Burlingame is better known for shopping than for food, yet it eats well. Burlingame Avenue, the downtown street that runs from the Caltrain station up to El Camino Real, has cafes, bakeries and sit-down restaurants on almost every block. About a mile north, Broadway has its own row of family-run places with a quieter feel. Both streets are a short drive from SFO, which makes Burlingame a natural stop before or after a flight.
This page names only places we confirmed on their own websites in late October 2026. The downtown business district counts about 500 businesses in its area. We could not check every restaurant among them. Descriptions are factual: what each place serves, where it is and what its website says about hours. For shops, parks and hotels, see our Burlingame town guide.
How the two districts work
Downtown Burlingame covers Burlingame Avenue and the blocks around it, from El Camino Real east to California Drive and from Chapin Avenue to Howard Avenue. The side streets matter. Lorton Avenue, Park Road, Primrose Road and Donnelly Avenue all hold restaurants within a block of the main street. Public parking lots sit behind the storefronts.
Broadway runs between California Drive and El Camino Real near the Broadway interchange on Highway 101. The city describes it as a smaller shopping street with a 1950s feel. It is the better choice when downtown is crowded or when you are coming from the highway.

It sells European-style pastries, breads and specialty cakes such as the Princess Cake. It also runs a cafe with breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Its website lists bakery hours of 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday. Custom cakes need at least 24 hours' notice online.

Eating near SFO
Burlingame is the closest real restaurant town to the airport. If you have a few hours before a flight, downtown is roughly a ten to fifteen minute drive from the terminals outside rush hour. The bayfront hotel district along Old Bayshore Highway and Airport Boulevard is closer, with hotel restaurants and a shoreline path where you can watch planes land. Plan for traffic on Highway 101, especially on weekday afternoons. Our guide to getting to Palo Alto from SFO explains the trip south.
For an early flight, many travelers stay one night by the airport. You can compare Burlingame hotels near SFO for your dates.
A closer look at Broadway
Broadway is easy to overlook because it sits near a freeway exit, yet it has its own business improvement district, its own merchant website and a printed map from the city. The city describes the street as lined with family-owned shops and restaurants. Broadway Prime is the anchor for dinner. During the day the street is calmer than Burlingame Avenue, parking is simpler and it is close to the Broadway Caltrain station for the trains that stop there. The district also hosts an annual pet parade, which fills the sidewalks for an afternoon.
Planning tips
- By train: The Burlingame Caltrain station sits at the foot of Burlingame Avenue. The Broadway station has limited service, so check the timetable.
- By car: Downtown has public lots behind the shops. Broadway has street parking and small lots.
- Weekend timing: Saturday afternoons are the busiest time on Burlingame Avenue, when shoppers and diners overlap.
- Mondays: Backhaus closes on Mondays and Copenhagen does not serve dinner that night.
- Events: Street fairs such as Fall Fest close part of the avenue. Check the city calendar before you drive.
- Split the day: Shop Burlingame Avenue in the morning, then drive five minutes to Broadway for a quieter lunch or an early prime rib dinner.
