On the third Monday in January, Palo Alto treats the King holiday as a day on, not a day off. In the morning, volunteers of all ages fan out to service projects around town. In the afternoon, they gather at the Mitchell Park Community Center to share what they did and to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with speakers and performances. Around them, Stanford holds a multifaith service in Memorial Church, East Palo Alto runs its own day of service and a celebration train rolls up the Peninsula toward San Francisco.

This guide covers the local day of service, its history, the most recent confirmed program and other events nearby. MLK Day 2027 falls on Monday, January 18. The 2027 program had not been posted as of November 1, 2026. For the rest of the month, see our January guide.

Palo Alto's day of service

The local day of service is run by Youth Community Service, a local nonprofit that organizes volunteer work for young people. It is listed on the City of Palo Alto's events calendar as a city holiday event. The format is two parts. Service projects run in the morning at sites around town. A community gathering follows in the afternoon to celebrate the service and legacy of Dr. King.

Everything is free. Registration for service projects is online through the YCS website. The 2026 flyers came in English and Spanish. YCS lists projects for all ages, so families with children can volunteer together.

History of the local observance

The city and YCS have marked the holiday together at Mitchell Park since at least 2019. The Palo Alto Daily Post's 2019 roundup, published for what would have been King's 90th birthday, listed a City of Palo Alto and Youth Community Service event at 10 a.m. at the Mitchell Park Community Center, with guest speakers, activities for kids and teens, music and dance and an exhibit on the civil rights movement. The same year, Palo Alto Vineyard Church, Palo Alto First Christian Church and University AME Zion Church organized a prayer walk from Crossroads Community Church on Middlefield Road.

The program has since shifted toward hands-on service in the morning and a gathering in the afternoon. Neither the city nor YCS publishes a founding year for the event, so we do not give one.

The holiday also has a direct local link. On April 14, 1967, King delivered his speech "The Other America" in Stanford's Memorial Auditorium, a year before his death. University AME Zion Church, founded in 1918, is the oldest Black church in Palo Alto. Our African American history guide tells more of that story.

At Stanford

Stanford marks the holiday with a weekend of events listed on its MLK Day site. In 2026 the centerpiece was the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. MultiFaith Celebration, held during University Public Worship in Memorial Church on Sunday, January 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Later that week Stanford hosted a fireside chat with three faculty members, in person and online, with registration required. Stanford's 2027 lineup had not been posted as of November 1, 2026.

For families and teens

The day suits families well. Youth Community Service focuses on getting young people involved. Its 2026 projects were open to all ages. A morning project followed by the afternoon gathering makes a full but manageable day for school-age kids. The Magical Bridge Playground next door is a reward at the end. Bring a picnic if the weather is kind, since the park has plenty of lawn and the gathering starts right after lunch.

A simple plan for a family:

  1. In December: watch for the YCS sign-up and register everyone in your group.
  2. The weekend before: talk with children about who Dr. King was and why the day is about service. The library's picture books and biographies help.
  3. Monday morning: do your service project, with snacks and water in your bag.
  4. Monday afternoon: head to the Mitchell Park gathering at 2 p.m. and stay for the program.

Teens who enjoy the day can keep going. Our teen volunteering guide lists groups that welcome young volunteers through the rest of the year, with the minimum ages each one sets.

Tips for the day

  • Sign up early. Popular service projects fill, especially those suited to young children.
  • Dress in layers. January mornings are cool and some projects may be outdoors.
  • Check closures. City offices and many services close for the holiday. Our holiday closures guide lists what is open.
  • Check Caltrain's holiday schedule if you plan to join the celebration train or head to San Francisco.
  • Keep volunteering. Our volunteering guide lists groups that need help the rest of the year.

Getting to Mitchell Park

The Mitchell Park Community Center shares a building with the Mitchell Park Library at 3700 Middlefield Road in south Palo Alto. Its parking lot off Middlefield Road fills during big community events, so allow time or come by bike along the city's bike boulevards. Our guide to Mitchell Park and Magical Bridge Playground covers the park next door, a good place for kids to burn off energy after the gathering. Visitors from out of town can compare hotels in Palo Alto for the long weekend.
