For one weekend every June, Stanford fills with families in sun hats, graduates in rented gowns and grandparents who flew in from three continents. Commencement is a joyful few days but it is also the most crowded weekend on the Peninsula. Hotels sell out, roads back up and the main ceremony means hours in an open stadium in the June sun.
This guide explains how the weekend is structured, what is confirmed for 2027 and how to plan the practical side. Stanford's Office of Special Events and Protocol runs the event and posts official details on the commencement website. Treat that site as the final word, since schedules and policies are set each spring.
2027 dates
Commencement Weekend 2027 runs from Thursday, June 10 to Sunday, June 13. The main ceremony takes place in Stanford Stadium on Sunday, June 13. Stanford's site gives both 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. as the start time, so check the commencement website for the confirmed time before you plan your morning. The baccalaureate is on Saturday, June 12 at 10 a.m. at Frost Amphitheater.
Many graduates also have department events on Friday and Saturday, which is why most families book three or four nights. Our graduation weekend planner pulls the dates, dinners and photo stops into one place.
Tickets for 2027
For 2027 the commencement website says graduates must register for tickets for themselves and their guests. Details are due in spring quarter. Agree on your group's size with your graduate early, so nobody is left off the list when registration opens.
How the weekend works
Here is how the 2026 weekend ran. Expect a similar shape in 2027, with exact times confirmed by Stanford closer to the date.
| Day | Event (2026 pattern) | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday evening | Senior Dinner on the Quad, seniors only, RSVP required | Main Quad |
| Friday | Additional events, some needing registration | Various |
| Saturday morning | Baccalaureate celebration, limited capacity | Frost Amphitheater |
| Saturday afternoon | President's Reception; Business, Medicine and Law diploma ceremonies | Hoover House gardens and school venues |
| Sunday morning | Commencement ceremony with the Wacky Walk | Stanford Stadium |
| Sunday afternoon | Most school and department diploma ceremonies | Across campus |
The Sunday stadium ceremony is the university-wide event, with speeches and the conferral of degrees. Graduates do not cross a stage there one by one. That moment happens at the smaller school and department ceremonies, where names are read and diplomas handed out. Ask your graduate for the time and place of their own ceremony early. It decides much of your schedule.
Baccalaureate at Frost
The baccalaureate is a multifaith celebration for graduates and their families, held at Frost Amphitheater. Frost is a grassy, tiered bowl in the arts district that hosted Stanford's commencement ceremonies from 1938 to 1984. In 2027 the baccalaureate is on Saturday, June 12 at 10 a.m. In 2026 it ran from 10 to 11:15 a.m. and Stanford noted limited capacity. Graduates wear academic dress for it.
Arrive early if you want seats together. Bring a hat because much of the bowl sits in full sun by late morning. Both the baccalaureate and the main ceremony have been recorded and posted on the commencement website, which helps relatives who cannot travel.
The Wacky Walk
Most universities open commencement with a formal procession. Stanford's undergraduates do something else. In the Wacky Walk, graduating seniors pour into Stanford Stadium in costumes, homemade signs and props. Past years have brought dinosaurs, astronauts, inflatable animals and elaborate group themes. Stanford describes it as a fun, nontraditional procession that shows off graduates' creativity.
The walk comes at the start of the ceremony, so be in your seat on time. If you want to spot your graduate, agree on a landmark costume or sign in advance. Thousands of people in gowns look alike from the upper rows.

Hotel booking timing
Commencement is the hardest weekend of the year to find a room near Stanford. Every hotel near campus fills and prices rise across the Peninsula. With the 2027 date already published, the time to book is now.
- Book a refundable rate today. Lock in something for the full weekend, then keep looking for better options.
- Know the closest hotels. The El Camino Real cluster by Palm Drive is walkable to campus. Our guide to staying near Stanford compares them.
- Widen the map. Menlo Park, Mountain View and Redwood City all sit on Caltrain. See staying in Menlo Park or Mountain View.
- Consider a house. Large families can split a rental with a kitchen. Our long stays guide covers furnished options.
- Check other big events. In 2026 a World Cup match in Santa Clara fell on commencement weekend and Stanford urged families to book early. Watch for similar clashes in 2027.
When you are ready, compare hotels for commencement weekend or search rental homes for graduation. The Stanford Guest House is not an option for most families, since it requires a Stanford affiliation and an educational purpose.
Traffic and parking
Expect heavy traffic on El Camino Real, Embarcadero Road, Sand Hill Road and Campus Drive on Sunday morning. Stanford publishes parking, shuttle and accessibility details on the commencement website in the weeks before the event. Read them before you leave the hotel, since lots and shuttle routes can differ from a normal day.
- Leave early. Aim to be parked well over an hour before the ceremony starts.
- Use the train. Caltrain's Palo Alto station is about a mile from the stadium on foot. Check Caltrain's weekend timetable, which runs less often than weekday service.
- Mind the shuttle schedule. The free Marguerite shuttle normally runs on weekdays only. Look for any special event shuttles Stanford announces.
- Drop off and park. If someone in your group has limited mobility, plan a drop-off near the stadium and check the accessibility section of the commencement site.
- Rideshare pickups get busy. After the ceremony, walk a few blocks away from the stadium before calling a car.
Our Stanford parking and transit guide covers ParkMobile, rates and the shuttle in detail.
Surviving the stadium
Mid-June in Palo Alto is usually dry and warm. Stanford Stadium has little shade for much of the crowd and a morning ceremony can run for hours with the walk-in. Our weather guide has typical June conditions.
What to bring
- Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
- A refillable water bottle, if the posted bag rules allow it.
- A light layer for the morning, which can start cool.
- A charged phone with your graduate's department ceremony location saved.
- A small bag. Stanford Athletics uses a clear bag policy for games, so check what applies to commencement before you pack.
Celebrating afterward
Restaurants in Palo Alto and Menlo Park fill fast on commencement weekend. Book your celebration meal as soon as you know which day works. Popular places can open reservations weeks ahead and some, such as Protégé, take bookings 30 days out. Our fine dining guide lists the best rooms in town.
Before the weekend is over, walk the Main Quad together. Each graduating class buries a time capsule under its class plaque in the arcade walkway. Our Main Quad guide explains where to find the plaques, which makes a good last photo stop.
