Home VR headsets are good, but a VR arena is a different thing. You walk around a real room with friends, carrying props that feel like the weapons or tools in the game. Trackers on your wrists, ankles and head put your whole body into a shared virtual world. You see your teammates as characters beside you, fight off zombies or dragons together and hear each other yell. For groups it lands somewhere between an escape room and a theme park ride.

Palo Alto has no VR arena we could confirm. The nearest are run by Sandbox VR, a chain with five Bay Area stores. Two are inside shopping malls about 20 minutes from Palo Alto, one at Hillsdale in San Mateo and one at Valley Fair in Santa Clara. We checked each location page in late October and early November 2026. All showed current hours, prices and a November 2026 player challenge. Prices and game lineups change, so check before you book.

Sandbox VR San Mateo (Hillsdale)

The San Mateo store is on the second floor of Hillsdale Shopping Center at 60 East 31st Avenue, suite 2044, next to Macy's and across from Bath and Body Works. It has two entrances, one from inside the mall and one from the two-story parking structure by a skybridge. It is the closest VR arena to Palo Alto on the Peninsula and the easiest to reach by train, since Hillsdale Caltrain station is a short walk from the mall. Its phone number is 650-437-5285. Our San Mateo guide has more about the area.

Sandbox VR San Jose (Valley Fair)

Sandbox VR calls its Valley Fair store San Jose, though the mall's address at 2855 Stevens Creek Boulevard is in Santa Clara. It is on the second floor, in suite 2721. In late 2026 it listed tickets from $55 on weekdays, $65 on weekends and $55 for matinee sessions. You can pair it with shopping and dinner at Valley Fair or across the street at Santana Row. Our Santana Row and Valley Fair guide covers parking and places to eat.

Sandbox VR San Francisco

The San Francisco store at 767B Market Street sits at Yerba Buena Lane, below the Four Seasons Hotel. It has a party room. In late 2026 it listed weekday tickets from $39 and weekend tickets from $55, the lowest starting prices of the three. It is a long trip for a VR session alone, but it fits a day in the city. Our San Francisco day trip has the rest of the plan, or you can browse San Francisco experiences to fill the day.

The games

All three stores showed the same lineup in November 2026. It included:

  • Deadwood Origins: the newest game, part of Sandbox's zombie series.
  • Deadwood Phobia: a psychological horror game, the third chapter of the zombie trilogy.
  • Deadwood Valley and Deadwood Mansion: the earlier zombie games.
  • Seekers of the Shard: Dragonfire: a fantasy game where you pick a hero class.
  • Squid Game Virtuals: competitive games based on the Netflix series.
  • Stranger Things: Catalyst: based on the Netflix series.
  • Age of Dinosaurs: flagged as a family favorite.
  • Amber Sky 2088, Rebel Moon: The Descent and Curse of Davy Jones: sci-fi and pirate adventures.
  • UFL: offered in English, Mandarin and Cantonese only.

Most games are offered in several languages, including English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Spanish. Sandbox VR also sells bundles of its Deadwood games at a discount and ran a player challenge through November 8, 2026.

How a session works

  1. Book online. Pick a location, a game and a time slot.
  2. Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early. Sandbox VR requires check-in before your slot and cannot start until the whole group is there.
  3. Suit up. Staff fit you with a headset, a haptic vest and motion trackers on your wrists and ankles.
  4. Play. You move around a real room together, using props that react with recoil and feeling hits through the vest.

The late policy is strict. Sandbox VR allows a 5-minute grace period. Arrive later than that and the booking is cancelled with a $50 fee, with the rest of your payment turned into a voucher. No-shows lose the payment. Build in time for mall parking and the walk to the store.

Age, health and group rules

The Sandbox VR FAQ covered these points in late 2026:

  • Under 18: a parent or guardian must be physically present in the store to sign a minor waiver.
  • Group size: 2 to 6 players per session. Larger groups book through the private events page.
  • Size: the haptic vests adjust up to 50 inches.
  • Health: not recommended for pregnant guests or people with heart conditions.
  • Clothes: wear comfortable clothes you can move in.

Horror games are not for everyone. For a mixed group with younger kids, Age of Dinosaurs or the Dragonfire fantasy game is a safer pick than the Deadwood series.

Birthdays and team outings

VR arenas suit groups of four to six, which is exactly one session. For a bigger party, book back-to-back sessions or contact Sandbox's private events team. Teens love the competitive games. Office teams tend to pick the co-op zombie games. Weekday matinees are cheaper and easier to book. For more group ideas, see our escape rooms guide and teens guide.

Getting there

For Hillsdale, Caltrain is the easy option. Ride north from Palo Alto or California Avenue to Hillsdale station, then walk a few blocks to the mall. Driving takes about 20 minutes on Highway 101 or El Camino Real, with parking in the mall garages. Valley Fair is about 20 minutes south via Interstate 280 or Highway 101 to Interstate 880. Its garages fill on weekend afternoons, so leave extra time before a booked slot. For San Francisco, take Caltrain to the 4th and King terminal and walk or ride Muni to Market Street. Our Caltrain guide covers fares and the last trains home.

VR or an escape room?

Both are timed group games, but they feel different. VR is physical and loud, with action, shooting and teamwork against enemies. Escape rooms are slower and cerebral, built around puzzles, codes and searching. Groups that like video games and action movies usually prefer VR. Groups that like crosswords and riddles lean toward escape rooms. For a big birthday you can do both in one afternoon.

Good to know

  • Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early. Late arrivals beyond 5 minutes lose the slot.
  • Bring a parent for players under 18.
  • Hillsdale is a short walk from Hillsdale Caltrain station.
  • Prices and hours above are as posted in late 2026 and can change.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a VR arcade in Palo Alto?

We could not confirm one inside Palo Alto in 2026. The closest VR arenas are Sandbox VR on the second floor of Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo and Sandbox VR on the second floor of Westfield Valley Fair in Santa Clara, each about 20 minutes away.

How much does Sandbox VR cost?

Prices vary by location and time. In late 2026 the Valley Fair location listed tickets from $55 on weekdays and $65 on weekends. The San Francisco store listed weekday tickets from $39 and weekend tickets from $55. Check the booking page for exact prices by game and time.

How old do you have to be for Sandbox VR?

Sandbox VR's FAQ does not set a fixed minimum age. Guests under 18 need a parent or guardian physically present in the store to sign a minor waiver form. Some games are horror themed, so pick the experience to suit the youngest player.

How many people can play Sandbox VR at once?

Each session takes at least 2 and up to 6 players. Groups larger than 6 can book through Sandbox VR's private events team, which handles birthdays, bachelorette parties and corporate offsites.

Does VR make you motion sick?

Some people feel queasy in VR headsets. Sandbox VR says its full-body tracking, which shows your own body moving in the game, helps prevent motion sickness. It does not recommend its games for pregnant guests or people with heart conditions.
