About Telefèric Barcelona

Telefèric Barcelona is a Spanish restaurant at Town & Country Village, the shopping center on El Camino Real across from Stanford. It is part of a restaurant group founded in 1992 by the Padrosa family in Sant Cugat del Vallès, a town outside Barcelona. The group still lists the original Sant Cugat restaurant and a Barcelona location, along with a string of American restaurants. The Palo Alto restaurant opened in 2019.

In the US, the group lists a flagship in Walnut Creek plus restaurants in Palo Alto, Los Gatos, the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Roseville, La Jolla and Newport Beach, along with Scottsdale, Arizona. The Palo Alto room was designed by Trenchs Studio, which the restaurant notes also designed El Celler de Can Roca, a three-Michelin-star restaurant in Spain. It has an open kitchen and an outdoor patio facing the center.

Paella and tapas are the core of the menu. The restaurant makes seven kinds of paella with bomba rice from Valencia and saffron from La Mancha. Paella is a dish for sharing, so it suits a table of two or more. Paellas are cooked to order. The Palo Alto page lists a lobster paella with gulf shrimp and octopus, a black paella made with squid ink, a mixta with pork belly, chicken and shrimp, an all-pork ibérico paella and a fully plant-based veggie paella. A large-format Fiesta Paella with lobster and ribeye is built for a whole table.

The restaurant suggests ordering three tapas per person, or four for a fuller meal. Best sellers on its page include patatas bravas, pan con tomate, grilled Spanish octopus with potato cream, crab croquetas and tuna tacos in wonton shells. The restaurant hand-carves jamón ibérico de bellota from Extremadura, the acorn-fed Spanish ham.

For people who want a set meal, the restaurant offers a Taste of Barcelona prix-fixe menu with nine tapas and a dessert. It has no group minimum, so even two people can order it. The full Palo Alto menu is posted on the restaurant's website. For a celebration, the restaurant also sells add-ons such as a cava toast.

Dietary notes

The veggie paella, made with shiitake mushrooms, broccolini, snow peas and Piquillo peppers, is the restaurant's fully plant-based main. Several tapas, such as pan con tomate and patatas bravas, contain no meat. Many dishes use seafood or pork, so tell your server about allergies or restrictions when you order.

Wine and drinks

The wine list has more than 200 Spanish wines, chosen by Catalan sommeliers. The restaurant runs happy hour Monday to Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m., with a discount on cocktails. It also hosts experiences such as wine tastings and flamenco nights across its locations, so check the website for events in Palo Alto.

El Merkat

Next door to the restaurant is El Merkat, Telefèric's own Spanish market. It sells imported olive oils, Manchego cheese, ibérico ham, conservas (high-quality canned seafood) and other pantry staples from Spain. It also sells paella kits so you can cook the dish at home. It is a good stop for a food gift or for stocking up after a meal.
