Laser tag was the original plan for this page. When we checked in late 2026, the only laser tag arena we could confirm within about 25 miles of Palo Alto was the small one at Milpitas Golfland, covered in our mini golf guide. So this guide covers a different indoor game that the area does unusually well: table tennis.

The South Bay is a national hub for table tennis. The 2026 US National Table Tennis Championships were held in San Jose in July, with more than 1,100 players. Two of the busiest clubs are in Milpitas, about 25 minutes from Palo Alto. Both sell table time to recreational players as well as training juniors chasing national titles. This guide covers where to play, what it costs and how to get started. We checked each venue's own site in late October and early November 2026. Rates and hours change, so confirm before you go.

BAPPA Table Tennis, Milpitas

BAPPA Table Tennis is in Building 5 of the South Bay Tech Center at 1759 South Main Street, Suite 108, in Milpitas. It is a training club with a strong junior program. Its players won 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals at the 2026 US Nationals in San Jose, held July 3 to 9. The club has also hosted its own Bay Area tournaments. It also welcomes recreational players.

The club listed in late 2026:

  • Hours: Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Drop-in play: $15 per person, reservation required. Call or text (408) 421-6353 to reserve a table.
  • Paddle and ball rental: $3 per person.
  • Programs: group classes with a new student discount, private lessons, an after-school program and camps during school breaks, including a summer camp that ran June 1 to August 21, 2026.

Because drop-in needs a reservation, do not just show up on a weekend afternoon. Classes and camps take over tables at set times.

Round1, San Jose

For a casual game with friends rather than a training session, Round1 at Eastridge Shopping Center rents ping pong tables by the hour, next to bowling lanes, billiards tables, karaoke rooms and a big arcade. It listed hours of 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day. The posted ping pong rate for its price tier was $11 an hour per table before 4 p.m. on weekdays, $14.50 after 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday and $18.50 on Friday evenings and weekends. Club members save $1. Our billiards and darts guide and karaoke guide cover the rest of Round1.

Free tables for teens in Palo Alto

Inside the city, the best free table belongs to teenagers. The Drop, the city's teen center in the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center at 3700 Middlefield Road, has ping pong, pool and foosball tables for middle and high school students. It is open weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m. during the school year and teens need a membership form signed by a parent on their first visit. Our teens guide has the details.

Getting started as an adult

  1. Rent first, buy later. Club paddles are fine for your first few sessions.
  2. Take a beginner class. A few lessons fix grip and stroke habits that are hard to unlearn.
  3. Wear indoor court shoes. Flat, non-marking soles grip the floor and protect it.
  4. Book quiet hours. Weekday daytime is easiest at both Milpitas clubs.
  5. Learn the scoring. Games go to 11 points and you must win by 2. Serves switch every 2 points.

Once you can keep a rally going, ask about league nights or ratings events. US table tennis uses a numeric rating system, so you can find opponents at your level.

Paddles and gear

A basic paddle from a big-box store works for rallying in a garage. Club players use a separate blade and rubbers glued on to suit their style, which is a rabbit hole worth avoiding for your first few months. When you are ready, ask a coach at either club to recommend an all-round setup for an improving player. Balls are 40 millimeters and labeled with stars; three-star balls are the standard for match play. For general sports gear, see our sporting goods guide. A common guideline for a home table is a room about 19 by 11 feet, though you can rally in less.

Table tennis for kids

Table tennis is a good sport for kids who are not into contact sports. It builds reflexes and focus. School-age children can start in group classes. Both Milpitas clubs run junior classes, private coaching and camps during school breaks. BAPPA also runs an after-school program. Compare schedules and drive times before committing to a weekly class, since Milpitas is a commute at rush hour. Our youth sports guide lists sports closer to home.

Getting there

Both clubs are in Milpitas, reached by Highway 237 east from Mountain View. Expect about 25 minutes in light traffic and much longer at weekday rush hour. Round1 at Eastridge is in east San Jose, about 30 minutes away. Transit from Palo Alto to any of them takes well over an hour, so most players drive or carpool. Visitors without a car can compare rental cars.

Good to know

  • Reserve before you drive to BAPPA. Drop-in needs a booking.
  • ICC day passes are $15 for one player or $30 for a family.
  • Bring indoor shoes with non-marking soles.
  • Rates above are as posted in late 2026 and can change.
