About Roost and Roast
Roost and Roast is a Thai restaurant in Town & Country Village that describes itself as a Thai-inspired chicken shop. The specialty is southern Hat Yai-style fried chicken, named for the city of Hat Yai in southern Thailand, served alongside what the restaurant calls Thai street-side favorites. It also describes its cooking as a blend of Asian flavors with fresh, local ingredients.
The restaurant has two locations. The Palo Alto shop is at 855 El Camino Real, Suite 157. The second is inside the Kurated Kitchens food hall at 155 East Maude Avenue in Sunnyvale. Roost and Roast says it was created by the Kurated Kitchens Restaurant Group, which also runs that food hall. The Sunnyvale counter keeps weekday daytime hours only, so the Palo Alto shop is the one to visit in the evening or on weekends.
What is on the menu
The menu is organized into a handful of clear sections. Spice levels are marked for many dishes, which helps if you are cautious with heat.
Hat Yai fried chicken
Bone-in fried chicken is the signature. It comes as a three-piece plate over rice with cucumbers, pickled carrots and daikon and crispy shallots, or as two pieces with papaya salad and roti. Another combo pairs the chicken with rice, roti and massaman curry. For groups, there are buckets of 8, 12 or 16 drumsticks and thighs with a choice of sauces.
Curry bowls
Four curries come with a choice of protein, vegetables and jasmine rice: a medium red curry, a mild pineapple yellow curry, a hot green curry and a mild massaman curry.
Rice and salad bowls
Two chicken bowls are served over rice or spring mix. Gai yang is Thai-style barbecue chicken thigh marinated for 24 hours. The lemongrass chicken is slow roasted in lemongrass and coconut milk. Fried tofu in a house lemongrass chili sauce is the meatless option.
Wok dishes and small bites
Wok-tossed classics include pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, spicy basil fried rice and pad kra pow, a Thai basil stir fry topped with a fried egg. Small bites include roti with curry dip, popcorn chicken, papaya salad, chili cucumber salad and crispy vegetable spring rolls. Menus change, so check the restaurant's site for today's options.
Vegetarian options
Vegetarians have a reasonable choice for a chicken shop. The menu lists vegetarian pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, spicy basil fried rice and pad kra pow made with fried tofu. The yellow curry served with roti is marked vegetarian. Several vegetarian dishes include egg, so vegans should ask before ordering.
Ordering and catering
Everyday orders for pickup or delivery go through the Order Now page, with no minimum and no lead time. Catering runs through a shared Kurated Kitchens platform linked from the restaurant's website. It offers party trays, individually boxed meals and labeled items for offices and events. Catering pickup has no minimum. The restaurant encourages ordering direct so you can ask the kitchen about ingredients and dietary restrictions. For catering questions, call or text 408-617-5564 or email the catering address on the website.
Who it suits
Roost and Roast is a strong fit for a casual lunch, a quick dinner on the way home or a shared meal with friends who like fried chicken. The bowls are built as complete single meals, with rice, pickles and a sauce, which makes them easy for a desk lunch. The buckets and catering trays suit team meetings, game-day gatherings and family dinners. People who cannot handle much spice can stick to the mild yellow or massaman curries and choose their own sauce on the side for the chicken.
