Palo Alto is a great town for a concert or a classic film, but it has never had a comedy club. For stand-up, locals head a few exits south. A club in Sunnyvale has booked comics since 1984. The San Jose Improv brings national headliners almost every weekend. For people who want to try five minutes on stage, a coffeehouse on Castro Street in Mountain View runs one of the busiest open mics on the Peninsula every Monday night.

This guide covers recurring comedy and open mics we confirmed on official pages in October 2026, plus the pop-up shows that appear in Redwood City and Mountain View. Lineups change weekly, so check each venue's calendar before you go. For bars and late food, see our nightlife guide.

Rooster T. Feathers, Sunnyvale

Rooster T. Feathers, which regulars call Roosters, is at 157 West El Camino Real in Sunnyvale. The building has a long local history. The club says it was Sunnyvale's original bus stop, then Andy Capp's Tavern, where Atari tested its first arcade Pong machine. Later it was a bar called The Country Store. After five years of selling out comedy nights there, the owners reopened it as a full-time comedy club on January 8, 1984. Our Sunnyvale guide covers the rest of the town.

How it works

  • Age: every show is strictly 21 and over with valid ID.
  • Minimum: two items per person. Food and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks count.
  • Tickets: buy only from the club's own website or its Eventbrite account. The club says it refuses tickets bought on resale sites. Door tickets cost more and can sell out.
  • Seating: no reservations. Seating is first come, first served and groups are seated together only if they enter together. The club suggests large groups arrive 45 minutes to an hour early.
  • Refunds: all sales are final.
  • Behavior: loud talkers and hecklers are removed without a refund. Anyone caught recording the show on a phone is ejected.

As an example of pricing, a June 2026 headliner run was listed at $29.50 plus the two-item minimum. Doors usually open 30 to 60 minutes before the show.

Weekly specials

Thursday is College Night: bring a current college ID for free entry, subject to availability and not for special events. Sunday is appreciation night for military, veterans and first responders, who get in free with ID under the same terms. The two-item minimum still applies to both.

Classes for new comics

The club periodically runs 90-minute sessions taught by its owner and booker, Heather Barbieri: an introduction to stand-up, how to be a good emcee, how to get booked and how to deal with hecklers. Some are listed at $40. Dates appear on the club calendar. Its site also lists a new talent showcase and a comedy competition for newer performers.

San Jose Improv

The San Jose Improv at 62 South Second Street is part of the national Improv chain and books touring comics. Its November 2026 calendar showed shows almost every weekend, from two-night runs to a five-night stand from November 18 to 22. Check each listing for age limits and minimums. From Palo Alto, Caltrain to San Jose Diridon and a short ride or walk downtown makes a car-free night possible. See our San Jose guide for dinner nearby.

Red Rock Coffee open mic, Mountain View

Red Rock Coffee at 201 Castro Street, at the corner of Villa Street, runs the closest weekly open mic to Palo Alto. It calls it the Bay Area's best open mic and it is certainly one of the busiest. Here is how Mondays work, according to the cafe:

  1. At 4:30 p.m. the second floor closes for setup.
  2. At 5:45 p.m. it reopens and the sign-up lottery opens. Write your name on a slip and drop it in the jar.
  3. At 6 p.m. the first performer goes on.
  4. At 8 p.m. the lottery closes and drink service ends downstairs.
  5. At about 9:30 p.m. the open mic ends.

Every performer gets five minutes. Musicians, comedians, poets, storytellers and the occasional illusionist all share the stage. The cafe asks performers to keep it PG-13 and to tread lightly on politics. It provides an 88-key keyboard, a small drum kit, three vocal mics and direct lines for instruments. There is no age limit for performers. Slots are not guaranteed and you cannot sign up by phone. Red Rock lists no open mic on December 28, 2026. Details are on the Red Rock open mic page. The Mountain View Caltrain station is a two-minute walk. Our Castro Street guide covers dinner beforehand.

Pop-up comedy nights

Between the clubs, independent producers run occasional shows in bars, hotel lounges and plazas. These come and go, so treat the examples below as a sign of what to look for, not a schedule.

  • Redwood City. A producer called Peninsula Comedy staged an outdoor stand-up night at 201 Marshall Street in August 2026, with $20 tickets. The Fox Theatre on Broadway also books touring shows, so check its calendar for comedians.
  • Mountain View. The Ameswell Hotel on Moffett Boulevard hosted a comedy hour in June 2026 with a $12.51 ticket credited toward food and drink.
  • Stanford. Stanford Live occasionally includes comedy and spoken word in its season at Bing Concert Hall. See our Stanford Live guide.

Local listings in Palo Alto Online, the Almanac and the Mountain View Voice are the best way to catch these. For big-name tours at arenas and theaters, you can also browse Bay Area comedy tickets.

Tips for your first open mic

  • Time your set. Five minutes goes fast. Rehearse with a timer and cut to your best three or four minutes.
  • Watch first. Go once as an audience member to learn the room.
  • Bring a friend. A familiar face in the crowd helps. It is also good manners to stay and listen to others.
  • Know the house rules. Red Rock is a family-friendly cafe. A club open mic allows more but expects you to respect the light.

Getting home

All three main venues are near Caltrain. Rooster T. Feathers is a short ride from the Sunnyvale station and Red Rock is steps from Mountain View's. Late shows can run past the last convenient train, so check the timetable first. Our Caltrain guide has fares and our nightlife guide lists recent last-train times.

Good to know

  • Budget for the minimum. Two items per person at Roosters adds to the ticket price.
  • Buy tickets only from venue sites. Both Roosters and the Improv warn about resellers.
  • Making a night of it in the South Bay? Compare hotels near Palo Alto and take the train back.
