A good family hotel in Palo Alto comes down to space and food. Rooms downtown are often small and restaurants fill up early on weekends. A suite with a kitchen, a free breakfast and a pool can save a trip with young children, especially on a long Stanford visit or a hospital stay. Palo Alto has fewer of these than a resort town, but the right choices exist, mostly on El Camino Real and just over the city line.
This guide picks hotels whose own pages list family features: suites, kitchens, pools, cribs, connecting rooms or free breakfast. Details come from our hotel profiles, which link to each hotel's source. We also note the kid attractions closest to each area. For live rates, search family hotels near Stanford and filter for kitchens or suites.

Suites with full kitchens
For a stay of more than two or three nights, a kitchen changes everything. You can feed a toddler on their schedule, keep milk cold and skip the restaurant wait.
Homewood Suites by Hilton Palo Alto at the south end of El Camino Real is the only all-suite, full-kitchen hotel inside the city limits on our list. Hilton lists a free hot breakfast buffet, an outdoor pool, cribs and confirmed connecting rooms on request. Dogs and cats are allowed too, which helps families traveling with a pet.
Two Marriott Residence Inns sit just over the line. The Residence Inn Palo Alto Los Altos, a short walk from Homewood, has all suites with fully equipped kitchens, family-friendly suite layouts, a free hot breakfast and an outdoor pool with a whirlpool. Note that guests must be at least 21 to check in. The Residence Inn Palo Alto Mountain View also has full kitchens and a free hot breakfast. Booking sites show sofa beds in many suites and Marriott lists children's recreation among its amenities. It does not list a pool.
These hotels sit close to Mitchell Park and its Magical Bridge Playground, a few minutes' drive away.
Near Stanford: suites and an all-inclusive
The Clement, across from Stanford on El Camino Real, is the most family-proof hotel near campus. Every unit is a suite. The hotel lists one-bedroom suites of 575 to 625 square feet and two-bedroom suites of 1,000 to 1,250 square feet, booked by email. Meals, snacks, drinks and valet parking are part of the rate. A pantry stays stocked around the clock, which matters when a child is hungry at 9 p.m. The heated rooftop pool has cabanas.
Downtown, the Graduate by Hilton Palo Alto lists Family Suites, connecting rooms and cribs on request, a short walk from Caltrain and University Avenue. Hilton lists childcare and a kids menu as not available and the hotel has no pool. It works best for a city-style family weekend built around walking and eating out.

Pools and room to roam
Children often judge a hotel by its pool. The Hilton Garden Inn Palo Alto has the only indoor hotel pool we found in Palo Alto, useful in the rainy months. Hilton also lists cribs, connecting rooms and a kids menu at The Kitchen at Palo Alto, the hotel restaurant.
The Creekside Inn has a heated outdoor pool that the hotel says is open year-round, set among gardens by Matadero Creek. Its junior and one-bedroom suites have kitchenettes and rooms come with a mini-fridge and microwave.
The Crowne Plaza Palo Alto, the old Cabana, has the biggest pool deck on El Camino Real, with a whirlpool and cabanas for rent. IHG lists pool hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Next door, Dinah's Garden Hotel has an outdoor pool, ponds, free parking and the Railroad Baron Suite, with an electric train running around the ceiling. Train-mad children will remember it. For the full list, see our guide to hotels with pools.
A splurge with kid touches
Across San Francisquito Creek in East Palo Alto, the Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley lists kids' welcome amenities and children's toiletries, a heated rooftop pool open year-round and all-day in-room dining. Downtown Palo Alto is about a mile and a half away along University Avenue. It suits a special weekend or a commencement trip with grandparents in tow.

Booking tips for families
- Ask for cribs when you book. Hotels keep a limited supply. Some offer no rollaway beds at all.
- Request connecting rooms in writing. They are usually confirmed only at check-in.
- Check the check-in age. A few hotels require the person checking in to be 21.
- Count breakfast. A free hot breakfast for four is worth a lot in an expensive restaurant town.
- Book early for June. Stanford commencement weekend runs June 10 to 13 in 2027 and family-size rooms go first.
Good to know
- Homewood Suites and both Residence Inns have full kitchens in every suite.
- The Hilton Garden Inn has an indoor pool.
- The Clement's two-bedroom suites are booked by email.
- The Junior Museum and Zoo closes at 4:30 p.m. from November 1, 2026.
For larger groups or long stays, a rental home with several bedrooms can work out better than two hotel rooms. Palo Alto has its own rules on short stays, so read our vacation rentals guide first, then browse family homes on Vrbo for stays of a month or more.
