About Tennis Town & Country

Tennis Town & Country is an independent racquet sports shop at Town & Country Village, one of Palo Alto's main shopping centers. The shop says it has been locally owned and family operated since 2009. The village's own directory lists it in Building 3, Suite 99. It describes the shop as offering personalized service for all your tennis and pickleball needs.

It is a specialist store rather than a general sporting goods shop. The focus is on racquets, strings, shoes and the service work that keeps a racquet playing well. The shop now uses the website paloaltotennisshop.com. Its older tennistownandcountry.com address no longer shows the store's site. The village listing says the shop has served players there for more than ten years. It sells to beginners and experienced players alike, with help choosing gear for each customer's game and level.

What it sells

The shop sells name-brand racquets, footwear, clothing and accessories. Town & Country Village lists racquets, string, apparel, shoes, accessories and tennis supplies, with staff on hand to recommend equipment that suits each player.

Pickleball has a large section. The shop's website lists paddles from these brands:

  • Selkirk, CRBN and Engage
  • Holbrook, Pro Kennex and Veloz
  • Adidas, Head, Babolat and Wilson

That spread lets players compare paddles from pickleball specialists alongside models from the big tennis brands. The website includes product pages for individual paddles, such as the Selkirk Vanguard Pro Invikta, the JOOLA Hyperion Pro 3S and the Veloz Ellipse, so you can read the specifications before you visit. Stock changes often, so call ahead if you want a particular model.

Stringing and racquet services

Service work is where a specialist shop earns its place. Tennis Town & Country lists these services:

  1. Stringing for tennis, squash and racquetball racquets.
  2. Racquet customization. The shop uses a Baiardo Tune Pro to measure weight, balance, swing weight and the bending properties of a frame.
  3. Evaluation of older frames. Staff check older racquets for changes in vibration or flexibility and advise on restoring them.
  4. Regripping with overgrips or replacement grips from major brands. This is usually done on the spot with no appointment.

Ask staff how often to restring for the way you play and which string suits your game. Bring the racquet you use now if you are shopping for a new one, so the shop can compare the two.

Before you bring a racquet in

A little preparation makes a stringing or customization visit faster:

  • Know your current setup. Note the string and tension you have now if you know them. If you liked how the racquet played, staff can match it.
  • Bring every racquet you use in matches. If you rotate two frames, having both on hand lets the shop compare them.
  • Check your grip. If the handle feels slick or worn, ask for a new overgrip while you are there. It is usually a quick job.
  • Plan around play. If you have a league match or tournament coming up, drop the racquet off early in the week rather than the day before.
  • Bring your shoes when you shop for new ones, so you can compare fit and wear.

Who it suits

The shop suits league and club players who need reliable stringing, juniors moving up to a full-size racquet and anyone who has picked up pickleball and wants to try paddles in person. Parents shopping for a child's first racquet can ask staff to help choose one. Squash and racquetball players can also bring racquets in for stringing.
