About Going In Style

Going In Style is a travel accessories and luggage store inside Stanford Shopping Center. It also runs an online shop. Its website is built around the questions travelers ask before a trip: which plug works in which country, what fits in a carry-on and how to keep a passport and cash safe on the road.

The store gives its address as 609 Stanford Shopping Center. Its banner names the luggage brands it carries in person: Briggs & Riley, Tumi, Pacsafe, Lipault and Travelpro. If you are flying out of SFO or San Jose soon and need a bag, an adapter or a neck pillow, it is worth a stop before the trip.

What the store sells

Travel adapters are the headline. The website says it carries adapters for every country in the world. It sorts them by country, by region and by the most popular destinations. Product categories go well beyond plugs:

  • Electrics: adapters, power accessories, voltage converters and dual-voltage appliances for hair and clothing care, plus tech accessories and travel lights.
  • Luggage: rolling bags, carry-ons, checked suitcases and luggage accessories. Online brands also include Baggallini, Delsey, Eagle Creek and Victorinox.
  • Packing organizers: packing cubes and folders, toiletry and cosmetic kits, jewelry and pill organizers.
  • Money and ID holders: RFID-blocking wallets, hidden pockets, waist and neck money belts and passport holders.
  • Travel comforts: pillows, blankets, ear and eye accessories, travel-size bath products and health and safety items.
  • Travel clothing: men's and women's lines including ExOfficio and Royal Robbins, plus travel laundry supplies.
  • Books and games: Rick Steves guidebooks, maps, travel journals and games.

Travel advice on the website

The store's website doubles as a reference shelf. It has explainers on adapters versus converters, grounded versus ungrounded plugs and dual-voltage appliances, along with short videos on the plugs used in the UK, India, China and Israel. Other pages cover packing checklists, carry-on rules, TSA regulations, money belts and getting to Bay Area airports. Reading the adapter guide before you go in will help you ask the right question, especially if you are traveling with a hair dryer or other high-wattage device that may need a converter and not just an adapter.

Finding the store

The center's directory places Going In Style on the main level in the corridor next to J.Jill, across from Currency Exchange International. It names the Sand Hill Road entrance off London Plane Way as the closest way in. The store's own directions page places it in the inner circle at the northeast corner of the center, describing it as next to J. Jill and near Backcountry and Restoration Hardware. Store lineups at the center change, so the center's own interactive map is the surest way to find the door. For parking, the store recommends the lot near Pottery Barn off London Plane Way. It also posts a short video showing where to park.

The store's website also notes that Stanford Shopping Center is generally dog friendly. Leashed, well-behaved dogs can walk the outdoor common areas, but stores that sell food cannot allow pets, so check each shop's policy before you walk in with a dog. Our Stanford Shopping Center guide covers the layout, dining and parking in more detail.

Tips for visiting

Posted hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The store closes at 6 p.m. every day, so do not plan an evening run for a last-minute adapter. If you only need a specific item, the online shop lets you check what exists before the trip. The store's phone line is 650-326-2066.

If you are set on one luggage brand, it can help to compare: Briggs & Riley also has its own store at Town & Country Village, less than a mile south on El Camino Real. Bring a list of every country on your itinerary and every device you plan to charge. Staff can then match adapters in one pass rather than guessing. If you are flying soon, our guides to getting to San Francisco International Airport and San Jose airport cover the trip from Palo Alto.
