Palo Alto is a fit town. Weekend mornings bring runners to the Baylands levees and cyclists to the foothills, while weekday evenings fill studio classes near California Avenue and Stanford Shopping Center. Indoors, the choice runs from a big community YMCA to a members' club with a rooftop pool and a cluster of 50-minute boutique classes.

This guide groups gyms and fitness studios by part of town. Every business named here is in our local business directory, where you will find hours, phone numbers and the sources we checked. We do not rank or review gyms and we do not list prices, since memberships and class packs change often. Visit, take an intro class if one is offered and decide for yourself. For mat-based classes, see our separate guide to yoga and Pilates studios.

Types of gyms in Palo Alto

It helps to know what kind of place you want before you start touring. Most options in town fall into five groups.

  • Community gyms. The YMCA offers weights, cardio, pools and group classes under one membership, with programs for kids and older adults.
  • Full-service clubs. Equinox combines a gym floor, group classes, a pool and a spa in one membership club.
  • Boutique studios. Barry's, SoulCycle and Orangetheory sell timed classes in a single format, usually booked online in advance.
  • Personal training studios. Smaller spaces such as Lively X Studio and Silicon Valley Fit focus on one-on-one or small group coaching.
  • Combat sports. Boxing and judo clubs near California Avenue teach technique along with conditioning.

Palo Alto also has plenty of free outdoor exercise. The city's parks have tennis and pickleball courts, the Stanford Dish loop is a classic hill walk and the flat street grid suits cycling. Our guides to tennis and pickleball and hiking the Dish cover those.

South Palo Alto and the Bayshore

The largest gym in the city is the YMCA in south Palo Alto, east of Middlefield Road. A national chain studio sits on West Bayshore Road near Highway 101.

  • Palo Alto Family YMCA, 3412 Ross Road. The YMCA of Silicon Valley's page shows a weight room, cardio room, TRX room, spin bikes, a basketball court, a lap pool and a warm water pool. It says membership includes group classes such as Pilates, yoga, water exercise and cycling. Weekday hours are listed as 6:15 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Y also links to a financial assistance program from the same page.
  • Orangetheory Fitness, 2190 West Bayshore Road, Suite 150. Coach-led interval classes paced by heart rate monitors. The studio also calls itself a HYROX training studio.

Across Highway 101, the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA at 550 Bell Street lists a gym, cardio and free weights, a cycling room, child care and an outdoor pool. Check with the Y about whether your membership covers both branches.

California Avenue and Portage Avenue

The California Avenue district has the densest mix of small fitness businesses in town, all within a few blocks of the California Avenue Caltrain station. Equinox sits a short walk away on Portage Avenue, off El Camino Real.

  • Equinox, 440 Portage Avenue. A membership club with a rooftop pool, group fitness, Pilates, personal training and The Spa by Equinox. It lists weekday hours from 5 a.m. and a Kids Club on weekday mornings.

Pure Barre and Club Pilates are on the same street. We cover them in the yoga and Pilates guide.

Downtown

Downtown has fewer gyms than you might expect, since ground-floor space on University Avenue mostly goes to shops and restaurants. One small studio stands out on Emerson Street.

  • Lively X Studio, 825 Emerson Street. A strength and conditioning studio for women, founded in 2022, with small group classes, personal training, nutrition coaching and a run club.

If you work downtown and want a lunchtime workout, the studios at Stanford Shopping Center and Town & Country Village are a short bike ride away along Alma Street or El Camino Real.

Stanford Shopping Center

Two national studio chains have locations in the outdoor mall on Sand Hill Road. Both book classes online and sell class packs or memberships. The Stanford Shopping Center guide explains parking and where the studios sit within the center.

  • Barry's, 228 Stanford Shopping Center. Fifty-minute classes that alternate treadmill intervals with floor strength work. The studio lists showers, lockers and towels.
  • SoulCycle, 669 Stanford Shopping Center, C12. Indoor cycling classes set to choreographed playlists. First-time riders are asked to arrive 15 minutes early and the studio rents cycling shoes at the front desk.

The city pool and public programs

Palo Alto's public pool is Rinconada Pool at 777 Embarcadero Road in Rinconada Park. It is open year-round, with a 25-yard lap pool of 14 lanes kept at about 81°F and a separate play pool. Palo Alto Swim & Sport runs lap swim, open swim and lessons for the city. Our swimming pools guide has drop-in details and winter hours.

The city's Community Services Department also offers adult fitness classes through its Enjoy! catalog. Registration runs on the CivicRec Rec1 system. Winter 2027 registration opens December 3, 2026 for residents and December 10 for nonresidents. Class offerings vary by season, so browse the catalog when it comes out.

Fitness for kids

Several gyms have programs for children. One is built entirely around them.

  • My Gym Palo Alto, 2655 Middlefield Road in Midtown. A children's fitness center with parent-and-child classes from three months, gymnastics and Ninja classes, camps and parties.
  • NITO Boxing and Tamayo's Judo, listed above, both teach young students.
  • The YMCA lists swim lessons and a Teens Club Room.

For team sports, see our guide to youth sports in Palo Alto.

How to choose a gym

The best gym is usually the one close enough that you keep going. A few practical questions help narrow the list.

  1. Location and parking. California Avenue has public garages and the Stanford Shopping Center has large surface lots. Downtown parking has time limits on many streets.
  2. Hours. If you train before work, check opening times on the gym's own page. Our directory lists the hours each business published.
  3. Contract terms. Ask about cancellation notice, freeze options and whether a membership works at other branches.
  4. Try before you commit. Many studios list a free or discounted first class or consultation.
  5. Health plan benefits. Some insurance plans include fitness programs. Check your plan's network with your insurer and ask the gym whether it takes part.

If you are recovering from an injury or have a health condition, ask your doctor before you start a new program. Our guide to physical therapy and chiropractic lists local clinics.
