Palo Alto does not have a big culinary school, but it does have several good places to learn to cook for an evening. A national kitchen store at Town & Country Village runs a steady calendar of hands-on classes. The public adult school turns a Paly classroom into a teaching kitchen on weeknights. A downtown chocolate shop runs one of the more unusual workshops on the Peninsula. Stanford's continuing education program adds courses on food and drink for anyone who wants theory with their tasting.
This guide covers classes for adults that we confirmed on official pages in October 2026. Menus and dates change every month, so treat the examples below as a guide to the format and book through each provider. For children's cooking and craft programs, see our classes for kids.

Sur La Table at Town & Country Village
Sur La Table is at 855 El Camino Real, Suite 57, inside Town & Country Village across from Paly. It is a chain kitchen store, but the classes are what set it apart. Each student works at a dedicated station with tools and ingredients provided, follows a chef instructor and then eats what they made. You take home the recipes.
- Public classes. Book a seat for yourself or for two. The store page links to the current class calendar under its culinary classes button, with the menu, price and length for each.
- Private classes. The brand says groups of 10 to 30 people can book a private cooking experience for team building, client events or birthdays.
- Gift cards. Gift cards can be used for classes, which makes a class an easy present.
Store hours are listed as 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Parking in the Town & Country lot is free, though it fills at dinnertime. Arrive a few minutes early so you are at your station when the instructor starts. Check the Palo Alto store page for the class calendar.

Bring containers for leftovers, since several instructors send food home.
Chocolate making at Timothy Adams
Timothy Adams Chocolates at 539 Bryant Street makes small-batch truffles decorated with patterns from the owners' button collection. Its Chocolate Workshop starts with a glass of prosecco and a plate of local cheese and fruit, moves to a tasting of chocolates from around the world and ends with everyone in aprons making hand-rolled bonbons to take home. Non-alcoholic drinks are available.
- Small groups: seven or fewer guests join a Saturday session at 1 p.m. that runs about 90 minutes.
- Private groups: 8 to 12 guests get 90 minutes. Groups of 13 to 36 or more get two hours. Private sessions run Tuesday to Friday between 1 and 6 p.m.
- Price: $120 per person including tax and gratuity, paid in full at booking. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead for a full refund.
Downtown parking is free after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends in the city garages, which makes a Saturday session easy. Pair it with dinner from our date night guide.
Stanford Continuing Studies
Stanford Continuing Studies lists food and drink among its course areas, alongside wellness courses on nutrition. These tend to mix history, science and tasting rather than hands-on knife work. Some run online. Anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent can enroll without applying. Winter 2027 courses are posted November 9, 2026 and registration opens November 30. See our Continuing Studies guide for fees and refunds.
Other ways to learn
Chef-hosted classes
Booking platforms such as Cozymeal list classes run by private chefs in Palo Alto and nearby towns. The city is listed in advance but the exact address is usually shared only after you book. Read the cancellation terms closely, since each chef sets their own.
A note on Draeger's
Older guides send readers to the cooking school at Draeger's in Menlo Park. Draeger's still runs markets in Menlo Park, Los Altos, San Mateo and Blackhawk, but its website no longer listed cooking classes when we checked in October 2026. Call the store before you plan around one.
Learn from the market
The best free lesson in town is a Saturday or Sunday at the farmers markets. Growers will tell you how to cook what they sell. Specialty grocers are covered in our groceries and specialty food guide.
Tips for a good class
- Read the menu for allergens. Most classes cook one set menu. Tell the provider about allergies when you book, not at the door.
- Dress for a kitchen. Closed-toe shoes and tied-back hair. Some places lend aprons.
- Eat lightly beforehand. Evening classes usually end with a full meal.
- Book early in November and December. Holiday baking and chocolate sessions sell out first.
- Ask about leftovers. Bring a container if the class allows take-home portions.
- Pick one skill. A single night on pasta or tempering chocolate sticks better than a broad survey. Cook the dish again at home within a week while the steps are fresh.
- Go with a friend. Station classes pair people up. Booking together means you share a board with someone you know.
