlo Park
The City of Menlo Park listed a Juneteenth celebration on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m., with live music and performances. Look for it on the city's community events calendar in spring.
Juneteenth in Palo Alto itself
Within city limits, Juneteenth programming has centered on the library. In 2026 Mitchell Park Library held a special storytime and craft at 3 p.m. on June 19. Our guide to Palo Alto libraries explains the branches and how to find events.
Stanford has also marked Juneteenth with its own programs in past years. In 2022 the university's lineup included a history exhibit, a quilt presentation, art sessions and a worship service in Memorial Church. Stanford's offerings change each year, so look for a current listing rather than relying on an old schedule.
Other ways to mark the day
Not every Juneteenth needs a festival. A few quieter options close to home:
- Learn local history. The East Palo Alto Community Archive, one of the 2026 jubilee sponsors, collects the stories of a city shaped by Black residents who settled there in the decades after World War II. Its website is a good place to start.
- Read with kids. Library storytimes around the holiday are free and short enough for toddlers.
- Support local businesses. East Palo Alto's restaurants and shops are a short drive or bike ride from Palo Alto. Our East Palo Alto food guide has ideas.
Planning for Juneteenth 2027
In 2027 Juneteenth falls on a Saturday. That shapes the weekend in a few ways:
- Holiday observance. When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, federal offices usually observe it on the Friday before, June 18. Local governments and employers set their own rules, so check before assuming a day off.
- Festival timing. A Saturday Juneteenth makes it likely that weekend events cluster on June 19 and 20, but no local organizer had posted 2027 dates as of late October 2026.
- When to look. Watch city calendars in May and early June. Palo Alto's own roundup came out on June 16 in 2026, just days before the holiday.
Good to know
- Mid June is busy around Stanford. Commencement weekend in 2027 runs June 10 to 13, so rooms may be tight the week before Juneteenth.
- June days are usually warm and dry. Bring sun protection to afternoon festivals.
- Free events still need planning. Parking near festival sites can fill, so consider biking or a short rideshare.
Bigger celebrations farther away
If you want a large street festival, look south to San Jose. Its Juneteenth in the Streets festival downtown has run for more than four decades and was in its 41st year in 2022. Our San Jose day trip guide covers getting there by Caltrain. Oakland and San Francisco also host major festivals. KQED publishes a Bay Area Juneteenth guide each June that is a good starting point.
Closer to home, a Juneteenth weekend pairs well with other early summer plans, from the farmers markets to the free city park concerts that begin later in June. Our events calendar has the full year.
