Earth Day started in 1970 and Palo Alto, a city that runs its own electric, gas and water utilities, has good reason to take it seriously. Each spring the city holds a free Earth Day Festival on the grounds of the Palo Alto Art Center. It mixes practical help with family fun. One table explains heat pump water heaters. The next has kids signing a sidewalk chalk pledge. A few steps away, a bald eagle from the Junior Museum and Zoo watches the crowd.

This guide covers what the festival includes, what recent years looked like and how to plan for 2027. We give dates only where the city published them. For the rest of the season, see our April guide.

A short history of Earth Day

The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970. Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson proposed a national teach-in on the environment and millions of Americans joined rallies, cleanups and campus events. The day is often credited with building support for the environmental laws that followed in the early 1970s. It went international in 1990 and is now marked in countries around the world.

In Palo Alto today, the focus is less on protest and more on practical change at home, which is the spirit of the city's festival.

The Earth Day Festival at a glance

The festival is a Sunday afternoon event. In both 2025 and 2026 it ran from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Palo Alto Art Center, 1313 Newell Road, the former city hall beside Rinconada Park. It is free and open to all ages.

Local reporting in 2026 described it as the city's annual Earth Day Festival. The city ties the event to its climate plan, which we explain below.

What you will find

The festival is a set of tables and activities spread across the Art Center grounds. The 2025 city listing promised:

  • Experts on switching a home or business to electric appliances
  • Water conservation tips
  • Help learning to repair household items instead of replacing them
  • Park rangers talking about local ecology and education programs
  • Emergency preparedness resources
  • Information on city jobs in sustainability and climate work
  • Library storytimes for kids
  • Zero Waste trivia games
  • Plant giveaways and guided garden tours
  • A youth sustainability networking area
  • Sequoia the bald eagle and Animal Control's gopher snake
  • A Planet Protection Pledge signed in sidewalk chalk

The 2026 festival had more than 30 booths. Hosts included:

  • The Palo Alto Fire Department
  • The Palo Alto City Library
  • The Student Climate Coalition
  • Environmental Volunteers, which teaches environmental science to children in kindergarten through sixth grade
  • The Junior Museum and Zoo, whose bald eagle Sequoia was a crowd favorite

City staff covered electric alternatives, water savings, repair and reuse and volunteer openings. The opening program featured the mayor, city officials and the president of the city's Youth Climate Advisory Board.

Why the city puts on the festival

The festival is a public face for the city's Sustainability and Climate Action Plan, known locally as S/CAP. Its headline goal, often called 80 by 30, is to cut the city's greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. Much of the remaining work happens in homes, with gas furnaces, water heaters and stoves being swapped for electric ones and gasoline cars for electric vehicles.

That explains the practical tilt of the booths. City of Palo Alto Utilities sells electricity, gas, water and fiber internet directly to residents and runs rebate programs for efficiency upgrades. If you are thinking about a heat pump or an induction stove, the festival is a low-pressure place to ask questions. Our guide to City of Palo Alto Utilities explains the basics and our page on water conservation covers rebates and rules for water.

Planning for Earth Day 2027

Earth Day itself falls on Thursday, April 22, 2027. As of late October 2026 the city had not posted a festival date. Recent years point to the likely shape:

  1. A Sunday afternoon in April, on or near the weekend around Earth Day.
  2. About three hours, 1 to 4 p.m. in both recent years.
  3. The Palo Alto Art Center as the venue, though the city could choose another site.

Look for the listing on the city's events directory in early spring. The 2026 festival page shows the format.

Getting there

The city says parking at the Art Center is limited and asks people to walk, bike or take transit. In 2025 it offered bike parking and bike repair stations at the festival, which fits the theme. The Art Center is in the Community Center neighborhood, a short ride on quiet streets from downtown, Crescent Park and Midtown. From the University Avenue Caltrain station it is a walk of a bit over a mile.

Good to know

  • The festival is short. Arrive by 2 p.m. to see everything before booths pack up.
  • Plant giveaways can run out, so go early if you want one.
  • Rinconada Park next door has a playground and shade for a picnic before or after.

Tips for families

  • Start with the animals. The eagle and other live animals are popular with young children. Visit them first, then browse the tables.
  • Bring a bag. Many booths hand out brochures, seeds or small giveaways.
  • Make it a park day. Rinconada Park is right next door. Our Rinconada Park guide covers the playground and pool.
  • Come by bike. It is the easiest way in. The 2025 festival had bike parking and repair stations for a quick tune.

Other ways to mark Earth Month

April is a lovely month to get outside around Palo Alto. The festival is only one way to celebrate.

  • Go see the wildflowers. The foothill preserves are at their greenest in April. Our wildflowers guide lists the best trails.
  • Walk the Baylands. Spring migration brings shorebirds to the marshes. See our Baylands Nature Preserve guide.
  • Join a work day. Local groups run habitat restoration days in the parks and preserves. Our volunteering guide has contacts.
  • Sort your waste right. Palo Alto sorts waste into separate bins for landfill, recycling and compost. Our guide to trash, recycling and compost explains what goes where.

Families who enjoy the festival may also like the Junior Museum and Zoo's regular programs and the city's nature programs for kids, which run through the year.
