About Bevri
Bevri is a Georgian restaurant on University Avenue in downtown Palo Alto. It opened in 2018 and calls itself the Bay Area's first Georgian restaurant. The name means "a lot" in Georgian. The restaurant says you will see that in the portions, the wine list and the way plates pile up on the table.
Georgia, the country in the Caucasus between Europe and Asia, has a food culture built around the supra, a long feast with many shared dishes. Bevri says its cooking is built around that idea: a long table, a lot of dishes and no rush to leave. It is open every day for lunch and dinner, from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
What to order
Bevri keeps a short list of the dishes it is known for on its home page. The full menu goes further, but these are the place to start:
- Khachapuri adjaruli: a boat of cheese bread finished with butter and egg. The restaurant suggests tearing off the edges and swirling them through the middle.
- Khinkali: hand-folded soup dumplings. You hold them by the twist at the top, bite a small hole, sip the broth and then eat the rest.
- Pkhali: spinach and beet spreads with walnuts and herbs, served with eggplant rolls.
- Chicken tapaka: chicken pressed flat and pan-fried until the skin is crisp.
The khachapuri comes out of a wood-fired oven, which sits in the dining room. Bevri also has dedicated pages on its website about khachapuri and khinkali for anyone curious about the dishes. Menus change, so check the current list before you go.
Georgian wine
Behind the bar is a wall of Georgian wine. Bevri highlights qvevri wines, which are fermented in clay vessels called qvevri. The restaurant notes this method goes back about eight thousand years in Georgia. It describes the wine program as something you will not find anywhere else nearby. Ask the staff for help if the names are new to you.
The tip-free policy
Bevri runs a tip-free model. The restaurant says there is no tip line, no service charge and no automatic gratuity, whether you are a table of two or a party of 25. Its team is paid a set wage rather than depending on tips. Bevri says this is closer to how restaurants work in Georgia and much of Europe. For diners, it means the total on the menu is the total you pay.
The room, groups and catering
Hand-woven textiles and the wood-fired oven set the tone inside. Seating options include the main dining room, a patio, a private room, a semi-private space and the bar. That range gives groups and celebrations several options. The website has an Events page for private dining.
Bevri also caters across the Peninsula and South Bay, from office lunches to weddings and birthdays. Catering menus include oven-fresh khachapuri, trays of khinkali, grilled meats and salads. The restaurant asks for 48 hours' notice and offers pickup at 335 University Avenue between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. any day.
Who it suits
Bevri suits curious eaters who want something different from the usual downtown mix. It also suits groups who like to share. A table of four can cover the signature dishes and still have room to explore the rest of the menu. It works for a weekday lunch as well as dinner, since the kitchen is open from 11:30 a.m. every day. Celebrations have the private room and semi-private space. Because the restaurant is tip-free, it is also easy for groups splitting a bill. Vegetarians should look at the cheese breads and vegetable spreads such as pkhali, then check the full menu for other meatless choices.
