Mini golf is the easy family outing: no skills needed, no reservations at most courses and a round takes under an hour. It is also a cheap date and a reliable birthday plan. The catch for Palo Alto residents is distance. The city has no public mini golf course we could confirm in 2026, so a round means a short drive south or east.

The good news is that four courses we checked on their own websites in late October and early November 2026 are within about 25 miles. Three belong to Golfland, the family fun center chain that has run Bay Area courses for decades. The fourth is a newer bar and games venue in Fremont. This guide covers prices, hours and age rules as each venue posted them. Prices and hours change, so check the venue's page before you go.

Golfland USA, Sunnyvale

The closest course is Golfland USA at 855 East El Camino Real in Sunnyvale, a straight run down El Camino Real from Palo Alto. It has two 18-hole miniature golf courses in a garden setting, a large video game arcade and a snack bar with nachos, pretzels, Icees and thick shakes. Its decorated Halloween course in October was a seasonal extra, so expect the regular layout through the winter.

The prices page in November 2026 listed:

  • General golf: $18.50 for one 18-hole round, ages 12 to 59.
  • Junior golf: $17.50, ages 4 to 11.
  • Senior golf: $17.50, ages 60 and up.
  • Toddlers: free for ages 3 and under with a paying adult. Use the code "toddler" in the Golfland app if you want them on the scorecard.
  • Replay: $5 for a second round the same day after a full-price round.

The arcade is tokenless. You load points onto a reusable card at $1 for 5 points or buy a time play card. The hours calendar showed 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day in November 2026. Golf sales end 45 minutes before closing. Online tickets need a photo ID and the credit card you paid with when you redeem them. Our Sunnyvale guide has ideas for dinner nearby.

Milpitas Golfland

Milpitas Golfland at 1199 Jacklin Road is the bigger park and the better pick for a long afternoon. It has three courses, each with its own landmarks: a pagoda, a Spanish mission and a clock tower on one, a castle, an Old West fort and a lighthouse on another. Beyond golf there are outdoor bumper cars under a shaded canopy, a laser tag arena called Lazer Knights, a laser maze, an arcade and a pizza parlor that also serves burgers, fries and shakes.

Posted prices in November 2026:

  • Golf: $18 for ages 12 to 59 and $16 for ages 4 to 11 or 60 plus. A same-day replay is $6. Online golf was advertised from $13.
  • Bumper cars: $9 a ride. Drivers must be at least 44 inches tall and the cars have a 275-pound limit.
  • Laser tag: $12 for a 7.5-minute game, $8 for a same-day replay. The last game starts 20 minutes before closing.
  • Laser maze: $8 for two rounds.
  • Fun Pass: $46 for three hours of unlimited golf, bumper cars, laser maze and laser tag plus a 35-point arcade card.

The park listed 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily in November 2026, with the pizza counter opening at 11 a.m. If your group wants laser tag, this is the one place in the area we could confirm that offers it. Our Milpitas guide covers the rest of the city.

Emerald Hills Golfland, San Jose

Emerald Hills Golfland at 976 Blossom Hill Road in south San Jose has two courses, an arcade and a snack bar. It also has a splash pad with three toddler-sized slides that is free on weekdays. Its water slides run in season. It listed 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in November 2026. It is the farthest of the four from Palo Alto, so it makes most sense if you are already in south San Jose or want the splash pad on a hot day. Our San Jose day trip guide has more to pair with it.

Tee & Timber, Fremont

For adults, Tee & Timber at 40480 Albrae Street in Fremont mixes a 10-hole tech mini golf course with motion-activated obstacles, axe throwing on lanes with projected targets and a dart game it calls Krazy Darts. There is a full bar with rotating draft beers and cocktails plus pizza, burgers and finger food. Its site listed these hours in late 2026:

  • Monday: closed
  • Tuesday to Thursday: 4:30 to 10 p.m.
  • Friday: 4:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.
  • Saturday: noon to 1 a.m.
  • Sunday: noon to 10 p.m.

The venue is 21 and over after 8 p.m. daily, so bring kids early. It held a Halloween weekend with a DJ and costume contests in October 2026. The site did not list mini golf prices, so check the booking page before you go. The drive crosses the Dumbarton Bridge, which charges a toll westbound on the way home. Our axe throwing guide covers the lanes in more detail.

What closed

Older lists still name courses that are gone. Tipsy Putt, the mini golf bar in Sunnyvale, has closed. Do not plan a night around it. We also leave out courses we could not confirm with a current website and hours.

Mini golf with young kids

A full 18 holes can be long for a preschooler. A few habits help:

  1. Go early on weekends. Golfland opens at 10 a.m. Mornings are calmer and cooler on the outdoor courses.
  2. Ask for a short putter. Courses keep several lengths. A putter that reaches the child's belly button is about right.
  3. Let little ones skip holes. No one minds if a four-year-old walks ahead to the windmill.
  4. Save the arcade for last. It works as a reward and keeps the round moving.
  5. Bring layers. Evenings on the courses get cool, even after a warm day.

All three Golfland parks sell birthday party packages. Milpitas caps its packages at 15 participants. Our birthday party guide compares them with options in Palo Alto.

Weather and timing

The Golfland courses are outdoors. Rain closes the greens or makes them slippery, so on a storm day pick something under a roof. Our rainy day guide and bowling and arcades guide have indoor options. On dry winter evenings the courses are lit and quiet. Summer weekends are the busiest time, especially in the afternoon.

Getting there

All four courses are easiest by car. Golfland USA is about 20 minutes south on El Camino Real or Central Expressway. Milpitas Golfland and Tee & Timber are both reached across the bay side of the valley, via Highway 237 to Milpitas or the Dumbarton Bridge to Fremont. Emerald Hills is down Highway 85 in south San Jose. If you are visiting without a car, you can compare rental cars for a day. VTA buses run along El Camino Real to Sunnyvale. Our VTA guide explains routes and fares.
