About Sigona's Farmers Market
Sigona's Farmers Market is a family-owned produce and specialty food market with two stores, one in Redwood City and one at Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. It began in 1975 as an everyday farmers market and has grown into a full specialty grocer while keeping what the family calls an old-fashioned, corner-grocer feel. The Sigona family still runs it. Its website shows family members at the Franzella Fruit Market in San Francisco in 1940, long before the first Sigona's opened.
The Redwood City store, across from Costco on Middlefield Road, is the flagship. The Palo Alto store sits at the Sand Hill Road side of Stanford Shopping Center, next to Pacific Catch and Schaub's Meat Fish and Poultry. That placement makes it easy to put together a full meal from neighboring shops.
What you will find
Produce is still the center of the business. Sigona's says it stocks locally grown, organic and seasonal fruit and vegetables. Its website keeps an In Season at the Store page so shoppers can see what is arriving. Beyond produce, the market lists specialty foods sourced locally and from around the world, gourmet ingredients, more than 250 artisan cheeses, fresh-cut flowers, craft beers and wine.
Olive oil and balsamic vinegar are a particular focus. The store carries fresh-pressed and seasonal olive oils from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, along with fused and infused oils and balsamics and specialty vinegars. Dried fruits and nuts are another specialty. Its shelves and online shop also carry jams, pasta sauces such as Sigona's Old World Marinara and stuffed Medjool dates.
Gifts and online orders
Sigona's runs an online shop that ships within the United States. It sells gift boxes and baskets of dried fruit and nuts, olive oil and balsamic gift sets, cheese and charcuterie gifts, gift cards and seasonal items such as panettone and pandoro around the holidays. The store notes that online orders are processed on weekday mornings and that hand-packed gifts can take longer when ordered in large numbers. If you need gifts by a date in December, order early.
For groceries from the stores themselves, Sigona's offers delivery through Instacart.
The family behind it
Sigona's About page shows several generations of the family at work. A 2023 photo names Carmelo, Robbie, Paul, Jimmy and John Jr. A 2024 photo shows Robbie Sigona beside the market's new sign. An older photo from 1992 shows Carmelo Sigona and others in front of the Redwood City store. The company frames all of this as part of the same idea it started with in 1975: a fresh market where you can taste, feel and see what you are buying, with the feel of an old-fashioned open-air stand.
It suits home cooks shopping for a dinner party, people building a cheese board or a picnic and anyone looking for a food gift. The cheese and charcuterie gifts and olive oil sets are designed to be given. For everyday shopping, the Palo Alto store is the more convenient stop than the Redwood City flagship if you live or work near Stanford.
