Fragrance shopping in Palo Alto happens in three places. Stanford Shopping Center has the department stores, the luxury houses and a cluster of beauty boutiques. Town & Country Village across El Camino Real has a Paris candle and perfume house plus a luxury beauty shop. Downtown has a Sephora a block from University Avenue. What the city lacks is an independent perfumery that stocks small niche brands. We could not confirm one in Palo Alto in 2026.

That still leaves plenty to sample. This guide lists each store, what it carries and how to get the most from a visit. We confirmed stores on their own websites, brand store pages or the centers' 2026 directories. Brand ranges change by season, so call ahead for a specific bottle.

Sephora, downtown and Stanford

Palo Alto has two Sephora stores, which makes it easy to test a long list of brands in one visit. The downtown store at 200 Hamilton Avenue sits a block south of University Avenue, across from the Cardinal Hotel. Sephora's page lists it open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. It also lists quiet hours, with lower music and fewer strong scents in the air. That suits shoppers with fragrance sensitivities. If you want to test perfume, plan your visit outside those hours.

The Stanford Shopping Center store sits on the Garden Walk near Macy's, between Louis Vuitton and Brunello Cucinelli. It keeps the center's hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Both list pickup options for online orders, which helps if you already know the bottle and size you want.

Department store beauty floors

Stanford Shopping Center is anchored by four department stores: Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. Each has a beauty department with designer fragrance counters, where brand staff can spray testers and suggest similar scents. Nordstrom's store page lists beauty experts who help with makeup, skin care, fragrance and grooming. Department stores are also the best place for holiday gift sets, which often pair a full bottle with a travel spray or body lotion at little extra cost.

Brand rosters differ from store to store and shift with the seasons. If you are hunting for one particular perfume, call the beauty department before you drive over. Our Stanford Shopping Center guide explains where each anchor sits and where to park.

Brand boutiques

Diptyque, Town & Country Village

Diptyque runs its own boutique in Building 2 of Town & Country Village at 855 El Camino Real. The Paris house began in 1961 as a shop for its founders' fabric designs on boulevard Saint-Germain. Scented candles appeared by 1963 and the first eau de toilette, L'Eau, followed in 1968. The Palo Alto shop sells perfumes, candles and home fragrance, with pickup for online orders and call and collect. The brand lists hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Aesop, Stanford Shopping Center

Aesop, the Australian brand founded in Melbourne in 1987 and owned by L'Oréal since 2023, has a store near the Center Pavilion. It sells the brand's fragrances, hand and body care and home scents. Its listing at the center says the brand keeps research in house, with its own chemists and laboratory.

Hermès and the luxury houses

Hermès sells its own perfumes in its Stanford boutique alongside leather goods and silk. It is closed on Sunday. Several other luxury houses at the center, including CHANEL and Louis Vuitton, make their own fragrances. Ask in the boutique whether perfume is stocked there, since ranges differ by store.

L'Occitane and Victoria's Secret

L'Occitane en Provence on the Garden Walk sells the French brand's fragrances along with body and home products. Victoria's Secret, which opened its very first store at Stanford Shopping Center in 1977, sells its Bombshell and Tease fine fragrances and body mists you can test in the store.

Bluemercury, Town & Country Village

Bluemercury in Building 1 at Town & Country Village is a smaller multi-brand shop with luxury skin care, makeup, hair care and fragrance. The appeal is personal service. The center describes a curated collection with help from the shop's Beauty Experts, which makes it a calmer place than a department store to talk through what you like. The chain lists hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Diptyque is a short walk away, so the two make an easy pair.

How to test a perfume

  1. Start with a paper strip. Use strips to narrow a long list down to two or three.
  2. Move to skin. Spray your favorites on your wrist or the inside of your elbow. Perfume smells different on skin.
  3. Limit yourself. After four or five scents your nose tires. Sniffing your own sleeve helps reset it.
  4. Wait. Top notes fade within minutes. Walk around for an hour and see how the scent settles before you buy.
  5. Ask for a sample. Wearing a scent for a full day tells you more than a quick spray.

Good to know

  • Bottles over 100 milliliters are not allowed in carry-on bags on flights. Buy a travel spray or check the bottle.
  • Stanford Shopping Center is closed on Thanksgiving. Holiday hours run later from late November.
  • Sephora's downtown store closes on November 26 and December 25, 2026.
  • For skin care and makeup, see our beauty and skincare guide.

Beyond Palo Alto

We did not confirm a stand-alone niche perfumery within about 12 miles of Palo Alto in 2026. Most shoppers find that the two centers here cover the big names. If you want a wider spread of department stores and brand boutiques under one roof, the nearest larger retail cluster is Santana Row and Westfield Valley Fair in San Jose, about 25 minutes south on Interstate 280. Our Santana Row and Valley Fair guide covers parking and the layout. Online fragrance shops that sell sample sets by mail are another option for niche brands you cannot find locally. Try a sample before you commit to a full bottle from any retailer you do not know.

Fragrance as a gift

Perfume is a personal gift. If you are not sure of someone's taste, a candle, a hand cream or a discovery set of small vials is safer than a full bottle. Diptyque and Aesop both suit that approach. Ask about gift wrapping when you pay. Keep the receipt in case the scent does not suit. For more ideas, our gift guide covers Stanford gear, food gifts and local finds.
