Palo Alto's Fourth of July is a daytime holiday. There is no parade down University Avenue and no fireworks over the Baylands. Instead, the city puts on a free chili cook-off and summer festival at Mitchell Park, families picnic and barbecue in their backyards and those who want fireworks drive or ride Caltrain to a neighboring city. It is a relaxed, kid-friendly day that ends early for most people in town.

This guide covers the city's festival, where nearby cities have held fireworks shows and the rules that apply in Palo Alto. July 4, 2027 falls on a Sunday. The 2027 programs were not out in October 2026, so we describe the 2026 festival and recent shows nearby and tell you where to check. For the rest of the month, see our July guide and our summer events guide.

The Chili Cook-off at Mitchell Park

The center of the day is the city's 4th of July Chili Cook Off and Summer Festival at Mitchell Park, 600 East Meadow Drive. It has been a Palo Alto tradition for about four decades. A 2014 report called it the 33rd annual cook-off and the city billed the 2024 event as its 40th.

In 2026, the year of the nation's 250th birthday, the festival ran on Saturday, July 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entry and chili tasting were free. Teams competed for Best Overall Chili, Best Vegetarian Chili, Best Booth, Best Spirit and a People's Choice award. Bay Area food trucks sold lunch, adults could buy beer and margaritas and kids had games, activities and inflatables. A sensory-friendly tent offered a calmer space with sensory toys, simple crafts and headphones. Live music came from the Good Time Collective.

Chili tasting is limited. In 2024 the city's special events coordinator advised arriving around 10:30 or 10:45 a.m. to line up for one of about 3,000 tasting wristbands. Our full Chili Cook-off guide covers its history, how judging works and how teams enter.

Getting there

Parking around Mitchell Park is very limited on the Fourth. The city asks people to walk or bike and welcomes picnic blankets. The city's network of bike boulevards makes it an easy ride from most of town. Our bike boulevards guide shows the routes. If you must drive, come early and expect to park several blocks away in the surrounding neighborhood.

Fireworks are illegal in Palo Alto

This is the most important thing to know about the Fourth in Palo Alto. According to the city, all fireworks are illegal in Palo Alto. That includes the "safe and sane" fireworks sold legally in some other California cities. It also includes sparklers, firecrackers, Roman candles and bottle rockets. The same ban applies across most of Santa Clara County.

The city explains its reasons on its fireworks page. Sparklers burn at around 2,000 degrees and account for more than a quarter of fireworks-related emergency room visits. The city also cites national fire data estimating that fireworks started about 19,500 fires in 2018. Palo Alto's foothills and open space preserves are covered in dry grass by July. Stanford bans fireworks on its foothills trails outright.

What to do instead

  • Report illegal fireworks to the 24-hour police non-emergency dispatch line at (650) 329-2413. The city asks people to call even late at night, because reports help police see where fireworks are being set off. Call 911 only for a fire or injury.
  • Hand in fireworks of any kind at any Palo Alto fire station, including Fire Station 1 at 301 Alma Street.
  • Try safe swaps. The city suggests glow sticks instead of sparklers, noisemakers, a backyard movie night or a televised fireworks show.

Enforcement is hard, since officers need to see the violation or have a witness willing to sign a citizen's arrest. That is why fireworks still pop in some neighborhoods after dark. Our public safety guide explains how to reach police and fire.

Pets and the Fourth

The Fourth is the hardest night of the year for many dogs. The city's advice is simple:

  1. Bring pets indoors before dusk and close gates, doors and windows.
  2. Turn up the TV or play music to cover the bangs.
  3. Never let dogs off leash outside and make sure they wear a collar with an ID tag.
  4. Update your pet's microchip registration before the holiday.
  5. Consider a crate or a snug wrap for anxious dogs.

Shelters often take in more lost pets in the days after the Fourth. Our pets guide covers licensing, microchips and the local animal shelter.

Where to see fireworks nearby

Professional shows run by cities and venues are the legal way to see fireworks. The City of Palo Alto links each year to a county list of professional displays in Santa Clara County. Local press roundups also list Peninsula events in late June. These are the shows the Mountain View Voice listed for July 4, 2024. Treat them as the usual pattern and confirm each one for the current year.

CityWhat ran in 2024
Redwood CityParade at 10 a.m., festival at Courthouse Square, fireworks at the Port of Redwood City at 9:30 p.m.
Foster CityAll-day celebration at Leo Ryan Park with fireworks around 9:30 p.m.

Redwood City is the easiest show to reach without a car. Its Caltrain station is a few minutes' walk from Courthouse Square and the parade route. See our Redwood City station guide and plan for a late, crowded train home after the fireworks at the port. For the Shoreline concert, see our Shoreline Amphitheatre guide or browse Bay Area concert tickets.

More July 4 events nearby

Several towns around Palo Alto hold small-town parades and picnics. In 2024 Los Altos Hills ran a morning parade from Town Hall on Fremont Road. Menlo Park held a people's parade, games and live music at Burgess Park. Cupertino had a pancake breakfast, parade and concert at Memorial Park. Woodside's Junior Rodeo filled the July 3 and 4 holiday with events at the Mounted Patrol grounds. These suit families who want a parade in the morning and the chili cook-off at lunch.

Good to know

  • July days are warm and dry. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat to Mitchell Park.
  • Evenings cool off fast, so pack a layer for fireworks shows.
  • Do not drive into the hills to watch fireworks from the roadside. Fire danger is high and roads are narrow.
  • Our emergency preparedness guide covers wildfire alerts and evacuation zones.

Planning the day

A classic Palo Alto Fourth starts with a bike ride to Mitchell Park for chili at 11 a.m., moves to a backyard barbecue in the afternoon and ends with a train ride to Redwood City or a ticketed concert at Shoreline for the fireworks. If you are visiting for the holiday weekend, hotels are usually easier to book than in June, when Stanford commencement fills rooms. You can compare hotels for the Fourth of July weekend.
