On this page
Almost every train and bus around Palo Alto takes the same payment: Clipper, the Bay Area's regional transit card. Caltrain, VTA, SamTrans, BART and the Dumbarton Express all accept it. Since December 2025 you can also skip the card and tap your own contactless bank card or phone. Stanford's Marguerite shuttle is the exception, because it is free and needs nothing at all.
This page explains how Clipper works now, what changed with the new system and what each type of rider pays in late 2026. For schedules and routes, see our guides to Caltrain and VTA buses and shuttles.
Three ways to pay
| Method | Cost to get | Discount fares? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contactless bank card or phone wallet | Free | No, adult fare only | Visitors and occasional riders |
| Adult Clipper card, plastic or in a phone wallet | $3 for plastic; virtual card free for a limited time with a $3 minimum load | No | Regular riders and monthly passes |
| Youth, Senior, Clipper START or Clipper Access card | Free | Yes | Anyone who qualifies for a lower fare |
Caltrain's Clipper FAQ lists those card costs and says the plastic card fee is waived when you order online with Autoload. Station ticket machines also sell adult Clipper cards and can load cash onto any card type. Caltrain machines still sell paper one-way tickets and day passes too.
Tap on, tap off
Caltrain charges by distance, so you tap at the platform validator before you board and again when you get off. Use the same card or phone both times. If you forget to tap off, Caltrain charges the maximum fare from your starting station. VTA and SamTrans buses charge a flat fare, so you tap once as you board.
A few habits avoid trouble. Take other contactless cards out of your wallet before you tap so the reader picks the right one. On an iPhone, turn on Express Transit for your chosen card. Each rider needs their own card or device.
Clipper 2.0: what changed and where it stands
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission launched Next Generation Clipper, often called Clipper 2.0, on December 10, 2025. It moved accounts to a cloud system and added several features:
- Tap to pay everywhere. All Clipper agencies, including Caltrain and VTA, began accepting chip-enabled debit and credit cards and phone wallets. BART had started in August 2025.
- Transfer discounts. After you pay full fare on the first agency, a second ride on a different agency within two hours gets up to $2.85 off. Bank card users get it right away. Older Clipper cards need to be upgraded first.
- Instant loading. Money added online shows up immediately instead of days later.
- Family accounts and online applications for Youth and Senior cards.
The rollout has been rocky. It was supposed to take eight to 12 weeks. In its July 24, 2026 update, MTC said more than 2.3 million cards had moved to the new system and that it handled 53 percent of Clipper trips in mid-July. More than 10 million older cards still needed to migrate and both systems were running side by side. The Clipper website itself carried an apology for bugs in the migration in late 2026. Upgraded cards show "TRAVEL OK" on validators instead of a balance, so check your balance in the app, online or at a ticket machine.
For a visitor the practical advice is to tap a bank card or phone and let Clipper's problems be someone else's. Residents with discount cards should keep using them until Clipper upgrades them or asks them to act. Clipper customer service is at (877) 878-8883.

Caltrain zone fares
Caltrain divides its line into six zones. Palo Alto, California Avenue, Menlo Park, San Antonio, Mountain View and Sunnyvale are all in Zone 3. San Francisco is Zone 1, Millbrae and Redwood City are Zone 2 and San Jose Diridon is Zone 4. You pay by the number of zones you touch, so a ride within Zone 3 is one zone and Palo Alto to San Francisco is three. These were the adult fares on Caltrain's fares page in late 2026, with the increases scheduled for January 1, 2027:
| Zones | Example from Palo Alto | Adult one-way now | From Jan. 1, 2027 | Adult day pass now | From Jan. 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mountain View, Menlo Park | $4.00 | $4.00 | $8.00 | $8.00 |
| 2 | Redwood City, Millbrae, San Jose Diridon | $6.25 | $6.50 | $12.50 | $13.00 |
| 3 | San Francisco, Capitol | $8.50 | $9.00 | $17.00 | $18.00 |
| 4 | Gilroy | $10.75 | $11.50 | $21.50 | $23.00 |
One-way tickets are good for four hours in one direction. A day pass costs twice the one-way fare and is sold only at ticket machines. Since January 1, 2026 every payment method pays the same Caltrain fare, so there is no longer a Clipper discount.
Monthly passes
Monthly passes are Clipper only. An adult three zone pass costs $204 now and $216 from January 1, 2027. Pass holders ride free across all zones on weekends and holidays, except Christmas Eve. Passes of two zones or more also earn credits on SamTrans only, not on VTA. From January 1, 2027, monthly pass holders must tap on and off for every ride, not only the first of the month. Keep at least $1.25 in cash value on the card to cover a missed tap-off.
