About Alo at Stanford Shopping Center

Alo is a yoga and activewear brand with roots in Southern California. Its Palo Alto store is inside Stanford Shopping Center. The company calls its shops Sanctuaries and describes them as "the heart and soul of our brand." This is a chain location, so the racks follow the national collections. What the store adds is a place on the Peninsula to try pieces on before you buy.

According to a KRON4 report, Alo was founded in 2007 by Danny Harris and Marco DeGeorge and opened its first store in Beverly Hills in 2016. The Stanford store came later. Alo announced it on its own blog as part of a run of September openings, describing the location as "almost directly in between San Francisco and San Jose" and presenting it as a step in building the brand's NorCal presence. A more recent KRON4 story about a new Alo store in downtown Burlingame named Palo Alto as one of the brand's three existing Bay Area stores, alongside Santa Clara and Walnut Creek.

Finding the store

Alo's announcement gives the address as 180 El Camino Real, Building BB, Suite 1130A. That is the shopping center's street address plus the store's building and suite. The center's own directory places Alo on the main level along the Garden Walk, near Bloomingdale's. For the easiest way in from the parking lots, the directory points to the Stanford Shopping Center Way entrance, near Alo and L'Occitane en Provence.

The center is an open-air mall, so you walk outdoors between stores. Our Stanford Shopping Center guide covers parking, dining and how the walkways fit together. Visitors without a car can walk from the Palo Alto Caltrain station in roughly 15 minutes along Quarry Road or El Camino Real.

What the store sells

Alo's website describes its range as yoga and workout apparel and accessories for women and men. Leggings, tights, capris and loungewear make up the core of the line. The brand says its pieces are "wear-tested by yogis" and pitches them as clothes for "studio to street." In practice that means pieces meant for a class that also work for errands afterward.

The brand has grown well past clothing. Its site also sells haircare, skincare, bodycare, home essentials and supplements. An Alo blog post about new store openings said its shops carry the brand's clean beauty products so customers can see them in person. The same post said the stores let shoppers test performance styles before buying. Stock varies by store and by season, so call ahead if you want a particular item or size. Staff can check what is on the floor.

Programs, events and gift cards

Several Alo programs reach beyond the shop floor. The brand's website lists Alo Gives and the ALO Foundation, its charitable programs, along with an events page, a Pro Program and ALO Access. The ALO Wellness Club links to Alo Moves, the brand's online class platform. Gift cards are sold through the website, which also has a balance lookup.

Alo has written that its stores are meant to help customers "get plugged into a new community" and that they host opening parties and in-person events. Event plans differ from store to store, so ask the Stanford team whether anything is scheduled during your visit.

Tips for visiting

The center's directory lists Alo's hours as 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, which matches the center's regular hours. Alo's launch post gave slightly different opening times, so confirm on the center's Alo listing or call 650-331-3238 before a special trip. Holiday hours at the center run later.

Parking spaces near the department stores fill first on weekend afternoons, so a weekday visit is usually calmer. If you are comparing activewear, you can cover a lot in one trip. The center also has lululemon, Vuori, On and New Balance stores, plus Barry's, SoulCycle and YogaSix studios if you want a workout first. For outdoor miles in your new gear, the Stanford Dish loop is a short drive away. Our Palo Alto shopping guide covers the city's other shopping districts.
