Korean barbecue usually means a grill set into the middle of the table, plates of raw marinated meat and a spread of small side dishes. Palo Alto does not have a restaurant like that. We checked again in late October 2026 and could not confirm a tabletop grill house inside the city. What the city does have is Korean barbecue cooked in the kitchen: galbi and bulgogi plates at a family-run tofu house on El Camino Real and a pound of Korean-style short ribs on a Vietnamese menu downtown. For grilling your own, the nearest confirmed option is on Castro Street in Mountain View. Santa Clara's Korean restaurant strip on El Camino Real is a little farther.
Our Korean food guide covers the wider cuisine. This page is only about Korean barbecue: the cuts, how a grill meal works, where to go and what it costs. Every place named was confirmed in late October or early November 2026 through its own website, its own ordering page, a 2026 official tourism listing or a verified page in our business directory. Places outside Palo Alto are within about 12 miles.

The cuts and words to know
- Galbi or kalbi. Beef short rib, marinated in soy sauce, sugar, garlic, sesame oil and often Asian pear. The star of most Korean barbecue meals.
- LA galbi. Short rib cut thin across the bones, so each strip has three small bone pieces. It cooks fast on a hot grill.
- Bulgogi. Thin slices of marinated beef. Pork and chicken versions use a spicy gochujang marinade.
- Samgyeopsal. Thick slices of pork belly, grilled plain and dipped in sesame oil with salt and pepper.
- Chadolbaegi. Paper-thin brisket that cooks in seconds.
- Banchan. The small shared side dishes, such as kimchi, bean sprouts and pickled radish.
- Ssam. A lettuce or perilla leaf wrap. Put meat, a dab of ssamjang paste, garlic and rice in a leaf and eat it in one bite.
Korean barbecue in Palo Alto
So Gong Dong Tofu House, 4127 El Camino Real
So Gong Dong is a family-run Korean restaurant in south Palo Alto that specializes in soft tofu soup. Its menu has a BBQ section with BBQ Beef Short Rib, Bulgogi Beef, Bulgogi Chicken and Bulgogi Pork, all cooked in the kitchen and served with rice and banchan. A short rib plate with a bubbling pot of soondubu on the side is a full Korean barbecue meal without the tabletop grill. It serves lunch and dinner daily with a break in the afternoon and takes online orders for pickup. The small parking lot fills at dinner, so arrive early.
Pho Ha Noi, 185 University Avenue
Pho Ha Noi is a Vietnamese pho shop, but its house specialties include 1 LB Korean BBQ Short Ribs with white rice, listed at $24.50 or $29.50 depending on the portion. Korean-style short ribs are popular in Vietnamese restaurants across the Bay Area. It is a good choice when one person at the table wants galbi and everyone else wants pho. The kitchen closes between lunch and dinner. Our pho guide covers the soups.
Tabletop grilling nearby
Ginza, 475 Castro Street, Mountain View
Ginza is the nearest confirmed tabletop grill to Palo Alto, about 6 miles south. Its ordering page lists it as Korean barbecue and lists dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. every day. The At Your Table menu is sold in 6-ounce portions. Boneless LA Galbi Short Rib was listed at $36.89, Garlic Pork Belly and Spicy Pork Belly at $26.89 and Garlic Chicken Thigh at $18.89. Wagyu cuts run from Australian beef belly to Japanese A5 short rib at more than $50. Garlic butter shrimp, scallops, a Yakiniku Vegetable Platter and Corn Cheese round out the grill list. Two soups, a Kimchi Beef Soup and a Clam Miso Soup, are sized for three or four people. Ginza also serves Japanese dishes. Its menu borrows the Japanese word yakiniku for the grill, so expect a Korean and Japanese blend.
Castro Street is a short walk from the Mountain View Caltrain station, which saves a drive after a few drinks. Our Castro Street guide covers parking.
Jang Su Jang, Santa Clara
Jang Su Jang at 3561 El Camino Real, #10, sits on Santa Clara's Korean restaurant strip, about 11 miles from downtown Palo Alto. Discover Santa Clara's 2026 food trail calls it an iconic Santa Clara staple recognized by the Michelin Guide. It recommends ordering family style: bibimbap, then LA galbi short ribs, bulgogi and a stew such as soondubu or yukgaejang, a spicy beef soup. It suits groups and celebrations, so book ahead on weekends. Our Santa Clara food guide covers more of the strip.
Farther out, the same food trail lists Baekjeong at Westfield Valley Fair, a high-energy grill house about 14 miles away and outside the range of this guide. Older listings also show a Gen Korean BBQ in Mountain View, but the chain's 2026 location list shows no Mountain View restaurant. Its nearest branches are in San Jose.

How a tabletop meal works
- Order by the portion. Plan on two or three meat portions for every two people. Start with one beef, one pork and one marinated cut.
- Grill plain meats first. Unmarinated cuts like brisket and pork belly go on before sweet marinated ones, which burn and stick.
- Let staff help. Servers at many grill houses turn the meat and cut it with scissors. Ask if you are unsure.
- Build wraps. Lettuce, meat, ssamjang, sliced garlic and kimchi make one bite.
- Finish with soup or noodles. A stew or cold noodles cut the richness.
- Dress casually. Smoke clings to hair and clothing.
Dietary notes
- Gluten. Soy sauce and gochujang marinades usually contain wheat. Plain pork belly and unmarinated beef are safer. Ask.
- Vegetarian. Ginza lists a Yakiniku Vegetable Platter. Banchan can contain fish sauce or salted shrimp.
- Pork. Pork belly is a menu staple. Beef and chicken cuts are always available.
- Halal. None of these restaurants states halal certification.
- Allergies. Sesame oil and seeds are in most marinades and dips.
Timing and reservations
Korean grill houses are dinner places and busiest from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Ginza serves dinner only. So Gong Dong is the better lunch choice. For groups of six or more, call ahead or arrive at opening. A grill meal takes longer than a regular dinner, so allow 90 minutes. If you want a full outing, pair Santa Clara's Korean strip with an afternoon at the Intel Museum, which is free on weekdays.