Youth, senior and discount fares for 2026
Who qualifies
- Youth: ages 5 to 18, with a free Youth Clipper card.
- Senior: 65 and older, with a free Senior Clipper card.
- Clipper Access (formerly the RTC card): riders under 65 with qualifying disabilities. Caltrain also accepts a Medicare card or a DMV disabled person placard ID card for its Eligible Discount fare.
- Clipper START: adults 19 to 64 with qualifying low incomes, who get 50 percent off single rides on participating buses, trains and ferries.
The Clipper discounts page explains how to apply. Youth and Senior cards can be requested online, by mail or in person with proof of age. Discount fares need the discount card. A bank card or phone always pays adult fare, even for a child.
What discount riders pay
| Rider | Caltrain one-way | VTA single ride | VTA day pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult | $4.00 to $15.25 by zones | $2.50 | $7.50 |
| Youth | $1.00 any distance | $1.00 | $3.00 |
| Senior, disabled or Medicare | $2.00 for one zone, $4.00 for three | $1.25 | $3.75 |
| Clipper START | Half the adult fare | About $1.25 | Not listed |
Caltrain's Eligible Discount fares also rise on January 1, 2027 for two zones and more, for example from $4.00 to $4.50 for three zones. The youth fare stays at $1.00 one way and $2.00 for a day pass. A youth monthly pass costs $24 for any number of zones. VTA lets children under five ride free. Families with small children should check Caltrain's own page for its rule.
VTA, SamTrans and transfers
VTA's fare page lists a $2.50 adult single ride, with two hours of free transfers between VTA buses and light rail when you pay with Clipper. The day pass works as a cap: once your rides add up to $7.50 in a day, the rest are free. Express buses cost $5.00. Adults transferring from a local bus to an express pay the $2.50 difference. VTA listed no fare changes for 2026 or 2027.
SamTrans, which runs the ECR line north from the Palo Alto Transit Center, listed an adult fare of $2.25 cash or $2.05 on Clipper in October 2026. Caltrain also sells a VTA-Caltrain Day Pass that costs $7.50 more than a Caltrain day pass, which can suit a day mixing the train with VTA buses.
Sample fares from Palo Alto
- Palo Alto to San Francisco and back, adult: $17.00 by one-way fares or a $17.00 day pass in 2026. In 2027 a day pass costs $18.00.
- SFO to Palo Alto: BART to Millbrae, then Caltrain two zones south. The new transfer discount trims the second fare. Our SFO guide has the details.
- Palo Alto to Mountain View, senior: $2.00 one way on Caltrain with a Senior Clipper card.
- Downtown to Stanford: free on the Marguerite shuttle on weekdays.
- El Camino Real to San Jose, teen: $1.00 on VTA Rapid 522 with a Youth Clipper card.
Arriving with luggage late at night, when the trains thin out? A fixed price car can be easier than juggling transfers. You can book a meet and greet airport pickup before you fly.
Good to know
- A regional transit funding measure was on the November 2026 ballot. Caltrain has warned of service cuts without new money, which could affect schedules more than fares.
- Group trips: each rider needs their own card or device to tap. One bank card cannot pay for two people.
- Planning a car-free stay? Our car-free visit guide pulls trains, shuttles and walking together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Caltrain with a credit card?
Yes. Since December 10, 2025 you can tap a contactless debit or credit card or a phone wallet on the Clipper validators. Tap on before boarding and tap off when you leave the train with the same card. Bank cards always pay the adult fare.
How much is Caltrain from Palo Alto in 2026?
Palo Alto is in Zone 3. Adult one-way fares are $4.00 for one zone, $6.25 for two zones and $8.50 for three zones such as San Francisco. From January 1, 2027 the two and three zone fares rise to $6.50 and $9.00. The one zone fare stays at $4.00.
Do seniors and kids get discounts on Caltrain and VTA?
Yes, but only with the right Clipper card. Youth riders ages 5 to 18 pay $1 a ride on Caltrain and VTA. Seniors 65 and older pay about half fare. Bank cards and phones always charge the adult fare, so apply for a free Youth or Senior Clipper card.
What is Clipper 2.0?
It is the Bay Area's new cloud-based Clipper system, launched December 10, 2025. It added tap to pay with bank cards, instant card loading and a transfer discount of up to $2.85 between agencies. The switch from old cards has run months late, so both systems were still in use in mid-2026.
What happens if I forget to tap off on Caltrain?
Caltrain charges the maximum fare from the station where you tapped on. Always tap off at the platform validator when you get off, whether you use a Clipper card, a bank card or a phone.
