Coatue is not a classic Sand Hill Road venture partnership. It is a New York investment firm that started as a hedge fund and grew into one of the largest investors in private technology companies. Its website lists five offices. One of them is at 2885 Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, a few doors from Rosewood Sand Hill and next to some of the best known names in venture capital. Founders in Palo Alto increasingly meet Coatue in later rounds, especially in AI.

This profile is a neutral explainer. It relies on Coatue's website, read in November 2026, plus SEC filings and news reports for fund sizes. The firm publishes few figures, so we date every number. For how venture and growth funds differ, start with our venture capital guide.

Founding in 1999

Philippe Laffont founded Coatue in 1999. Before that he worked as an analyst at Tiger Management, the hedge fund firm whose alumni are often called the Tiger Cubs. Coatue launched its first fund that year to invest in public technology, media and telecom stocks. Thomas Laffont is described in published profiles as a co-founder who leads the firm's private investing. Coatue's homepage now shows him as a co-author on many of its deal announcements.

The move into private companies came gradually. SEC filings show a Coatue Private Fund I of about $300 million in 2013 and a second private fund of about $500 million in 2015. By 2019 the firm had launched a dedicated early-stage venture fund.

The San Francisco office, in the Transamerica Pyramid on Montgomery Street, covers the city's startups.

How Coatue invests

Coatue's homepage splits its work into private and public strategies:

  • Venture: investing in early-stage startups, using the firm's network "to identify major trends early."
  • Growth: investing in late-stage companies it sees as potential disruptors and next generation platforms.
  • Tactical: structuring debt and equity solutions for companies with specific needs.
  • CTEK: a vehicle that invests across public and private markets. Coatue says information on its Coatue Innovation Fund is available through a separate CTEK website.
  • Public: public equities, the firm's original business.

For founders, the venture and growth strategies are what matter. In practice Coatue is best known for large growth rounds in fast-scaling companies. Its 2026 posts announced investments in Databricks and Instinct and a continued partnership with Anthropic. It also published a piece on Supabase, a database company popular with AI developers.

Research as a calling card

Coatue publishes research and presentations, including a public markets update deck and a series it calls C:\Takes. Its annual East Meets West conference, known as EMW, brings together founders and investors. The firm posts keynote decks and replays from past years on its website. Those materials are a useful window into how the partners think about AI, valuations and public markets.

Funds and scale

Coatue does not list fund sizes on its website. Published figures include:

FundYearReported size
Coatue Private Fund I2013About $300 million
Coatue Private Fund II2015About $500 million
Coatue Kona III2017About $1.3 billion
Coatue Early Stage Fund2019About $700 million (The Information)
Coatue Growth Fund IV2020About $3.5 billion (SEC Form D)

Wikipedia, citing the firm's SEC Form ADV, put total assets at about $70 billion in early 2022. Most of that sits in public market funds and the figure has certainly changed since. We found no confirmed newer total and do not estimate one.

Companies Coatue features

Coatue says its active private portfolio includes more than 250 technology companies. Its privates page features 30 of them, with a note that they are examples and not representative of every investment. Grouped loosely:

How founders approach Coatue

Coatue does not publish a pitch inbox or an application form. Its website lists a media email, a talent email for job seekers and an investor login. That reflects how the firm works. It usually invests after other firms have backed a company. Its partners spend much of their time on research and reaching out to companies themselves.

  • Stage check. If you are pre-revenue, a seed fund is a better first stop. Coatue's venture strategy exists, but its best known work is in later rounds.
  • Introductions. Existing investors are the usual bridge. Coatue often co-invests with established venture firms.
  • Read the research. The firm's published decks and posts show which themes it is chasing. Speak to those themes when you meet.
  • Know the terms. Growth rounds can include structure that matters later. Our term sheet guide explains the basics.

Local notes: Sand Hill Road practicalities

There is no train on Sand Hill Road. Stanford's free Marguerite S line runs on weekdays from the Palo Alto Transit Center along the road to the Rosewood, which is a short walk from 2885. Otherwise take a rideshare or drive. Office parking is private, so use the visitor spaces you are given.

Rosewood Sand Hill is the obvious place to sit down before or after a meeting. Madera serves breakfast and dinner and the bar is open to outside guests. Book ahead on weekday mornings. The Sand Hill Sundeck at the 3000 Sand Hill Road campus is another option for coffee or lunch on weekdays. Check its hours before you go.
