Mitchell Park is the largest park in south Palo Alto and one of the busiest in the city. Families come for the Magical Bridge Playground, dog owners for the fenced dog run and students for the Mitchell Park Library on the park's Middlefield Road side. What the park does not have is a row of restaurants at its gate. Food here comes from one nonprofit cafe, a small shopping strip a few minutes south and a handful of places a little farther out.

This guide covers all of them by distance. Every business linked below has a page in our business directory, with hours as each place published them in October 2026. Hours change, so check before you set out. For the park itself, see our Mitchell Park guide.

Ada's Cafe: inside the library building

Ada's Cafe is the only food inside the park's footprint. It sits in the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center, the LEED Platinum building that opened in December 2014. The cafe is a nonprofit that trains and employs people with developmental disabilities. It serves breakfast, lunch and espresso drinks.

Its listed hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays. That makes it a natural first stop on a weekend morning: coffee and a pastry, then a walk out to the playground. The library itself opens at 10 a.m., so the cafe is the only door open early. Our Mitchell Park Library guide covers the building, its hours and its children's area.

Charleston Center: the closest strip

A few minutes south along Middlefield Road, the Charleston Shopping Center covers most everyday needs. It is about a 5 to 8 minute walk from the playground. Everything here shares one parking lot, so a family can split up and meet back at the car.

  • Peet's Coffee: the chain's coffeebar at 3904 Middlefield Road, opening at 5 a.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. on weekends.
  • Mountain Mike's: a family pizza parlor with dine-in, carryout, delivery and a party room. It lists hours until 2 a.m. Tuesday to Sunday.
  • Rick's Ice Cream: an ice cream shop dating to 1956, now run by the founders of Pints of Joy, with classic flavors alongside Indian-inspired ones.
  • Subway: a sandwich shop at 3962 Middlefield Road with breakfast and catering, open from 8 a.m. on weekdays.
  • Piazza's Fine Foods: a family-run grocery founded by John Piazza in 1979, with house-made sausages, a full deli and catering. It is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Rick's is the classic way to end a playground afternoon. Ask what is dairy-free that day, since the flavor list rotates.

Packing a picnic

Mitchell Park was built for picnics, with wide lawns, shade trees and tables near the playgrounds. Piazza's deli is the obvious place to stock up. Sandwiches, salads and cold drinks travel easily back to the park in a few minutes.

  • Reserved sites. The city takes group picnic reservations at only three parks, Mitchell among them. Reservations are for residents and open up to six months ahead.
  • First come, first served. Unreserved tables are free. Weekend afternoons in spring and summer fill early, so arrive before noon if you want shade.
  • Pack out. Bins fill quickly on busy days. Bring a bag for your trash.

Our playgrounds guide compares Magical Bridge with other play spaces around town if you want to make a day of it.

Dinner within a short drive

Mitchell Park sits in a residential pocket, so most dinners mean a short drive or bike ride. Three directions work well.

San Antonio Road

Dohatsuten is a Japanese ramen kitchen and izakaya at 799 San Antonio Road, about 0.7 mile from the park. It serves slow-simmered broths, a build-your-own ramen and small plates. A Taco Bell on East Charleston Road, a little farther, lists a drive-thru open until 1 or 2 a.m.

South El Camino Real

The 3700 to 4200 blocks of El Camino Real are about a mile west. This stretch has more variety than anywhere else in south Palo Alto.

  • So Gong Dong Tofu House: a family-run Korean restaurant with 16 versions of soft tofu soup.
  • Hobee's Restaurant: the Palo Alto branch of a Bay Area breakfast and lunch chain dating to 1974. Closed Mondays.
  • Fuki Sushi: a Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar and private tatami rooms.
  • Celia's Mexican Restaurant: combination plates and fajitas, open from 11 a.m. daily.
  • State of Mind Slice House: slices and whole pies, including gluten-free crusts.

Midtown

About 1.4 miles north on Middlefield Road, Midtown has Kirk's Steakburgers, two taquerias and a Thai and Vietnamese restaurant. Our Midtown food guide lists them block by block.

Picking a stop by the kind of visit

A weekday morning with toddlers. Coffee at Ada's from 7:30 a.m., then the playground before it gets busy. Note that Ada's is closed on Mondays, so use Peet's that day.

A school-age birthday at the park. Order pizzas from Mountain Mike's for pickup and finish with cones from Rick's. Mountain Mike's also lists a party room if the weather turns.

A dog walk. Peet's lists indoor seating, but dogs are best kept to outdoor spots. Bring water for the dog run, since the walk back from the strip can be warm in summer.

A library afternoon. Study inside, then take a break at Ada's. The library stays open until 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 6 p.m. Friday to Sunday.

Event days

Mitchell Park hosts some of the city's biggest community events. On the Fourth of July it is home to the city's Chili Cook Off, which brings food vendors, music and crowds. On days like that, parking near the park fills and the Charleston Center lot gets busy. Walk or bike in if you can. Our Chili Cook-off guide explains how the day works.

Parking and getting there

The park has its own lots off East Meadow Drive and beside the library on Middlefield Road. The Charleston Center has a shared surface lot. Most families who live nearby walk or bike. The park is close to the Bryant Street bike boulevard. Adobe Creek runs along one edge of the park.

Good to know
