Spring break is a good time to see Palo Alto with children. The rain has mostly stopped, the hills are green and afternoons are warm enough for playgrounds and picnics. The catch is that you will not be alone. Local families stay in town for part of the week, visiting families arrive from colder places and admitted students tour Stanford with their parents. A little planning goes a long way.

This guide is for families. It explains how the local school and university breaks fall, which attractions draw the biggest crowds, what to book in advance and how to shape a relaxed week. For the season as a whole, see our guides to March and April.

When the breaks fall

Three calendars matter. They rarely line up.

Palo Alto Unified

PAUSD usually takes one full week of spring break in early April. The district's 2026 to 2027 calendar lists April 5 to 9, 2027, so local students are off from Saturday, April 3 through Sunday, April 11. School calendars can change, so confirm on the PAUSD calendar page before you plan around it. Neighboring districts and private schools set their own weeks, which often differ from PAUSD's.

Stanford

Stanford does not publish a named spring break. Instead, there is a gap between winter and spring quarters. In 2027 winter finals end on March 19 and spring classes begin on March 29, which leaves March 20 to 28 as a quiet week on campus. Easter falls on Sunday, March 28, 2027.

Your own school

If your break falls in mid to late March, you get Stanford's quiet week and fewer local families at attractions. If it falls in early April, you share the town with PAUSD families. Weekdays are always calmer than weekends.

Where the crowds go

The same few places fill up every spring break. Here is how to handle each one.

PlaceWhy it fillsHow to beat the crowd
Junior Museum and ZooSmall, popular with young kids, timed entryBook online ahead and pick a morning slot. Closed Mondays.
Stanford DishPaved loop, green hills, easy parking nearbyGo before 9 a.m. or on a weekday
Foothills Nature PreserveLake and oak woodland; visitor cap of 600 at onceArrive early on sunny days
Mitchell Park and Magical Bridge PlaygroundInclusive playground, popular all yearWeekday mornings are calmest
Filoli, WoodsideSpring bulbs at peak, timed ticketsBuy tickets as soon as your dates are set
Monterey Bay AquariumSchool breaks across CaliforniaBuy tickets ahead and arrive at opening

The Junior Museum and Zoo is the one most likely to sell out. It is small, its animals and exhibits suit kids under ten and entry is by timed ticket. At Foothills Nature Preserve, rangers stop letting people in once the cap is reached, so a late start on a warm Saturday can mean waiting at the gate.

Stanford with kids

The campus is free to explore and works well for families. The Rodin Sculpture Garden is outdoors and open all the time. The Arizona Cactus Garden is an odd, fun detour. The Cantor Arts Center and Anderson Collection are free, though both close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On weekdays, the free Marguerite shuttle saves small legs on the long walks. Our Stanford with kids guide has routes and snack stops.

If you have a teenager thinking about college, spring break is a natural time to see the campus. Stanford's spring visit programs start with spring quarter on March 29, 2027. Admit Weekend, April 28 to 30, 2027, fills the campus with admitted students and is best avoided by casual visitors.

Easy outdoor days

  • Wildflower walk. Early April is often peak bloom at Pearson-Arastradero Preserve. The meadow trails are short and gentle.
  • Last skate of the season. The Winter Lodge outdoor rink stays open until April 11, 2027. Book sessions online.
  • Bay birds. Spring migration brings shorebirds to the Baylands. The boardwalk from the nature center runs about a quarter mile over the marsh.
  • Swim. Rinconada Pool is open year-round.

Our Palo Alto with kids guide has dozens more ideas by age group.

Family day trips

  1. Monterey. The aquarium is the classic spring break trip and the busiest. Buy tickets ahead and consider an overnight. See our Monterey and Carmel guide.
  2. Santa Cruz. Outside summer the Boardwalk's rides run mostly on weekends and holidays, so check its calendar before you drive. Our Santa Cruz guide covers the beaches too.
  3. San Francisco by train. Caltrain makes the city easy with kids. Our San Francisco guide covers the easiest routes from the station.

A sample family week

This plan suits kids from about four to twelve. Shuffle the days to match the forecast.

  • Day 1: settle in with a morning at Mitchell Park and Magical Bridge Playground, then an early dinner downtown.
  • Day 2: a timed morning slot at the Junior Museum and Zoo, a picnic at Rinconada Park next door and an afternoon swim.
  • Day 3: Stanford. Run around the Main Quad, see the Rodin bronzes, then walk the Dish before dinner.
  • Day 4: a day trip to Monterey or Santa Cruz. Leave early and plan to be back after the evening commute.
  • Day 5: wildflowers at Pearson-Arastradero in the morning and an afternoon skate at the Winter Lodge.
  • Day 6: the Saturday farmers market downtown, then the Baylands boardwalk and nature center.
  • Day 7: a slow Sunday with the California Avenue market and a rest before the trip home.

Build in rest. Young children tire quickly on the long walks across campus. A quiet afternoon at the hotel keeps the week fun.

Camps and care

If you live here or are staying for a while, day camps can fill part of the week. City, private and sports programs run camps during the PAUSD break. Palo Alto Swim and Sport, for example, runs a spring break swim camp at Rinconada Pool. Listings usually appear in winter and spots fill early. Our school break camps guide explains how registration works.

If it rains

Early April can still bring a shower or two. Keep a backup plan: a classic film at the Stanford Theatre, the free Stanford museums, the libraries or a long lunch. Our rainy day guide lists more indoor options.

Where to stay and eat

Families often do better with a suite or a rental that has a kitchen and laundry. Palo Alto's business hotels can be pricey on weekdays, so compare nearby towns on the Caltrain line too. Book early for the PAUSD week and for any weekend overlapping Easter or Admit Weekend. You can compare family hotels near Palo Alto and choose a refundable rate. For meals, our kid-friendly restaurants guide lists places with space, patios and simple menus.

Good to know

  • Check the PAUSD calendar for the exact break week before you book.
  • The Junior Museum and Zoo is closed on Mondays and uses timed tickets.
  • Marguerite main lines run on weekdays only.
