The Dish is Palo Alto's favorite workout with a view. Every day, crowds walk or run the paved loop through Stanford's foothills, past the big radio telescope that gives the trail its name. When they come back through the gate, the same question comes up: where to eat. The answer takes a little planning. The Dish sits where the College Terrace neighborhood meets Stanford land. The closest food is more than a mile away.
This guide lists the nearest options by direction, with the walking time from the main gate. Every business linked below has a page in our business directory, which shows hours as each place published them in October 2026. For the trail itself, including hours, gates and rules, see our guide to hiking the Stanford Dish.
What the Dish has and does not have
Stanford manages the Dish as research and conservation land, not a park. There is no cafe, no vending machine and no drinking fountain at any of the four gates. Stanford runs a portable restroom just inside the main gate during open hours as a pilot program. That is the extent of the facilities. Bring water, especially on warm afternoons, because the loop has almost no shade.
The four public gates are Stanford Gate at Stanford Avenue and Junipero Serra Boulevard, Frenchman's Gate and Gerona Gate farther along Junipero Serra. Piers Gate is on Alpine Road on the far side of the hills. This guide measures from Stanford Gate, where most people start.

Distances from the main gate
These are straight-line estimates. Walking along Stanford Avenue adds a little, so allow about 20 minutes per mile.
| Food area | Distance | On foot |
|---|---|---|
| El Camino Real at Stanford Avenue | About 1.2 miles | About 25 minutes |
| California Avenue, 400 block | About 1.3 miles | About 25 to 30 minutes |
| California Avenue, station end | About 1.5 miles | About 30 minutes |
| Stanford Barn on Welch Road | About 1.5 miles | About 30 minutes |
Most hikers drive or bike the last mile. Stanford Avenue is a residential street with sidewalks, so walking it is pleasant if you have the time.
El Camino Real at Stanford Avenue
Stanford Avenue runs from the Dish gate straight down through College Terrace to El Camino Real. The strip where it meets El Camino is the closest food to the trail.
- Starbucks at 2000 El Camino Real: open 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, with indoor and outdoor seating. It is the earliest coffee near the trail.
- The Good Salad: build-your-own salads with halal chicken and steak, open weekdays only, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Sundance The Steakhouse: a family-run steakhouse since 1974, with weekday lunch and dinner every night.
- Topi: a cake and dessert shop that opened in 2025, known for tea-flavored cakes, open from 11:30 a.m.
- Jack in the Box at 2280 El Camino Real: a drive-thru and lobby listed as open 24 hours, with breakfast all day.
- Panda Express at 2310 El Camino Real: bowls and plates from 8:30 a.m. daily.
Our College Terrace guide explains the neighborhood you walk through on the way, with its streets named for colleges.
California Avenue: the post-hike favorite
California Avenue is a little farther but has far more choice. It is where many Dish regulars end up, especially on weekends.
Coffee and breakfast
- ZombieRunner Coffee: a coffee shop that grew out of a trail running store, which suits the crowd coming off the hill. Open from 8 a.m. daily.
- Izzy's Brooklyn Bagels: a kosher bagel bakery with more than 30 kinds of bagels and lox sandwiches, open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day.
- Backyard Brew: a family-owned specialty coffee shop on the 400 block, serving espresso, cold brew and breakfast.
- Vitality Bowls: acai bowls and smoothies near the station, from 7:30 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends.
Brunch and lunch
La Bohème and Sun of Wolf both serve weekend brunch on the car-free blocks. Kali Greek Kitchen and Ramen Kowa cover a quick lunch every day. At the El Camino Real corner, Fambrini's Cafe serves all-day breakfast and big salads on a garden patio. It opens at 9:30 a.m. on weekdays and 10:30 a.m. on weekends and closes at 3 p.m.
On Sundays the California Avenue Farmers Market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., year-round, with bread, pastries and prepared food. A Dish loop followed by the market is a classic Palo Alto Sunday. Our California Avenue food guide covers the whole street.
The campus side
If you start at Gerona Gate, near Campus Drive East, Stanford's campus is the closer direction. Campus cafes keep a school schedule, though. Many close on weekends and between quarters. The most reliable weekday option on this side is Tootsie's at the Stanford Barn on Welch Road, an Italian-style cafe with espresso, pastries and panini, open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays only. Our guide to where visitors can eat on campus covers the student unions and their hours.
Coyote Hill Road and the research park
Stanford also points Dish visitors to street parking on Coyote Hill Road, inside Stanford Research Park. Food there is scarce, since most company cafeterias are closed to the public. The park's public cafe is a Coupa Café at The Hub on Porter Drive, which the park lists as open on weekdays. Our research park food guide has the details.
Timing your hike around food
Stanford sets the Dish hours by month. Daylight saving time ends on November 1, 2026. After that, closing times come early. Check the official Dish site for the current month.
- Dawn hikes. The gates open around sunrise. Starbucks on El Camino is already open at 5 a.m. Izzy's follows at 7 a.m.
- Weekend mid-morning. The busiest time on the trail and at the cafes. ZombieRunner and Izzy's both draw lines. Fambrini's opens at 10:30 a.m. on weekends.
- Late afternoon. Winter closing times come early. Plan dinner on California Avenue, where most kitchens reopen around 5 p.m.
- Weekdays. More options open, including The Good Salad and Tootsie's, both closed on weekends.
Eating before you hike
The loop takes most people 60 to 90 minutes and the climbs are steeper than they look from the road. A light snack beforehand helps, especially on an early start. Grab a bagel at Izzy's or a pastry and coffee at Starbucks on the way up Stanford Avenue, then save the bigger meal for afterward. Carry your trash out. Never feed the wildlife. Coyotes are seen often and Stanford asks visitors to keep their distance.
If you are hiking with children, pack more water and snacks than you think you need. The nearest store is back on El Camino Real, so a forgotten water bottle means a long walk down and back up again.
Good to know
- Bring water. There is no fountain or food at any Dish gate.
- Dogs are not allowed on the Dish. Fambrini's says dogs are welcome on its patio if one is with you for the day.
- Street parking near Stanford Gate fills early on weekend mornings. Many people park once on California Avenue, eat there and bike up.
- Directory hours are as each business published them in October 2026. Check before you go.
Visiting from out of town
For visitors, a sunrise Dish loop is one of the best free things to do in Palo Alto. Staying on El Camino Real puts you a short drive from the gate and within walking distance of breakfast. You can compare hotels on El Camino Real near California Avenue and Stanford.
